I might have to call it my two and a half Nichols if Lee can stack more solid running performances together. But that is just it these bubble players will have to do just that to squeeze themselves onto the 53. Stack good performances.

* Lew Nichols- I liked what I saw from him, he ran hard for a healthy 5.2 per carry average. He has floated around practice squads a few years with the Packers and Eagles. If nothing else it gives him a decent start to make the Steelers practice squad. Ultimately that is where my money lies.

* Ke'Shawn Williams- made the most of his two catches which led the team in receiving yardage with 55 yards and threw in a TD to boot. A good start for the 5’9 former Hoosiers receiver. The Steelers could use a returner and he apparently will get his opportunity there as well.

* Scotty Miller- Made some clutch catches led the WRs in the game with 4. With Wilson also showing well early, I would think he has made a case to be the 4th or 5th receiver. I give him pretty good odds to stick on the 53.

* Mount Washington- With his blocking ability and towering presence in the red zone he makes a strong case for three TE sets. Do you put him on the field over Wilson? Will be interesting to see how the reps get divided come regular season.

* Jack Sawyer- he flashed and there was a glimpse of him being a modern-day warrior. I look forward to him making some mean mean strides. Catch the mist, catch the myth. Catch the mystery, catch my drift? Puns aside I would like to see some of those pressures turn into sacks.

* Kaleb Johnson- perhaps not the per average desired but he showed that toughness and bounce outside capable ability. His pass catching still looks like it will be a work in progress. He is one player I presume will continue to show better as the preseason progresses. Hopefully the teams offensive run blocking will follow suit.

* Yahya Black- when the team faces the strong running teams, I expect his reps to increase. Yahya will need to develop a better pass rush repertoire but coming off some embarrassing late season run defense performances, he will be needed. For me there is no question that he makes the roster and situationally contributes.

* Derrick Harmon- I can see the team is force feeding him a lot of reps which could be for multipurpose reasons. They have the guy starting out of the gates… the only rookie slated for that, so part of his preseason reps will be to make sure he is ready and capable. That would be mentally as well as physically. Is his conditioning at the point where he can effectively hold up for the entirety of the season? Is he comfy with what he is seeing on the field? The team will do what they can to answer those questions by playing him and often. I would expect they would rotate players in throughout to aid his cause.

* The secondary - I will lump them together and thought the depth shined. Players like Trice might end up the odd man out if he can’t find his way back onto the field this preseason. Beanie made his case to be kept in mind on a deep group and Pierre showed he can contribute outside of special teams.

My two and a half cents:

So backup QBs shined with vanilla preseason defensive schematics not forgotten. But good play is always a plus.

I think Broderick has already came a decent ways from day 1 position change back to his natural side. A A Ron will need him to continue that course to help him stay upright.

More than anything football is back. I try to keep the negativity away, hopefully the team will help me in that pursuit.

I will continue hoping in one hand and cleveland brown in the other.

Nice write up

I think Williams entered the convo with ROC as that fringe receiver trying to crack the roster. Not sure how many tiny receivers a run heavy team can carry on the roster, but he looked solid (as did Miller who looks to be locking into a roster spot).

Overall a nice performance and the QBs both looked pretty sharp and accurate despite even throwing into the lava section of the field.

As far as Wilson:Washington and splitting reps I’d hope if we are run focused Mount Washington is at least getting 60/40 split and we roll with those 3 TE sets frequently. He is weapon that needs to be utilized properly.

Among a group of inexperienced players in the secondary Echols showed some decent plays as well.

Overall a solid performance to build on.

I would think Echols is locked into being the 4th corner. He had a good camp per reports and showed well last night. For the teams that like to go heavy WR formations, it is good to have a deeper group than in years past.

Liked the signing when it happened
Like his attitude

Lotta fight in that dog
Reminds me a bit of Mike Hilton in some ways

There will be some pretty decent secondary players finding themselves on the outside looking in. We seem to have loaded up some depth back there.

This does appear to be one of the deeper defensive units we’ve seen in years.

I think the top 4 CB slots are locked in stone.
JPJ, Ramsey, Slay and in the slot, Echols.

Then there are two questions,
do they keep 5 or 6?
And who are those players, because you have:
Corey Trice, who is really good but also perpetually injured
Bishop, who is a slot guy exclusively.
Pierre, who is an outside guy and coverage ST ace
D'Shawn Jamison, who has stood out in camp abd also returns kicks
Cameron McCutcheon, who is another bigger outside corner who has been getting Trice's snaps while he is out. He also has looked good and should have had a pick last night.
Add to that Kent, a seventh round draft pick Cb/PR who is currently injured

And if they keep 6, they will have a hard cut at S, LB or DL to make....

I think they keep 6. Kent missing time is doing him no favors. Especially in a crowded room. Pierre can do two things so I think that gives him the 5th edge. Bishop IMO would be snagged up from someone due to some experience and speed. My guess is he gets the 6th nod.

Trice might find himself on IR but he would be the wild card. But the pretty much took his outside role away signing two capable . So my guess he is the odd man out. Cam would be a solid practice squad addition.

GREAT write up slash, thank for this one and all the great ones along the way, Appreciate yaz and just for the record…………..
worth more than 2 1/2 cents, but willing to pay that.

On the Oline, my concerns arent the starters... but i do think our depth took a huge hit over the past two years

I like McCollum as the backup C
Spenser Anderson as the utility OL
And Calvin Anderson as well as Dylan Cook are ok as the backup Tackles..
I'm not sold on Scharping as the top guard backup,
Doug Nester and Aiden Williams didnt show much last night.

Last year we were loaded. This season we may have barely enough if Injuries stay away.

