Final 53 Man Roster Prediction

This one seems a bit easy this year...Here is my 53 man roster prediction.

Quarterback (3): Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard

Hoping that the Steelers receive calls and gain a draft pick for Thompson

I’m not sure order of events to get Howard on the short term IR and Thompson on 53. Let’s get creative.

Running Back (3): Jaylen Warren, Kaleb Johnson, Kenneth Gainwell

Nichols should make the practice squad

Wide Receiver (6): DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin, Curtis Samuel, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek

If Omar is who we all think he is, there is a WR out there that will be brought in and should push Skowronek out.

Tight End (4): Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith, Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward

Baby Cam squeaks in due to injury

If a WR is brought in, Jr Heyward should be cut.

Offensive Line (8): Broderick Jones, Isaac Seumalo, Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick, Troy Fautanu, Calvin Anderson, Spencer Anderson, Andrus Peat

Listing Anderson and Peat was tough to do here...the OL really lacks depth. If any Starter is injured, look for Aaron Rogers to be buried into the Heinz Field turf. (NO, I will not call it by the other name)

Gotta find room for McCoullers, center position is pretty important.

Cut Jr. Heyward

Defensive Line (7): Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, Isaiahh Loudermilk, Daniel Ekuale, Logan Lee

Logan Lee makes the roster, and I agree with Berm's assessment in the game day thread of needing an IV of Peanut butter. LMAO.

Glad you finally realize what MANY here have known for quite some time……. berm is a comedian

Also, Hammon’s injury is a wild card. He has 2-weeks for the coaching staff to figure it out.

Edge (4): T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, Jack Sawyer

Does it get any easier than picking these four?

Almost as easy as calling a Blitz or two to help scheme TJ a little more freedom…….

The Scottish rebellion-ist… Wallace’s last word…………. FREEDOM……….. could be used as an example

Linebacker (5): Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson, Cole Holcomb, Malik Harrison, Mark Robinson

I really like this group and the depth is there. Look for Holcomb to be the thumper on short yardage situations.

The hardest decision of this group is who starts…… Wilson or Holcomb ? Strong case either way……

Cornerback (6): Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr, Darius Slay, Brandin Echols, Beanie Bishop, James Pierre

James Pierre will not go away, and Trice is making it easy for him. Dude can't stay healthy and it's disappointing to say the least.

Safety (4): DeShon Elliott, Juan Thornhill, Chuck Clark, Miles Killebrew

Elliott and Thornhill start let's hope they stay healthy.

Killebrew is like a fiery hot “ghost-pepper”, the heat just doesn’t go away. He has a way of sticking around and STs is his friend.!

Special Teams (3): Chris Boswell, Cam Johnston, Christian Kuntz

I take back my statement on the Edge group, this was even easier.

Nothing like a strong Kuntz…………………….

Great post Badcat, Appreciate yaz

I just keep coming back to if Skylar Thompson is required to save the season they are sunk anyhow. Keep Will Howard for possible upside. Trade Thompson if you can. If he isn't picked up active sign him to the PS. As far as Harmon goes they are counting on him in the here and now. So while they will let him heal........they aren't giving him a redshirt at all. He is vital.

Sure you keep Howard regardless. But you need three healthy QBs for game 1. So that should dictate if he is short term IR or on the roster without injury designation…

If he is good to go now or within a week of the regular season put him active now. He only goes IR if he can't practice or potentially dress for two weeks. The third QB is only getting a hat because of injury anyhow.

I’m not sure you do. If it’s just a week or 2, then it’s just like a normal time in the season when a player goes down.

If Howard is about to come back, they probably just make Howard an inactive and elevate someone from the practice squad as the emergency QB until he comes back.

I think if it’s a 1-2 week thing he makes it.
If it’s 3-4 weeks, or more, he’ll go to IR.

Then you have to designate Skyler to be protected on the PS. Not sure they want to bring in another QB at this point- if they don’t have to.

Reports are saying Harmon will avoid it possibly only missing two games. But why rush him back? I would put him in there giving him that two game recovery extension.
I'd definitely use one of the two IRTR spots on Harmon. Let him heal up right, and bring him back after the bye week fresh and ready to contribute for the rest of the season.

Again, I’m not sure you even have to do that either.
Barring injury, If a team was going to poach them they probably would’ve snatched him up off of waivers.

But we’re talking our our QB3 here, if we’re cutting him, I don’t think the team is really that worried about losing him.

I 100% could see Howard going to IR to fit him in, I just don’t think it’s worth it for a week or 2. But, I don’t think they put a 4th on practice squad.
If he doesn’t get scooped up, it’s probably a “hey stay by the phone,” type of release.

This is exactly why I'm not excited for the season. Tomlin is the ultimate buzzkill.
We'll see. Last season he let Russ be Russ and the offense clicked for a while, then he reverted back to Tomlinball, he can't seem to help himself.

Hope the offense is open and innovative this year, as that's all we can do is hope.

What time are the final cuts due?

We have around $20 million in cap space. Anyone we add off someone’s cut list at this stage will be a marginal player at best and have a hard time “getting on the moving train” as Tomlin loves to say.

Garbage job by Khan leaving that much unused cap space two years in a row, who cares if it keeps rolling over: this team needs an impact WR2 and depth at oline and safety desperately. An injury to Metcalf or Oline or Safety will badly cripple the team. Khan has been Tomlinized and should get taken out with the rest of the trash when Tomlin leaves. The entire front office and coaching staff needs a reset

I find myself, just like every year getting excited and optimistic for the season.
Rodgers is the best QB since Ben. We always had a chance with Ben.

