Kovacevic: Brown holdout hypocritical and hollow

He signed his new contract after 2011 where he had 69 catches for 1100 yards and 2 TD's, the following year he had 66 catches for 780 yards and 5 TD's. So you could say he didn't really earn that contract as of the end of 2012, the Steelers took a leap of faith and gave him big money when he didn't play up to it, now he's had two big years and wants it reworked, should the Steelers have asked for some of it back after 2012?
I think he deserves more, but show up and have another big season and the money will come.

$17M in dead money over 3 years if we cut or trade AB. If you think the dead money for Woodley was bad, this is much much worse.

This will never happen financially, because the numbers don't work to trade him.

The thing with considering options is just that consider them and decide based on what will be best for the team and not a fan that thinks the world will end if a player is traded. Lots of folks thought the world would end when Wallace left but it kept on spinning just the same.

And Wallace hasn't put up as good the numbers since he left because he didn't have as good a QB throwing to him. Wasn't Miami trying to unload him and his big contract?
Plaxico Burress was a pretty good WR too and the Steelers won SB XL the year AFTER he left.

He has the Steelers over a barrel

Brown is entering the fourth year of the six-year, $43 million contract, and is set to make $6 million in guaranteed money, with a $1.7 million signing bonus. Brown is likely looking for a deal akin to the 8-year, $132 million deal Calvin Johnson signed in 2012, when Johnson was 26 years old.

Brown’s holdout isn’t a sign of greed; it is a sign of knowledge of the business that is the NFL. He will be approaching 30 years old by the time his current contract is up, which would drive down his value in contract talks greatly. No team will be willing to hand a 30 year-old receiver a longterm deal that is high in guaranteed dollars. After establishing himself as the top receiver in the NFL at 26 years old, his time to cash in is now.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are notorious for playing hardball in contract negotiations, expressing an unwillingness to take care of their receivers in recent years. When Wallace expressed displeasure with his contract in 2012, the Steelers turned around and handed Brown a six-year deal, and lost Wallace following the 2012 Season. The team also refused to pay Emmanuel Sanders, and lost him quickly in free agency to Denver in 2014.

Brown’s situation may be different, as the Steelers offense would be devastated without him. Outside of Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton, there isn’t any quality depth within the receiving corps. Brown is seemingly unstoppablewith his precise route running and other worldly quickness.

Brown’s displeasure with his contract is not a promising sign for Steelers brass and fans alike

I believe Wallace is in Minnesota now.

Maybe he is online reading the boards and is seeing all the trade him posts. In reality there are lots of options for him and the Steelers. Hopefully he will play out this contract until time for an extension at the same level as last year. In 2016 there is an increase in the cap and the Woodley dead money is gone. So there should be a lot of money to sign and extend guys as well as maybe a free agent or two if some become available that the steelers want.

He was also hurt in 2012, missed three games and wasn't 100% when he did come back.

AB doesn't have anyone over a barrel but himself. He shouldn't have signed a 6 year deal if he thought he would be worth more half way through it. He wasn't worth what he was signed for during the 1st 2 years. Only last year did he surpass his contract worth. Can he keep doing it? Hopefully. But, the Steelers won't cave and won't give him an extension for another 2 years. If he continues to whine about it, he won't sign another contract with the Steelers. They can wait and cut him or trade him for draft picks now or next year and deal with the cap hits. I hope this blows over as I have liked AB up until this stunt of his.

If he holds out I assume the Steelers don't have to pay him anything but would his numbers still count against the cap? Seriously, I don't know the answer to that.

Like I said earlier, tough. He shouldn't have signed a 6 year contract then.

Three years left on the contract. No way I renegotiate now. Maybe with a year or two left.

And teams sign these contracts knowing the player can get hurt, where both parties really lose.

apparently last night on Twitter,, brown refuted claims he will hold out.. a little vague tho.

"I'll be there" 4sho

"Everyday be grateful; thankful for everything u have, you can always have more, but you can also have less"

he just wanted to be known he would like a pay rise but he won't miss any games or mandatory training. I think as usual the media made a big thing ouf of it.
Probably he already talked with the F.O, and they are agreeing to an extension for next season or something like it

He just had a new born baby. He's a dad. That's why he's not at voluntary work outs. End thread...

This article is now ironically hypocritical and hollow...

Very strong possibility this story exploded based on little information.

Check your stats, Browns first year under the contract he missed three games due to injury, and when he came back wasn't 100%. Still managed to catch 5 TD's, 66 catches, 787 yards as the #2 that year. In 2013, his SECOND year on the contract he set a Steelers record with 1,499 receiving yards, to go along with 110 catches and 8 TD's. The year BEFORE he signed the contract, he had 69 catches for 1,100 yards as the #2. Brown's production isn't new and out of nowhere. It's been consistent since his second year when he surpassed Sanders as the #2 guy. He's worked his way into the position he is currently in by constantly getting better. He's gotten better each year he's been in the league, even in his injury shortened year, he still bettered his TD numbers and his catch %.

Randall Cobb makes more than Brown, his best year (this past year) is on par with Browns SECOND season. Jeremy Maclin makes more, his best year (also last year) is in between Browns second season and his 2013 season, but his catch % is WAY below Browns. He's been outplaying this contract for awhile now.

Again, lets look at the first three years of the contract, the three years that he has gotten better and better and put himself in the conversation of BEST WR.

2012 - Base of 540,000 8.5m signing bonus - cap hit 2.2m
2013 - Base of 650,000 - cap hit 3.1
2014 - Base of 730,000 - cap hit 4.5.

Those are MAJOR bargains for the Steelers. And all of this might not even matter one little bit as we are now learning that AB was absent because of the birth of his child. So far this is nothing more than rumor. But it doesn't change the fact that he's been underpaid and a major bargain for the Steelers.

Well AB is at OTA's this week so I guess this was all blown up by the media, as usual. He'll get a contract offer in 2017 and Bell will get his next year in 2016 - both with one year left on their deals.

Wait ... AB is at OTA's? Where is the "mass media" with the story? They were all over the "AB to holdout" thing .... I just assumed we'd get updates if he wasn't there this week or if he showed up. Silly me.

Colbert must be busy re-arranging his draft board since he was all set to trade up for a wide receiver...
