LMAO, Tomlin with pure comedy.

Tomlin is giddy about the prospects of winning 12-11 every week which would be historic.

Speaking of historic proportions.
AI has it wrong in terms of best ever D in points allowed.
Steelers should be #2, not the Rats.
9.9 < 10.2

The Atlanta Falcons defense from 1977, nicknamed the "Grits Blitz," allowed the fewest points per game in NFL history with just 9.2 points allowed per game, according to StatMuse. In the modern era (since 1961), the 2000 Baltimore Ravens defense ranks second, allowing 10.3 points per game, according to a Reddit thread and StatMuse.

Here's a more detailed look:
  • 1977 Atlanta Falcons: This defense, led by coach Marion Campbell, is widely regarded as one of the best in NFL history. They allowed just 9.2 points per game, a record that still stands.

  • 2000 Baltimore Ravens: This defense, led by Ray Lewis, was dominant, allowing only 10.3 points per game. They also set records for fewest rushing yards allowed (970) and fewest total points allowed (165) in a 16-game season.

  • 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers: This Steelers defense allowed 9.9 points per game.

The Falcons was a surprise for me. Let alone it was in 1977!
I predict this D will prove Tomlin right and we allow < 9.2 !

Also missing the 1975 LA Rams, who allowed 135.

1) 1977 ATL (129)
2) 1975 LA Rams (135)
3) 1976 Steelers (138)

What would be interesting is to see advanced stats that filter out defensive and ST TDs against, as well as short fields following TO’s.

They'd need to post 6 shutouts to beat the 5 from the 1976 Steelers defense and of course 9.9 points a game average.

I doubt they could post one shutout.

They’d have to top 11 shutouts by the Pottsville Maroons! lol

The 1926 Pottsville Maroons team holds the NFL record for most shutouts in a season, with 11. The 1932 Chicago Bears are second with 8 shutouts.

In the modern era (since 1970), the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers had the most shutouts with 5.

But I’ll take the 6 which would certainly be of historical proportions!

Missing where?
I was talking about the NFL record for least points allowed per game by a D.
Atlanta is #1 at 9.2

This team needs to top the Falcons 9.2 to make NFL history!
Or even the 76 Steelers 9.9 would be fantastic!

I must agree that for him to suggest the D has the talent to do things of historical proportions is quite a bold statement.
Especially when that defense has allowed a combined 73 points in the first quarter of the last four playoff games. Some of that was from turnovers, but still….

When you measure it against Steeler Defensive historical proportions, that's a tall, tall task.

Pick an era,70's,90,s, 2005,2008 or even 2010.
These guys couldn't carry Greg Lloyd's jockstrap.

Neither could I, and I wouldn't want to.

Not defending them in the true meaning of what you are saying.

He was asked this morning about Thornill's quote saying we can be one of the best defenses of all time.

Tomlin said, "we have the talent and we have the schematics, to do big big things, and by big things I mean historical things"

HAHAHA, like are we going to give up 50 points and 400 yards rushing in the next playoff game???

WTF is he talking about, I'm guessing he wasn't paying attention last December and in the playoffs, when he didn't know Pickens showed up 2 hours late to the KC game.

Schematics??????? Does he really believe what he's saying?

Every single sentence contains schematics and/or juncture. He's like fingernails on a chalkboard at this point.

Well Lloyd had big balls

These guys just have big mouths
It's funny to me that the league is all about the first team to 27 points and Tomlin thinks he can reconstruct the '85 Bears when his team was hurt the most by the rule changes years ago.

Yall just love to complain and pick at things.
How did you want him to answer that question?

“We suck, I suck, all of the players and coaches suck and we are forfeiting the season.”

Could have just kept it light by not saying much at all.
Maybe something like we’re excited about our defense and looking forward to the many challenges coming our way this season.
Certainly not the bullshit Tomlin threw out there. We have the chance to be historical. This guy never learns. To him it’s all about the clever little sound bites, I’m tired of of it!

“We are working hard to achieve our goals. We are developing nicely and possibly ahead of schedule.”

How about just tackling well and in gang fashion. That will go a long long way.

If they want to learn how to do that try rolling out some Steel Curtain film. Textbook tackling, swarming and even by today's standards legal as all hell.
Just watch Lambert and Ham to see how it's done in the open field.

I see a lot of passive engagement, waiting for the runner to get to you, then some half *** step to the side, high arm tackles, and a bunch of guys looking.

This bend don't break crap has made them soft. They'll need to defend every blade of grass and do it as ONE,if they want any shot at history.

And stop that group picture nonsense after a turnover. You haven't accomplished a damn thing yet.

That’s a bit out of character for Tomlin to publicly say something like that.

This wasn’t “coach” speak. You know it, I know it and Tomlin knows it.

This was Bravado through and through, you can’t un-say something once you’ve said it.

There is a reason there is coach speak and many coaches know how to use it just for these occasions.

Grasping at straws in my eyes. I don’t think anything Tomlin says gets by a few people here that just flat out hate him. Wouldn’t matter what was said, they wouldn’t like it.

I’m still looking for the clip itself, but the original post here conveniently left out the “we gotta write that story,” included in the quote I just read elsewhere.

To me it literally translates to, “we have the potential, but we have to do it.” And I don’t see anything at all wrong with that.

Could have sworn this was addressed already but its basically coach speak.
Guarantee you can find 31 other coaches saying the exact same thing. Its as cliche as it comes. Not sure why the tight pants gallery is getting so worked up about it. There's absolutely nothing to complain and murmur about at this time of year yet here we are. I guess if youre not complaining about something these days youre not living.

What now concerns me is cool shades has created prime bulletin board material for the Steelers opponents this season.
This defense over the years with changing pieces here and there has largely been a major disappointment. They’ve won exactly NOTHING.
Four years in a row the highest paid defense. They got steamrolled last year by the Eagles, Bengals, Chiefs, Ravens.
This is really getting concerning with these players running their big mouths and now the the head coach talking about historical defense.
Do we not remember that this Tomlin lead defense QUIT on the Ravens in the playoffs?
This defense is showing up big time this summer against an Artie Smith led offense. Are you kidding me?
Do you really believe what the Steelers' players and coaches say in August is going to impact the results of games against the Ravens, Lions or Bills in December and January?

Kinda like unleashing hell and looked past their next opponent, who then kicks their *** and sends them home.

Talk is cheap and paper doesn't make champions.

So we can find quotes from 31 other head coaches saying their defense or offense is going to put up historical great numbers?

tommy would prefer

"thornhill must be on drugs....**** we are going to be lucky to stop a girl scout troup"

damn, it is just ******* coach speak

no one really listens

except to ***** about ****
LOL, I'm all for optimism and being positive, but to talk about being a historical great defense and bringing up schematics after what we witnessed the last 5 games last year and the past decade in the playoffs is beyond idiotic, it's about the same as him talking about playing the Patriots again during an interview with Dungy before we played Jax in the playoffs.

How about, "I think we have the talent to be a very good group" "We have the guys to do alot of different things with this group"

Coach speak? Can you find quotes from all the other Coaches about them being historically great this season?