You dont use IR spots lightly... unless something changed, you can only bring 8 players back during the season off of it.. that include the two preseason IR spots. You dont want yo be n a late season roster crunch because you used them frivolously on short term injuries

100%

He’s beaten optimism out of me and game day alcoholism into me…it’s the sad truth

I’ll believe he’s capable of change for the BETTER when he proves it. At this stage he gets more conservative year after year, more predictable year after year.

That’s why the fake punt vs the Commanders last year had me excited. Sure it was dumb AF, but it was the first time he wasn’t predictable in years and I felt like maybe there was a chance for one quick moment that it may be a turning point towards aggression and actually playing to win games rather than playing to kill clock and hope we end up on top. It took balls, something he rarely/if ever displays anymore.

I’ll be a firm believer in 9-8 until he PROVES he can do better. **** Tomlin

This is what I would do as opposed to a prediction.

Quarterback (3) - I feel ok at QB. Rodgers should be the Steelers best QB since Ben. However, until we see him play it's hard to say. Rudolph is an okay backup and I think Howard can eventually be a good long-term backup.
Aaron Rodgers
Mason Rudolph
Will Howard
Thompson will probably make the initial roster with Howard going on the IR.

Running Back (4) - This is an upgraded backfield with more burst than they've had the past few seasons. By the middle of the season, this should be one of the better positional groups.
Jaylen Warren
Kenneth Gainwell
Kaleb Johnson
Lew Nichols
I could see Sermon making the roster as well, I just think Nichols offers more versatility with his skillset. However, Sermon's ability on special teams may earn him the final spot.

Tight End (4) - This quietly may be one of the best groups of tight ends in the league. Two tier-2 TEs and the premiere blocking TE in the NFL who the Steelers will hopefully use in the passing game as well.
Jonnu Smith
Pat Freiermuth
Darnell Washington
Connor Heyward
I wanted to cut Heyward, there just isn't a 6th receiver I think they'll do it for. The problem is he is the last guy I want touching the ball on offense and there are better blocking options. The whole 4 TE set is dumb. Just bring out an extra lineman if Smith is going to do that.

Wide Receiver (5) - Wilson and Miller stepped up in the preseason easing some fears, but this is still a weak group until proven otherwise.
DK Metcalf
Roman Wilson
Calvin Austin
Scotty Miller
Ben Skowronek
Woods didn't do anything to distinguish himself. If they keep six, I go Brandon Johnson. He is 6-2 and had a pretty good preseason compared to the other options.

Offensive Line (9) - We saw some good things from the starting five and I think individually they can perform. I'm not convinced the coaching is there to get them to perform well as a unit until deep into the season.
Broderick Jones
Isaac Seumalo
Zach Frazier
Mason McCormick
Troy Fautanu
Dylan Cook
Spencer Anderson
Andrus Peat
Ryan McCollum
I suppose there is a chance they keep 10, but I wouldn't. Not much quality depth this year.

Defensive Line (6) - If Harmon and Black continue to develop from their performance in the preseason and if Benton can live up to his potential, this group has some serious young talent. Keyword is "if".
Cam Heyward
Keeanu Benton
Derrick Harmon
Yahya Black
Daniel Ekuale
Isaiahh Loudermilk
Lee is my 7th if they keep one more. I just feel with three young guys (Benton, Harmon, and Black), the Steelers won't feel the need to keep an extra DL and instead keep an extra CB.

EDGE (4) - Best trio in the NFL. Herbig can put up some serious sack numbers as a situational pass rusher this year. He has to have one of the quickest first steps in the league.
TJ Watt
Alex Highsmith
Nick Herbig
Jack Sawyer
No question marks here.

Inside Linebacker (5) - Wilson looks improved and Holcomb appears back to health and playing at a high level. Harrison is doing just fine filling in for Roberts as the thumper. As long as Queen delivers, this is another talented group.
Patrick Queen
Payton Wilson
Cole Holcomb
Malik Harrison
Carson Bruener
It comes down to Robinson and Bruener. Robinson is pretty much a special teamer and he can step in as a run defender. I think Bruener has a similar set of skills, so I'm going with the younger player.

Cornerbacks (6) - Age and overconfidence is the only thing that worries me about this group. With a good pass rush, they have a chance to be a truly shutdown group as long as they don't try to do too much.
Jalen Ramsey
Joey Porter Jr.
Darius Slay
Brandin Echols
James Pierre
Beanie Bishop
I think the Steelers want to role out a lot of cornerbacks this season. Pierre offers special teams value and Bishop, while not great, was a playmaker last year.

Safety (4) - Please just do your job and don't be a liability. Elliott is the only one I feel really good with, but how will he be without Fitzpatrick?
DeShon Elliott
Juan Thornhill
Chuck Clark
Miles Killebrew
I would not mind if they brought in a FA safety to upgrade the depth. Easily the weakest group on the team.

Special Teams (3) - One of the best special teams units in the NFL.
Chris Bosell
Cameron Johnston
Christian Kuntz
Both punters are good, but watching the two in person, I felt Johnston's punts go a bit higher and he has more touch pinning the ball inside the 20.

This is exactly why I'm not excited for the season. Tomlin is the ultimate buzzkill.

Maybe you don’t have a strong enough buzz or maybe nee3d a different method of induction……………..

I hope they keep Skylar and kick Rudolph to the curb. Skylar is better

That isn't what those who watched all the practices said. By multiple reports he was clearly the worst QB of the 4 in practice. Despite how he played in games I think that spells his doom.
