Steelers select CB Senquez Golson

Draft Analysis:

And this team plays a lot of zone coverage. I wouldn't lock him up on a big tall outside receiver, but in a league with so many multiple receiver sets, there is always a 5'10 guy out there inside to cover. Bottom line is that the defense this team has always played is predicated by linebacker pressure, that gets better the secondary will also get better. Plus Grant was expected to go on many boards in rounds before they got him. Its like the Jarvis pick. Getting Bell in the next round takes a lot of stink off of that pick.

There's a new sheriff in town. Butler is in charge now.

We've had this mold of big physical corners for years and frankly, with the decay of the linebacking corps and the aging of the secondary it's just not working out like it used to. The offensive landscape of the NFL is changing. Mayhaps, Coach Butler is changing too.

Think on it and be afraid.

Looking back on the 2nd round as a whole, you see a lot of guys taken that were widely "mocked" as 3rd and 4th rounders (Funchess, Kikaha, Tartt, Golden, Marpet, Clark etc.). Were they all reaches, players that would have been available in round 3 if not for the one team that took them being way off base on the guys value? Or were the mock drafts poor reflections of how teams really stacked their boards? Guys who put together mock drafts act in a herd just like investors. It's dangerous to put too much stock into the "consensus view."

I don't see that at all. Gay is 5-10, Blake is 5-9, and McCain is 5-9. Ike is 6'1 and Allen is 6'1. Ike is retired and has been on the team for a decade. Allen was just resigned for big money. I don't see much of a change at all. They drafted a 6' CB last year in Shaquille Richardson. The year before they drafted another 6' guy in Hawthorne. When exactly did they change? They drafted small guys like Gay years ago while drafting bigger guy like Allen et el recently. Just drafting 1 short CB this year doesn't signal a change in approach or philosophy.
 
I believe this thread will be the "Debate the pick to death" thread....not as many pages at the "Dri Archer" or "Jarvis Jones" threads in the past, but its gonna get some burn before training camp starts. ....

Or perhaps the choice was made (somewhere upstairs) that we should target playmakers, regardless of size, on defense...

Thanks for reopening the wound...but, as you can see - Golson is a playmaker...he may not intercept every ball coming his way; but, the kid isn't afraid to mix it up and make a tackle on larger receivers...

Who knows if they ever drafted players any other way? They have drafted shorter players like Gay in the past and bigger guys like Allen as well. So it appears they don't have a height philosophy at all. I'm not sure any team has a "If he isn't 6' don't draft him at CB" philosophy. I'm sure you can find all sizes of CBs on every team. I know I can on the Steelers.

Just curious what makes you guys believe that Cortez Allen will automatically be starting in September. Because he's 6-1? Maybe you hadn't noticed -- Allen couldn't cover my grandmother last year. And I think it's a bit premature to assume that the Steelers drafted a cornerback in the second round to summarily fill a spot on the depth chart below a guy who was on the bench at the end of last season.
 
The difference between Cortez and Golson is when the ball is in the air Cortez will have his back to the ball
and Golson will be turned to make a play on the ball.
 
Allen had leg and knee issues last year. When healthy I think he will be better.
 
We're counting on Allen to bounce back because 1) he couldn't possibly play any worse than he did last year and 2) we're screwed if he doesn't.
 
If anything I think our draft indicates a lot of faith still in Jarvis Jones and Cortez Allen to be effective starters for this team in 2015.

It would be great if they both took steps forward and became plus starters and contributors (i.e. we don't end the season considering each of their positions a must-upgrade type situation).
 
Allen has good ball skills and height. I think he could be a good free safety. As a corner Cortez Allen is not quick enough to stick with the smaller players and lacks the deep speed to stick with the faster players. TE's burned him for six.

The Steelers gave Allen a large contract. With his injury history, and his level of play last season the new deal is not looking good.
