Whats everyones thoughts on drafting a guy to take over return duties?

My thought is that we need to look for a WR somewhere in rounds 4-7 that could be our number 1 return guy plus be the #4 or #5 receiver. Here are a few players to consider, WR's only who should be available round 4 and after:

Ty Montgomery, Standford.
Jamison Crower, Duke.
Steffon Diggs, Maryland.
Kaelin Clay, Utah.

Draft position based on walter footballs round projection.

Definitely in rounds 4 or later. Never as a 3rd round comp pick. Otherwise feelings get hurt.

What if it is so late in the third round that it is, for all practical purposes, a 4th?

Wheaton was doing a pretty good job. I'd like to see him and Dri back on returns.

I thought that experiment already failed

Most people's common sense gets hurt when a team is full of needs draft a 170 lbs. 5'7 RB that has no position in the NFL and was hurt a ton in college. But hey, everybody is screaming because Worilds cost the Steelers at least a comp. pick so I guess they aren't that valuable.. oh wait....

Worilds retiring didn't cost us anything. The best contract he was going to get was free amazon prime account and some taco bell coupons. No comp pick for that contract.

wouldn't it be awesome if the Steelers had a DB that could handle PRs?

I guess that would mean they'd have to be able to catch....

Maybe but it hasn't stopped people from discussing it. There are several in the Worilds threads (before his retirement) that thought he was going to make big money. Remember all the articles claiming he was a top FA? Teams always over pay for FAs.

Like I said, many were talking about how he cost the Steelers a comp. pick. But some how now that Archer is being discussed comp. picks don't mean anything...

Tebow could run kicks back farther that our crew....hire him

I'll personally guarantee he gets out to the 30 every time.

Tyler Lockett K-State, he is an amazing returner and extremely polished route runner. Easily our 4 wr by opening day.

They did his name was Rod Woodson.

Amazing that the Steelers could go almost a generation without a DB cut from a similar cloth.

Most teams don't get HOFers at the same position each decade.

And Hank Poteat, ugh. Used to hate that guy on returns. He shook so much it looked like he was seizing!

Doesn't hurt my sense or feelings. Especially since we did very well in last year's draft. Perhaps if our 3rd round pick hadn't been given away the previous year for Landry Jones, it wouldn't have been that big a deal. The only positive is the browns used that pick for the package to move up and grab Jonny Football. Now talk about return for a draft pick!!!

He would be an awesome pick! but he will be picked in the 2nd or 3rd. I think the earliest PIT takes a wr is 4th or 5th. As a WVU fan I love Mario Alford. He was invited to the combine and I believe ran a 4.4. He could be had in the 6th or 7th.

I like DeAndre Smelter (GT) later, I don't know if he can return but he is an excellent physical receiver, hard worker, and he blocks like Ward (he can be aggressive and vicious when blocking, seems to enjoy the contact blocking offers, very Ward-esque which is probably what drew my affinity for him in the first place) but he's also a good receiver. We shall see who the Steelers like though.

Here is SteelersDepot's scouting report of Smelter

You should definitely only try something once. Nobody ever gets better after their first year.

we've been through this. no steeler has ever failed on their first try if they were ever worth a damn. none.
update your notes and catch up with the rest of the class.

Yes, because that is exactly what people are saying.

I guess you think all players turn out great after a horrible 1st year right? I

We used a 3rd on Dri make him learn and be a regular returner he @ Brown should be the 2 deep KR with Brown asa the PR, if we can make a move dump DHB and sign D.Moore and team him up with Dri as the KR and 4th WR.

Maybe a 7th round pick. You can get a KR/PR as a rookie free agent. I think Wheaton is a good KR man.

Come on....

We all know our 4th round pick this year is going to be a punter.

We were 20th in net punt average and 28th in Inside the 20. Brad Wing is on a year-to-year non-guaranteed contract.

We need an upgrade on SPECIAL TEAMS because it's 1/3rd of the game don't you know!!!

Get'r done Tombert!

But can he return kicks and punts?
