Steelers signing Robert Woods to a 1 year contract

He isn't even a sure-fire lock for a roster spot. He has to earn it and can be cut with no issues. I don't get the angst people have with this. He could be a useful mentor, or he could get cut. Bringing him in considering what else we have right now past our top 4 seems like a no brainer to me.

A total zero risk with potential reward.

At a minimum he helps through camp/preseason with the several younger receivers.

Why trade Wilson for a 6th when you have 3 more years of him at minimum cost, worth more the risk of keeping him to see if he develops than getting a 6th

Beats cutting him if ya can get a 6th for him.
I’m not keeping a guy on the roster just cuz he cheap (maybe Art Nutting would). Do you think guys should get a spot just cuz they’re cheap? We have plenty of cap room.

I think there are some issues with the kid that couldn’t even sniff the field ALL last year with how thin that receiving room was. I know he was injured early, but is he Senquez Golsen? Or could he not learn this simplistic playbook/scheme (big red flag). Or does Artie simply want bigger receivers that can block like Skowronek and not a parade of Smurfs?

So I simply think he needs to show out early and prove his worth, hope he does or it was just a wasted 3rd…which is why I’d like to try to get a 6-7th before just cutting him.

Hopefully he surprises me, but I see a lot of red flags there suggesting something is up with him and currently have very low hopes of him contributing this year.

ok, then Roman Wilson will have no problem sending him packing.
Win/win for Steelers

If it was a meritocracy in Pittsburgh, I’d agree. Tomlin has his favorites, Pat Pete played every game and Cordarrelle Patterson (who is STILL on the team) was getting snaps all year.

I am more optimistic. There is a lot of conjecture that I think is simply not true. In the absence of actual information, the media likes to make up their own narrative. The kid was hurt a huge part of the year including most of training camp. Let's all relax and wait and see. Williamson and Lolley, who have been quite accurate recently, have pretty high hopes for him still.

I'm assuming very little or none is guarenteed so he is a camp body till proven otherwise. Unless Roman Wilson is a short bus rider and just can't get the playbook he is 4. I don't know how you can lose Skoronek gunner ability. So that is 5. Woods fights for 6.

The 7th round corner could be the gunner replacement.

It's kinda nice to have the WR room with enough competent bodies to fill it this season.

I hope the Aiyuk deal is finally discarded.

I truly think Andy Weidl has a lot to do with the make up of draft since he has been here. Kahn took over, but Andy joined the staff as well. our philosophy immediately changed, and we have been sounder in direction and kind of talented players we have been getting.

It is nice to see we have talented choices, and not just desperation leftovers.

Woods caught 20 passes for 203 yards and 0 TD last year on a team that threw 570 passes and that lost their #1 for half the season.

Austin was 36/548/2, Jefferson was 24/276/2 on a team that threw 499 passes.

Didn’t think they could downgrade from Van Jefferson, but here we are.

I am more optimistic.

You always are, and I truly appreciate that.

My opinions were in no way media biased but simply built on what I know.

He got himself hurt
He couldn’t sniff the field
He produced jack squat in a very thin room
He is a Smurf

Thus the conclusion that I came to “he better show out early” and I truly hope he does

But he has given me zero reason to be optimistic about that hope so far.

I do know this: Woods the guy that was brought in can play outside (282 snaps last year) or inside (115). And in those limited snaps he produced almost what our WR2 did last year even though he was 4th ish on Texans depth chart. I know he is a bigger guy than the Smurf and he can block.

If a made a chart today I’d certainly stack him ahead of Wilson on it cuz no way in hell I pencil in a guy at 4 who has done absolutely zilch so far.
He’s gotta earn that spot.

I know Woods is a no risk signing. He can be cut with out any implications. I also know he isn’t done quite yet.

Wilson was pretty highly touted, he was also injured rookie year and never materialized at all. Some will say this season is his rookie year where-as I’m not buying that. He needs to step up and play as a year 2, he needed to put the work in while healing

I also know they both need to work hard and let their talent(s) shine for it isn’t just a competition between the two.

Talent will always trump or at least should be the biggest factor.

If you watch what he did last season, he was outstanding at getting the first down, which is something the Steelers desperately need. He's a possession WR, sure handed, but he won't get many YAC and he doesn't have the speed to take the top off the defense. But he has a knack for exploiting zone coverage and he has outstanding route running to get separation from BS in man coverage. I think he'll add something positive to the WR room on his play style alone.

or he gets cut for someone doing a better job.
This is a no lose situation.

The really outside thought I had in the signing was they attempt to begin negotiations with George, just dipping their toes in the pool a bit…then George responds with “damn that water is freezing” and jumps out of the pool.

Negotiations go south, George holds out and Woods is an insurance plan for negotiations gone wrong.

A very outside thought, but it did pop in my head that the Steelers may at least put feelers out with George to see where his wants are at. Of the distance is too far it opens up the possibility of trade scenarios. They’d be simpletons if they didn’t try to see what his thought process towards a new contract are sooner rather than later.

Again, 100% spitballing a very random thought that popped through my peyote driven 🧠

Would have to be damn good and field capable. Skoronek can catch and is a reasonable target.
I heard some good things so I am hopeful. I like him more the Carson, unless he can take the long snapping duties.

And that is why he was signed. Insurance, depth and mentorship. I don't get why some have an issue with it.

Solid thinking. I feel the Steelers have dottled in the past on matters like this. It cost them in the end.

TJ Watt is a good example, had they PRO-Actioned his extension prior to the helmet thrower's, they might have gotten away a little less costly. As it stands, TJ rightfully so, should get a nice little raise.

On the GP scenario, They most certainly need to wet the toes NOW, not after the fact.

Pro-action--------NOT------Re-action

Peyote gives us clear vision and is our friend.
