Veteran combine...

I've always liked Carriker. His career fell short, but I don't see what harm a minimum 1-year contract would do.

Can he be any worse than Joe Kruger, Ethan Hemer or Matt Conrath?

I remember being very disappointed that he was drafted JUST before our pick the year he came out, thought he would be 'Aaron Smith like'.

I read that some of the Eagles brass talked with Carriker some at the vet combine and that he looked real healthy and strong. I know Colbert said they didn't have much interest in the vet combine, but it would be stupid to not at least give him a shot.

This is my feeling exactly. It is not homophobic, but homodisgust. The whole feces aspect is just nasty. Although I would fear a dick in me!!!

The irony of your name and this post is not lost. lol. :D

I thought it would be nice if we ended up with him as well. He is 30 years of age and was out of football last year. He spent lots of time out for tearing a quad. I would be very concerned over his health going forward. Just as injury took Aaron Smith from us it could do the same for this guy. He could still have a year or three left that he can play well but I think that is likely to be his ceiling at this point. His floor could be he goes down on the first play of training camp or the season after being signed and nearly everything he is paid becomes dead money and a cap hit this year and next year. Looks like more Risk than reward.

He will get a 1 yr deal with no guaranteed money. If he gets hurt, then so be it.

I thought that after a certain time period in the NFL your contract was guaranteed.

Not that I know of...

He's thinking of the "Vested Veteran" guarantee. If a player has at least 4 years in the league and is on your roster for the first game of the NFL season his salary for that year becomes fully guaranteed. He can only use this "guarantee" once in his career.

A vested veteran, or a player with at least four years of NFL experience, will have his 2014 base salary guaranteed for the year if he’s on an NFL team’s roster for the first game of the season.

That means that if a team decided after Week 1 to part ways with a veteran player with a 2014 base salary of $1MM, the team would still be on the hook for that full $1MM, which would count against the cap. A veteran who has received this form of termination pay in the past wouldn’t be eligible to receive it again, but otherwise the player can put in a claim for his full salary and receive it. Veterans not a Week 1 roster don’t benefit from that provision, however.

With the level of 'depth' we have now, i would look at Leshoure(RB), Carriker(DE) and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah(CB/S/KR)

Owusu-Ansah has been on a few teams and has returned kicks (some pretty cool vids online from college). He is identical in size, speed and metrics as Trae Waynes except that he is 207#. He ran a 4.33 40 with a 4.19 20yd shuttle and benched 21 reps.
I'm sure there is a reason he isn't on a roster but with his physical abilities, he is worth a shot over the 'smurfs', even if it's only to be a returner and back-up CB/S. He was a smaller college prospect who may have needed more time but I'd let Lake work with him to see if he has anything to offer.

I agree with those 3, especially Carriker. We need DE depth.

as for Michael Sam - with everything going on in San Francisco, it'd look like that would be his best place to secure a spot on roster.

This took a lot of thought. I'm choking w/ laughter!!! Which is NOT what Sam's would be choking on should he land in San Francisco!!!

Outside of the obvious jokes centering on his sexual choices, there is likely some other reason he has not been picked up. Particularly when one considers a team like new england who has had all kinds of media distractions. They have a tight end that is charged with murder, they have been linked to more underhanded activity than the Clintons and nothing seems to stick to their Teflon suit. A team like that would not be worried about controversy and if Sams was worth picking up I would think they would grab him.

From what Ive read, the veteran combine has been a mostly sad affair. Felix Jones running sub 4.7 forties. I don't expect much to materialize from it other than the end of dreams.

I would love to take a look at Carriker if he gets hurt and can't play what's the difference between him and Cam........Not trying to turn this into a Cam slam but I am just saying at least Carriker has potential and Cam don't.

You do have a point. If Carriker could be had for the same money or less than what is do Cam this year it would be a win. If he plays at least he has the potential to be good, if he gets injured and can not he is likely equal to what Cam brings.
