Steelers select CB Senquez Golson

I'd rather have a 5'9" guy who can keep up with receivers, than a 6'2" guy who can't. Will he occasionally be victimized because of his height? Those tall guys who were left are going to be victimized by their lack of skill, and they won't be picking off balls to make up for it. This kid is polished, and will see the field now. Those taller guys are all projects, who need to be developed, wouldn't help us this year, and could easily be the next Cortez Allen.

I would also say that a lot of the guys in round one were far from finished products and were not great. I think the best that was available in this draft was good and then ok. There were a fair number of them but no great players in the bunch.

Not saying you are wrong, or he didn't say that, but I have seen two quotes from him saying why he turned down 1.4 million dollar contract to sign with Boston Red Sox at 17. One said something to effect that he loved football too much while he didn't love baseball or something similar, and then this below:

It was a process. I actually flew to Boston. I was a 17-year old kid, and I looked down at the paper, and there was a million dollars on it. It was hard to turn down. But football is what I love to do. Football is in my heart. I just followed my heart and it all turned out well.

Getting pressure is the key. Average secondaries look good when the rush is getting to the qb.
 
After watching his highlights this guy looks more instinctive at CB then any CB on the Steelers roster.

That is what made our D successful in the past. Without pressure all the flaws in our secondary were magnified. If we can get pressure on the QB, Golson will get a chance to make some plays.
 
What a painful memory. Little or not, this kid is a baller. We need ballers. Simple enough.

I have seen both of them as well. I also noticed a blurb in the nameless paper that said he couldn't hit a curveball so football was an easy choice. I was merely trying to voice that the ONLY concern I have with the kid is the possibility he may have a change of heart and pursue baseball at some point a few years into football. Not saying he will, just that he could.
There's no perfect corner. Deion and Rod got worked from time to time. For all those belly aching about his size, they're sure quick to dismiss the game tape. He's the anti Ike, as he can actually catch.
 
Give me a break. That ball in the highlight was clearly overthrown...how hard was it to pick that off?

Bottom line...the FO was caught with their pants down when Maxx was taken by Balt and we panicked...that exactly what happened. What a f'n disgrace.
 
I compare Golson to Jamar Fletcher former badger corner back. Same size, production, speed. Fletcher was a good nickel and dime guy who had a long career just never a starter. So if Golson can be a core special teamer and nickel guy he will at least contribute. I just don't expect him to be a starter. My mock along draft looks much different than the Steelers draft.

And he uses those instinctive skills to make up for his lack of height. Should fit nicely in our scheme with an improved pass rush.
 
Golson can play the game at a high level. Who cares how tall he is. He had 10 interceptions in the SEC. He is a true CB with ball skills. Gregory was never, ever going to be an option neither was Collins. The doobage factor was just to large. Wasn't gregory weighing in at 217-220 at 6-6. At that weight he would be highest I mean tallest CB in the NFL.

Well, with this pick it just about guarantee's the 10 yard cushion will be in play this year. As long As he can break on the ball and finally stop those come back routes that's been killing us all these years then he should be fine.

The video was quoted to respond to Spike. Not to illustrate his skills but since you seem to want to debate the play, I'll play along. As a Bama fan, I analyzed and talked about this play ad nauseum with other Bama fans as well as hearing talked about on Paul Finebaum's radio show and other local radio shows. The ball was not overthrown. O.J. Howard, who is all of 6'6" didn't even go up for the catch. The 5'9" smurf did.... when the game was on the line. I wish Cortez Allen with all of his size would make a play like that one. "The ball was catchable" is not only my opinion of that play but the large majority of the Bama fan base.

Even if he only remains a nickle back-

A nickle corner with ball skills is far more important to us than a TE with average athelticism and a poor attitude
 
I'm at the point with these drafts that I really don't care much about who goes where in which round. I just want players that will add something to the team and hopefully make the 53 man roster or practice squad. If Lake and Butler thought Golston was the best corner on the board when they picked him, then I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I used to be much more keyed in on height-weight measurables, I've learned that's a pretty stupid way to be. I want guys with ants in their pants, a strong desire to be great, tough competitors, hard hitters, et al. I think Golson fits the mold, he's gonna come in scratching and clawing..I like that and this D needs that. He fits a pretty specific role to handle the underneath stuff and add some fire to ST's. He's got great speed, short area quickness, incredible awareness and hands. You want corners like that, so how can anyone say this wasn't a good addition? Maybe they add more of an outside guy today, we'll see.

I actually think all three players drafted are high effort players with talent.

Jarvis Jones can play the game at a high level. Who cares how weak and slow he is. He had 14 sacks in the SEC. He is a true OLB with pass rush skills.........oh wait.........were we talking about Golson? Both wasted picks.

Not overthrown. The receiver wasn't reaching for the ball...he had his arms cradled out ready for the ball to drop into his hands when Golson stole it.
He seems to have that Swann type leaping ability.

There is, or was, some shorty CB in Minnesota that is supposed to be pretty good...to lazy to look it up.

I remember a 5'9, 185lb shut down corner in Clevehole by the name of Frank Minnefield.

we have seen Jarvis on the field, hard to say any pick is a wasted pick until we see first hand what they do in a Steelers uniform. I don't have to love a pick to know some of the ones I might not be high on pan out.

Harrison and Willie Parker might agree.
