Watt gets paid

3 years deal is a win for the Steelers. TJ should have at least 2 more huge seasons and even if he drops off a bit for year 3, will still be one of the best in the league.

Watt probably wanted a longer deal. If he stays healthy, he may land another good deal, just not a blockbuster.

Healthy being the key word.

Herbig is already on the roster - just not ready yet...
Not sure he can hold up against the run. I do like his pass rush ability. Maybe captain Jack can chip in….

a decent deal for both sides. Watt gets to be the highest paid non QB and top Garrett.

The Steelers get a possible exit ramp if his play declines before he hits his mid 30s and before they need to pay the QB they hopefully draft next year his 2nd contract

I wonder if this was Watt capitulating since it’s only 3 years instead of something like 5 years

Herbig is a talented pass rusher but not an every down LBer since he is nowhere close to Watt in terms of stopping the run. Captain Jack might be the answer.

This likely isn't popular but my feeling was it would always get done but I would feel it's too much for one player. It's exactly how I feel. I agree 3 years is a good compromise given his age, but I don't want to be sitting in the same position in 2028. The cap hit will work because we won't be paying a QB big money during this contract.

I'd like to see TJ being more of a force at the end of the season.
They probably will make him the highest paid nonQB in 3 years for a third time.

I read Watt's new deal is actually a smaller percentage of the salary cap than his contract extension in 2021.

That’s an interesting tidbit.

Crazy how much the cap keeps going up.

This extension gives him about 50% of what the bottom 16 teams spend on average on their entire defensive side of the ball.

Hopefully he earns that loot cuz it is definitely a large number even if a lower percentage than his previous extension.

And it shows the Steelers remain true to their loyal ways and their belief that spending on D is the way to build a roster…time will tell.

I’m quite sure most of us assumed this would happen. To get 2 contracts in your career as #1 earner in the NFl besides QB is a frigging huge accomplishment. TJ and the coaches will be heavily scrutinized this season. When you are the #1 paid defensive player….all eyes are on…..and rightly so. Coaching staff had better resolve the old chip play, otherwise this signing is worthless.
I’m sure TJ has heard some criticism over the last stretch of games. I think he’s got it in him to have a monster year. Definitely going to be interesting. No excuses. They have brought on veterans. For the money these guys are making,i do not want to hear about how it takes a bunch of games to gel. It’s time to put up.

Hard to feel good about paying $40 million/year to a player that had 11.5 sacks last year and only 2 over the season ending 1-4 stretch when they were needed the most. I guess we’ll see…

Bingo.

Plus if they are all worn down in January that’s on Tomlin for not scheming to stop an older defense from getting abused in time of possession all year as has happened so many seasons with his conservative crap schemes on offense and defense

It should be a smaller percentage of the cap. In 2021, Watt was 26 going on 27 and entering the prime of his career. At the end of this deal, he'll be 34 and well past it.

I was glad to see it was only a 3-year deal. Garrett's cap hit is an astonishing $64.9 million in 2029 when he turns 34.

For 41 mill I'm gonna need 20 sacks, his usual couple of game ending strip sack fumble TD's, I need that high leg kick &

I NEED FOR THE STOOPID DEFENSIVE CO-ORDINATOR TO MOVE HIM AROUND SO THEY STOP DOUBLING HIM..

Let's zoom in your complaint about Coach Tomlin (again)...

"...if they are all worn down in January that's on Tomlin..."

Raise your hand if you know the answer.

How many coaches are responsible for creating the schedule that their team plays each year???

Whilst we wait on a response - there was uproar (here) when the schedule was released last year about the gauntlet of 3 games down the final stretch in the December time frame. Remember that??? Compound that with George being sidelined due to injury and Russell playing like Neil O'Donnell - welp, we know what happened.

Back to the question. You play who's on your schedule and roster when available. Period the end. How about pointing a finger at Ol' Rog and the schedulers???

Any more needs before you blow a gasket???

I don't think the schedule has anything to do with the players wearing down. 🤔
