Yes folks it is that time of the year again. Coolie's annual obsession with all things UH continues
Last year was an absolute disaster for the Coogs, but 2nd year Coach Willie Fritz has done a lot to right the ship. The team lost some good players to the transfer portal top among them Safety A.J. Haulcy, but they brought in some new blood and have some quality guys back from last season
One of the better returning players is WR Stephon Johnson. SR. 6'2" 190 with speed to stretch the field, even with horrible QB play last season he flashed some play making ability. With a new transfer in at QB (Connor Weigman) hopefully he can showcase his talents and help the offense improve from their god awful showing last season. Johnson has really good speed and runs solid routes. He uses his hands well and will bring down more than his share of 50/50 balls.
Which brings us to new QB Connor Weigman. JR 6'3" 210 5 star recruit out of high school, had a good start to his career at A&M and then got injured. He tried to play through the injury and just made it worse. He lost support and his starting job and bounced to hopefully greener pastures back home in Houston. He would have to cut off an arm to be any worse than the guys who played for UH last season. I am hopefull he brings a steady hand and some solid QB play back to this team that sorely needs it.
Hoping to protect his back is OT David Ndukwe Sr '6" 325, he moved to the starting line up last season and gave up just one sack in 277 dropbacks, granted part of that could be that the other guts sucked so bad someone else's guy beat his to the QB....but he did give solid blocking with footwork and really good size for his position. He is a solid run blocker and can move the pile.
One of the bright spots on an up and down defense is CB Latrell McCutchin Jr. Sr 6'1" 185 he had 37 tackles and 3 pass break ups last season starting all 12 games at CB. He also brings Special teams experience with a blocked kick last season. good size and speed, tackles well and makes life difficult for receivers. the coogs were 28th nationally in passing defense so while not elite they were better than the other parts of the team