I was playing with the idea that they keep bishop and lose a safety. Killebrew is getting up there in age and bishop has a lot of st snaps...
i would hate if the fourth outside guy was Pierre over Trice or McCutcheon. They overrate ST coverage especially since with all those aces making the team, their coverage squads are usually middle of the pack.

Anderson will be back and they just signed Peat which is a wild card in the equation. My thinking would be he solidifies the Gs. For me the concern which has been my same early offseason concern out of the gate is T depth. Not sold on Cook. Yeah Fester and Maiden can kick rocks. Ditto Scharping.

Definitely a little more difficult decisions this time around huh?

McCucho is a real sleeper, PS minimum for sure but I think injuries have ended Trice chances this year and the rook might take his place if he continues to shine.

Also given that Ramsey is seeing Nickel snaps, as long as the top 3 are healthy they will always see the field, ramsey going free safety on 2 CBs set. This means that with Thornhill playing well he is your other FS, leaving an extra spot open for an extra CB.

I think Ramsey, JPJ, Slay, Elliott, Thornhill are locks and the regular starters plus Echols as main CB backup (outside and Nickel), that's 6 roster spots and that includes 4 possible outside starters and 2 Nickel.

Then Pierre, Killebrew have an advantage due to ST making it 8 and leaving one theoretical spot for Bishop, Trice, McCutcheon and finally Castro the only other safety. If any of the young guys can provide ST prowess then Pierre or Killebrew might be in trouble.

I would like to see the star players - Rodgers, Watt, Heyward, Metcalf, Freiermuth, etc. - get some reps next week against the Buccaneers. Never liked starters getting zero game time before the season starts.
You mean you don’t want to see the team slow out of the gates?

(Deep breaths trying to stay positive trying)

😅

I'm really worried about the young guys like Rodgers, Heyward and Watt being too nervous opening day ...

If there is any indication from 1 game, it seems like this version of Arty Smitty's offense may be different. Looks like they are going to be on the attack on early downs than before.
The QB depth right now seems better than anticipated, especially Skylar. Rudy was above the collar (except for that sack, it was on him. He had all day)
RBs TBD. I would like to see more of Johnson in with the 1's and what he could do there.
The WR room would also be a quiet strength with Rodgers and even Rudy.
TE's I would like to see Galbreath more. I like Baby Heyward, but Galbreath may be a better option on the roster as your 4th (if they keep 4).
OL-the starters were solid against the Jags starters. 77 looked good as well as 76. They kept Rudy clean. The sack was on Rudy as they gave him time to throw. Hell, he had all day back there. The backup ones, there was some good individual play but as a collective, it's what you'd expect.

Harmon and Black were not noticeable. I want to watch again from the all 22 to form a better opinion. I thought once Sawyer settled he played solid. He was in on plays and was able to get off of blocks to stop a few runs. I think this kid is going to be good. Leal was ok. Holcomb started off slow but once his motor got warmed up he was coming in on plays. He wasn't bashful. He didn't look like Devin Bush. ILB could be a strength for sure.
CB battle for the bottom rung is going to be a fun battle. I think for sure you have to count Echols on the roster. I liked what I saw from McCutcheon and Daryl Porter. McMichael is also someone I'm going to pay more attention to. They may have bumped Trice and Pierre for their spots. We'll see in the next couple of weeks.
Safety, I'd like to see if Thornhill can be more consistent like he was under Spagnolo.

-The starting OL looked good. I would've liked more running plays to see the run blocking.

-When it comes to WR4 and WR5, I go with Miller and Skowronek. There will be a temptation to keep Woods, who is next on my list, because he's a veteran, but both Miller and Skowronek are good on special teams and Skowronek is a good blocker.

-Washington should get a lot of snaps this year and be a key role player in both the passing and running game.

-As expected, the CB position is very deep. Echols as CB4 is pretty unreal and I definitely keep Bishop. He's a solid player and flashed signs of being a playmaker last year.

-We saw a little bit of the potential the Steelers expected when they drafted Harmon, Sawyer, and Black.

-Overall, good tackling from the defense.

-Payton Wilson is looking like an experienced veteran and hopefully this translates to the regular season.

I would be cautious about saying the offense looks different. In 2023 Pickett only had 2 incompletions, a perfect QB rating and the team was 5/5 on TD drives. It's just going to come down to what Tomlin allows the team to do once the lights come on.
Both QBs looked good and threw accurate balls. Wilson looked better than I expected which is a good sign. I thought Max Hurleman looked good. His catches were not easy and he is versatile. Just don't know if there is room for him or not. Running game early was not good. If Najee would have had the game Johnson did people would be calling for his head. I think Johnson will be fine, but the main issue is the run blocking is just not very good. Defense was pretty solid. We had good tackling but pass rush was non-existent. We didn't have our main guys so not too concerned yet. Also we were not aggressive and lacked blitzes. Hopefully that is just a preseason thing and not a trend like last year

just finished the 1st half..

Good QB play. you would expect that with 2 guys that have starter experience going against def that does not gameplan.
I liked seeing different offensive plays than last year.
Number 20 looked alot like 22 from last year
Oline and dline did ok
hope they use Washington like that when games count
they should have given Harrison #92 just because
was it me or were corners playing closer to the receiver this year?

PS it was good to see Holcomb back on the field

Great write-up Slasher. Good insight and player evaluations.
Both QBs, Rudy and Skylar looked pretty damn good which could make a difficult decision for young Will Howard. Sure wish the kid hadn’t gotten hurt and could have played.
Mount Washington is a huge target in the red zone. They simply must get him involved this year and not ignore him again. I kind of adopted him since his nickname is the city neighborhood where I grew up in Pittsburgh.
Hopefully Tomlin can remove himself from the offense and just allow Smith and Rodgers to call the shots.
