Initial Thoughts pats Game

We have now seen a few different OC AND QB’s, yet the offense still has the same problems. That is not a player or OC problem, it’s a HC philosophy problem. Once they had a lead, what little O they had going was pulled back.

What aggravates me is that we don’t know what the offense is capable of because they never play to win. Everyone preaches run to set up the pass. You can just as easily pass to set up the run.

Another year with lots of changes on offense with yet again the same anemic offensive game plans and play calls during the games. I'm happy they won today, but NE turned it over 5 times (plus 5 sacks) and the game was still in question with two minutes to go in the game.

Year after year with an offense that can't help keep the defense off the field regardless of whose playing and whose coaching on the offensive side. There is one constant from year to year with this team, and he needs to be willing to make some changes and let others have the freedom to unleash the offense if he wants his defense to be healthy and playing well at the end of the season.

Hard to watch but they did not give up and somehow had a nice drive Warren a couple key runs finally threw down field to Austin for the lead. Defense could not get off the field how many third downs and fourth downs could not sop...BUT finally stopped the fourth down play when needed. Hard to get the defense. Today to many plays looked as if they did not know who was doing what. Offense why can the receivers get open. Maybe one p[*** where the coverage was not strong. The turnovers were key but if you did not know the score after first quarter you would thought it was 35-0 pats. Something is missing, besides not being the team that was hyped up to be. we are 2-1 cant complain .

Tomlin Ball is just really hard to watch. You almost feel dirty after three hours knowing how the movie ends and even thinking about getting excited about Fools Gold.

They're just a few plays between being 0-3 or potentially 3-0. When you're +4 in turnover differential in a game, you better win.

There is no aspect of the offense or defense, other than probably the pass rush, that can be considered a strength right now.

Rodgers flashes some great things with his receivers, particularly in the red zone, but there is no consistency.

The offense needs to throw down field more to open things up for the running game and shorter throws, but they don't seem to trust the OL enough to do it. Same ****, different year.

How many long throws have they even attempted to Metcalf so far?

Defensively, the pass coverage is still atrocious over the middle of the field. I'd like to think things will get a lot better there when Elliot returns, but I doubt it will.

Run defense was better today, but I still wouldn't say it is as good as needs to be. Hopefully, things continue to improve as Harmon and Black settle in more up front.

Currently, this looks like the same team we've seen for years now, being too dependent on the defense forcing turnovers and/or sacking the opposing QB all day to win games.

Probably about the least optimistic I can remember being about a 2-1 start for the Steelers.

They should have lost this game! There are entirely too many holes in this team to be successful.
They have not played a good team yet but will next week against the Vikings and they won’t make the same mistakes as the young Patriots.
I think most of us here know how this is going to end this year. Same **** new year.

Steelers are poorly coached. Everything flows from that fact.

Blame players for a mistake, but when those same mistakes happen over and over and over, that's on coaching.

How many easy completions over the middle do we have to see before they make some adjustment?

The worst part of this win is that because they did win, Tomlin takes that as vilidation that everything worked. No need to change anything because they got the win.

The offense is frustrating but at least I feel like they're getting the most out of what they have, at least for now. The OL is getting better but still not up to part, especially with pass protection.

You can nit pick individual play calls from Arthur Smith but overall, he's doing a great job so far. It's tough to call plays when your OL can't pass protect for more than 2 seconds, if that.

The defense is a mess. Yes, they're missing Porter and Elliott, but the front 7 is mostly in tact. Highsmith is out, but Herbig plays a lot and was not an issue today.

The scheme is really simple, so why so much confusion? Even if you're new to the steelers, I presume you've played zone defense before.

I can't wait to see how they play next week with jetlag in Ireland after Tomlin has them travel like it's a normal road game.

My thoughts are this team isn’t very good. I think the issues are about 98% schematic and that the talent on the team allows them to eke out these victories. Either way a win is a win, on to the next.
Spot on! All in all, I believe that the talent Tomlin has had over some years, masked his deficiencies and pulled in a lot of 9-7 or 8-8 records.

I didn't watch the game, but I've seen this game plenty of times already.

I'm going to guess they win in Ireland next week.

Oh you know he's doubling down forever now on making them drive the length of the field and make a mistake...

Initial thoughts...play and win thru the injuries at key positions and build cohesion with that young OL. Steelers can stack wins IMO, if this defense continues to improve.

I still think we need a bonafide WR2 that can separate and take some coverage away from DK; but Arthur Smith showed a lot of moxie today by using plays that NO ONE even saw coming - i.e. wildcat.

On to Ireland!!!

It's still September. We're 2-1. We're going to Ireland. All's well.

My initial thoughts are that we aren't very good and that the Patriots snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I certainly hope we can get better. I don't see how we get much worse. At least we didn't give up 30 points.

Overall as a team, we did play better.

We had good play followed by bad play, but nothing very consistent. 5 turnovers and 5 sacks is a good day for defense, but we still were on the field of play to long. Couldn’t shut down the 3rd and long plays.

Offense was great to start, then disappeared until late 4th quarter.

there is Hope

Our DL and OLBs finally showed up for a game. But, I spent a lot of time today cursing about the usual cushions and soft play of the secondary.

So………………. You’ve been doiN time…………

In Ohio, they showed the Bengals and Browns. If the Vikings and Steelers play like they did today, they will incinerate the Steelers in Ireland.

I think they lose quite a bit of run defense on the edge when Herbig plays instead of Highsmith, though Herbig is the more explosive pass rusher.

None of the Steelers top five DBs today were with the team last year, so communication issues may not be totally inexcusable only three weeks in, but it is a lot more than that.

Teams just know where the holes in the Steelers coverages are, and the ILB and S play has been pretty bad.

The middle of the pass defense has not been great for years now, but it was not this bad when Minkah was at S.

Once Porter returns, the Steelers need to consider playing Ramsey more inside to try and take some of these open throws away.

Lebeau was known to confuse young QBs. Maye was the opposite of confused. He knew everything that was coming.

It's also funny when the steelers face 3rd and long on offense, Rodgers drops back and ends up having to check it down because the defense drops players and there's nowhere else to go. The steelers defense on 3rd and long tries to get tricky and allows easy throws over the middle.

I good 3rd down defense influences the QB. It shows pressure, then predicts where the hot read would be, then takes away that hot read so the QB either gets sacked holding the ball or has to force a tough throw. These steelers blitz and then let the hot read be wide open.

Hard to watch but they did not give up and somehow had a nice drive Warren a couple key runs finally threw down field to Austin for the lead.
At that hat point they were tied so had to play to win. If they would’ve been ahead even by one point they would’ve turtled up
Defense could not get off the field how many third downs and fourth downs could not sop...BUT finally stopped the fourth down play when needed. Hard to get the defense.
True they did get the stops, but after giving up sustained drives each time. With better opponent ball control the D gives up 35+ points again.
Today to many plays looked as if they did not know who was doing what.
Today? I think you mean all year.

This is what a team always looks like when they play scared, trying not to lose. I can’t remember the last time they came out and played to win.

There were positives. The biggest one was our coaching staff going for the end zone rather than playing for a FG. I thought they were going to run it for sure. We needed the 7.
Positives....

1. We won
2. Went for a TD and settle or a FG
3. Running game(Warren almost hit 50 yards and at had over a 2 ypc)
4. Passing game(AAron finished the game upright)
5. Run D(held opponents to under 120 yards and under a 5 yard avg.)
6. Pass D(no one got hurt.... I think)
7. Boz made all of his point afters(had all but the day off oddly)
