How dumb do you have to be to test positive for the chronic at the combine?

I think you should google the Steelers history of run-ins with the law. There never was such a thing as "the Steeler way" if you believe that means they had a roster full of guys with no character risks. Shooting at police helicopters on the Ohio Turnpike, putting together a multi-state prostitution ring, having pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the car when pulled over by the cops, Bar fights and more; these are all part of the Steelers players' history during the period when most folks claim there was a "Steeler way" as far as character.

Shooting at the helicopter was Ernie Holmes who was in court to answer for it and evidence was presented that he had severe mental problems issue resolved through legal channels. The day the prostitution story broke it also contained the news that the steelers released this guy can't remember his name. The dope in the trunk was from an arrest in Rockwall Texas of Morris who was either off the team at that time or shortly there after. Many of these guys were given a second chance think stonio for example but if unable to get it together they were gone.

The big issue with the guy that tests positive for drugs is the suspension and the accelerated suspension program for these idiots. This guy could end up with a season long suspension prior to his rookie contract being over and that just ruins the value of the pick. He may already have strike one and his next could be his second offense. The next biggest issue is the fact that this stoner knew the test was on the way and still was unable to do with out the drugs. That could indicate a serious dependency issue in spite of the popular claims that the drugs are not addictive. Either of those two issues alone could spell the early end of a football career. There is however a third to consider, and that is the lack of decision making skills and dedication to his craft that is implied by his choice to remain stoned.

The guy maybe gifted with lots of talent but his choices could have him out of the league before the first contract is up, not a good risk.

A team would need to really look into this guys background before taking him over a lesser more reliable player.

I feel like there's no way he drops in our lap at 22. One of the smarter teams picking in the final 10 picks of the draft will weigh the value of a top 5 talent and jump ahead of us. Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle, New England, Denver, Indy and Green Bay will be all over it. Not to mention that several of the teams in the early second round will get curious. My guess is that he falls no later than the Browns pick(via Buffalo). Cleveland needs help everywhere and can leverage one pick into a couple.

Oh, I agree that he would need to be checked out thoroughly before drafting him. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't. Not in the first anyway. The thing is, somebody will. I think the issue with Gregory could push Dupree up in the draft and out of our range and we could be left with a choice between Gregory, a CB or someone like Harold. Hell, with Bell's issue with the ganja still hanging in the air, there's no way I draft a dude with a documented history of failing drug tests.

At this point there is no telling what these guys will draft this year. I would not be any more surprised if they took a great player or pulled off another WTF are they doing pick. I keep wishing for great picks but my other hand is filling up faster, again!

I have never guessed correctly about who they would draft so i don't even try any more. Like most here I think they would be a MUCH better team if they would read my posts and draft my picks.

I agree. This isn't your OLD Steelers anymore. There is no such thing as the Steeler way anymore. The Rooneys have proven that for the bottom dollar they will look the other way. Just like all the other owners.

There never was a "steeler way", outside of the steelers tended to not take free agents that were known trouble. In the past, pre social media, it was just easier to cover things up. talk to older cops that worked Pittsburgh... there were always DUIs and other things the older [players walked on and/or were swept under the rug because frankly few people cared as much to make a big deal about it.

Football players since the 30's had a rep for being big time partiers and generally on the wilder side... there are exceptions, but these are guys who grew up with a free pass and a lot of fame from their local areas and colleges...

I'm not the least bit worried about the moral high ground. Especially when it comes to weed that I think is not as bad as booze. It's just the suspension issue. If that gets cleared up I'm fine. But so will the teams in front of us.

difference between the two is legal vs illegal, third time test positive gone for a year if I remember correctly. 1st offense for bell 2 games, the combine could be 1st offense for this guy, especially if steelers draft him. Another team that I will not mention would likely not have it as an offense if they drafted him.

That's my point. I don't care if he smokes his brains out from a moral perspective. I don't hold weed worse than booze, but if he is on a strike and the league will continue to per sue weed suspensions I don't want him. Period.

On the bright side, if we draft him, when he gets a sack we can steal and modify the soccer chant .... "Hookah Hookah Hey!"

I understand that SBE. You probably could dig up stuff on every team. Now with the internet everyone knows everything. That said there has always been a stigma that Steelers operated at a higher standard than other teams. Whether it was true can be argued of course.
not the ***s. They're squeaky clean.
