Analytics And Jarvis Jones

We haven't really seen enough of Jarvis's potential because if injuries, we'll find out this season. His SEC tape was fine, beat some solid tackles including D.J. Fluker in the SEC Championship game. Heard he had hamstring problems at his pro day which effected his performance so I don't put too much stock into Bleacher Analytics.

Bottom line, he needs to hit the weight room this off season, I think Harrison can be a good influence there. With hard work and effort, and a solid coaching organization like the Steelers with guys like Porter to work with I think he'll develop into a solid NFL pass rusher.

It's always something with Jones. He'll be 26 years old this year. Why didn't he hit the weights last year? He isn't some young kid anymore. His tape was not fine IMHO. He got to the QB by scheme or by the QB just holding the ball too long most of the time.

The age is a problem. Many guys his age are just starting to hit their prime and develop into a star player. At this point, we have no idea what kind of player Jones can be because he can't stay on the field.

last year I mentioned what I saw in training camp... I see him as not putting in 100%

the lack of added muscle would support what I saw

he tweaked his groin, and was milking it on the bench

problem is everyone was standing at that moment and Heyward saw Jarvis loafing off, and tore him a new ******* (voiced his displeasure)

I was just in the right place to see it up close........

some might say it was one moment one incident

but I think it really is the root of his problem

unfocused not giving 100%

I don't label Jarvis a bust yet but this is definitely the make or break year for him and Shamarko. Step up or step out.

You are more first hand knowledge than me. I just know what I saw on tape. I know he hasn't bulked up any since he was drafted. You're explanation that he is lazy maybe why.

Or we have already seen it all. Many of our draft niks on here have called out his flaws before he was even drafted. So far they have been right........ Unfortunately.

Time to employ the buckshot draft technique, use the first round pick to trade back as many times as possible to amass picks and then hope you hit the target with the buckshot...not like we couldn't live without our recent first rounders.

I second this motion. The 1st round of the NFL draft is the most overrated thing in all sports.

The idea of drafting a below average athlete at the most demanding athletic position in the NFL is pure stupidity, thanks Tomlin.

We all thanked Noll when he drafted Huey also. Bad picks happen. Hopefully Tomlin and company hit a few home runs this draft. We need a bunch that is for sure.

You don't run to the podium with 15 minutes on the clock to draft a poor athlete at the most athletic position in the game . We all knew before the draft what ba pitiful athlete Jones was, he was dropping like a rock and yet we ran to the podium like somehow someone was going to steal the POS from us, typical under Tomlin.

I'm not disagreeing. I just said every single coach has or will make a bad pick. Even the great ones have.

The point is Tomlin is picking guys that don';t have the measurables to do the job and picking them early . We are wasting prime picks on guys that have little to no chance to succeed due to their physical or athletic limitations. Picking a guy with all the measurables and him failing is one thing is one thing but picking guys without the measurables and hoping against hope they succeed is both stupid and irrational.

Well my point is every coach will make some bad picks. Tomlin has had his share of late. Hopefully he will get his share of good picks in the next couple of drafts. One can hope anyways right?

I am branded a Tomlin Hater on here and really don't care. But the one thing that looks decent is last years draft so far looks better than many of late and might be showing signs of improvement in this skill set. I do not think they have gotten to the level of great drafts yet but last years (so far) looks a lot better than the others since we might actually have four players worth keeping.

Drafting 4th round talent in the 1st round is never a good idea.

Bottom line is that Jarvis Jones is a very mediocre athlete who has demonstrated a lack of speed, a lack of strength, and a lack of improvement from year to year over the last 4, dating to his 2nd to last season in Georgia. If a 4th or 5th rounder played like he has, the guy would get no playing time and would sit on the Practice Squad. He's getting extra reps because of his draft position, and he was woefully overdrafted. I said it before we drafted him that his similarities to Bruce Davis and Alonzo Jackson are frightening, and their Pro Day/Combines only reinforced that.

At least Jones has done SOMETHING, so that's an improvement.

I'll be pleasantly shocked if he ends up as a marginally productive LB for us outside.

Dittos. As was mentioned earlier, if you pretend that Bell was drafted in the first round and Jones was taken in the second round, then it doesn't feel so bad.

Can we do that with Dri Archer and Bryant too?...

I'd rather we draft a great corner or pass rusher in the first and still take Bell in the second if it is ok.:p

Tombert did think they drafted a pash rusher. That's why we have a problem. Let's see how this year's pass rusher works out. :p
