Look at how bad their cap is. Lewis makes 5mil/yr I think. Why not offer a lower draft pick and take Lewis off their hands? We could then sign Graham/Morgan in FA and our team is instantly better.

---The Saints have work to do between now and Tuesday to get themselves under the cap. New Orleans is still about $22 million over the threshold and it seems reluctant to make tough decisions to move on from overpaid veterans

Lewis had one very good year on the Saints. I think he would be our best cornerback, unless Gay has another career year. We just do not have the cap space to make a move for him.

I think we do. Troy's release ( post 6/1) will be to pay the draft class. Restructure Pouncey, which has not been done yet, extend Heyward, extend Ben, cut Cam Thomas. I think we have the $$$$ if we want. It's like a baseball cash dump...offer a 5th rounder.

Lewis carries 6.9M in dead money, with a cap figure of 4.85. A trade would result in the saints adding an additional 2m to their 2015 cap. Does not seem likely that he would be traded.

Simple restructures of Brees, Galette, and Graham get them under the cap.

.

Zack...

I think this could actually be a good move for both teams. Keenan is still only 28.

With the rising cap... his number looks all the better.

Lewis is from NO, he wanted to play there...why would he even consider leaving ?

Not a laughable idea. I do think the Saints would be wise to exhaust pretty much every other avenue available (restructurings, cutting older players etc.) before they would get rid of a starting CB who is not prohibitively expensive. Seems like every team in the NFL needs CBs, not sure we would be the highest bidder in terms of compensation to the Saints (i.e. another team might do something really stupid).

I'd be all for it for a fifth rounder, no doubt.

I like the idea, but this is the problem. Lewis actually seemed DELIGHTED to leave da 'burgh. Never seen anything like it, I was like wtf is wrong with this guy?? He literally pranced outta town...I guess his connection with New Orleans was much greater than his feelings for the Steel City. Anyway, maybe now that he's had a few years back home he'd be open to such a move....I'd do that in a heartbeat....

Lewis got in the dog house early with Tomlin I believe, if you remember him yelling at Mike in a Pre-Season game. He did turn out to be pretty decent, but he really needed to get his head on straight first. I wonder if that rift had anything to do with it?

Joe

I hear you Joe, but I don't think that had any lingering effect. It was all about the NO connection, him and Mike Wallace growing up together....always dreaming of being a Saint. I can respect that. It really burst my bubble though when he waltzed outta town, that was at the point I figured we - finally - had two young corners that'll be starting for the next 8+ years in him and Cortez Allen. I've always been a CB position-fan, constantly dreaming of having two solid CB's, regardless of all the talk about the Steelers being a pressure D, that C+ corners will suffice. Maybe through FA, maybe through the draft, but I really hope we can solidify the position heading into next season.

"fear of being cut"?

****** would just sign a new contract and get a nice signing bonus. ****, ****** may even be hoping to get cut.

Lewis getting traded would actually add 2 million to NO's cap Via advancing 6.9M of dead money into this year. they could trade him after June 1 and save his base amount. Regardless it makes no sense for them to make a move on him right now because it's fiscally upside down.

They do restructures of Brees, Graham and Gallatte(whose contract was structured to be restructured)and they get under the limit.

Bottom line, while a good idea, it would be virtually impossible to score him cheaply at this point

We're 12m under right now, still have other moves to make, restructures and extensions. We're not that bad off.

You'd be pretty happy to leave a place that never even offered you a contract. I know I've read this AT LEAST ten times from Vader alone, and another dozen or so times from other people. Along with plenty of resources to back it up... but maybe some people have trouble reading.

LEWIS WAS NOT OFFERED A CONTRACT FROM THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS!

that is why he left.

Yeah, and I never asked out the homecoming queen.

Why would they offer him a contract if they knew he wouldn't accept it? Clearly, they didn't want to pay him more than NO did and, just as clearly, he wouldn't have accepted less (or the same amount) to stay. by all accounts, he wanted out. Why would they want him to stay, especially, if he was on the outs with the coach?

trading Lewis won't improve their situation. Is the older vets who are killing their cap space

Lewis said he wanted to return, they never offered a contract so when NO DID offer a contract, he took it. Pittsburgh was his first choice. I don't why this is so hard for people to understand. The coaching staff and FO didn't want Lewis, had nothing to do with NO.

So what happened? Well, according to Lewis' Twitter feed, the Steelers didn't offer him a new deal at all—not to begin with, and not after he had been courted by the Saints. It appears that Lewis was never the high-priority re-signing we all thought he was heading into the new league year.

Maybe Lewis has proven he wasn't worth 25+M with 10.5m guaranteed. Especially with our cap situation then. And he's now 28 with a bad knee.

What does his situation NOW have to do with his situation when he left Pittsburgh?

I didn't even talk about the trade proposal in the OP, I merely addressed the wrong assertion that Lewis didn't want to be here to begin with...the one that gets brought up every single time Lewis name pops up on the board.

In this hypothetical situation..it is a TRADE
He has no say in where he goes or where he plays so all this "hometown" stuff is a mooo point, it's like a cow's opinion it doesn't matter...it's mooo

I wouldn't complain if it happened but I'd rather go after B Maxwell or another FA.

Lewis is alright, but I'm of the same opinion. There are guys like Flowers and Culliver out there that I'd like to see the Steelers pursue.

Maxwell will want 8mil/yr. Lewis makes 5 mil/yr, so it's a f'n steal if we could get him. Another poster said it's a bad deal, cap wise for NO, so I guess they wouldn't want to do it.
