NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Texans are trying to move Swearinger in a deal, just two seasons after they selected the safety in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Rapoport has heard from two teams that Houston has reached out to about a potential trade.

Texans general manager Rick Smith told reporters on Tuesday that the team is always engaged in trade discussions.

"He's a really good football player for us," Smith said of Swearinger, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Swearinger has started 22 games over his first two seasons, but is coming off a disappointing 2014 for Houston. He graded out in the bottom 10 among 87 safeties last season, according to ProFootballFocus.com, and was particularly deficient against the run.

Swearinger is owed just $1.6 million over the final two years of his rookie deal, making him a potentially attractive target in trade talks. The Texans, meanwhile, appear to be back in the market for safety help in the draft

Don't the Texans need QB help? Boy do I have a deal for them on a back-up QB.

Seems odd that the Texans would dump a guy who is young and cheap. If this is true (and I'm dubious), I'd bet that D.J. has been butting heads with the coaching staff.

He's an aggressive, hard-hitting in-the-box safety who doesn't give you much in coverage --- I'm thinking he's not a great fit for us because we want two safeties who are interchangeable rather than one guy who's always in the box leaving Mitchell as the deep safety.

Texans going for a S on the second round probably

no thanks. not at all.

We heard the same negative scouting on Brice McCain - he panned out alright while he was here...

Yes, but Swearinger will always be limited in coverage. He's like an extra linebacker...we need a safety that can actually cover people.

Tomlin liked him a lot

Mike Tomlin: D.J. Swearinger “really jumps off the tape”

While noting he wasn’t “highly familiar” with Swearinger before beginning his study of Houston, Tomlin said the 23-year-old South Carolina product “really jumps off the tape.”

“I really admire the way he plays,” Tomlin said, according to a transcript of his remarks from the club. “He plays with a great deal of heart and passion. He is consistently physical. He does a lot for them. He plays in deep defense. He plays in underneath zone. He plays man. He will man up against tight ends, running backs and even wide receivers. He is a participant in their blitz game as well.

“He has a well-rounded game. He is one of those on the rise, young and talented type of guys in our league.”

can he cover a TE?

Me either. Pass. Granted, living in Texans country I tend to not take anything they do seriously, but this move, Im not surprised.

too slow for a safety, especially for a short one (5'10"). Shamarko has more tools, hope he puts the brains to earn a starter spot.

Big reach there by the texans

Shamarko didn't even sniff the field as a starter in his second season, talk about putting all your eggs in one basket...I'd take any help we can get at this point

they started DJ cause they didn't have anyone better, we still had Polamalu, even as old as he was, also they had to give it a try to their 2nd round pick. If shamako were playing for the texans I bet he would have also seen the field.

Now I'm not advocating for giving Shamarko the starting spot just because, but I think we could find someone at least as good as Swearinger between the 4th and 6th round. Already on the team is also Golden, maybe he becomes the next great player to appear from nowhere earning a spot through Special Teams play

No thanks, obviously there are issues with this guy or they wouldn't be trading him.
