LeSean McCoy traded for Kiko Alonso

The point was supposed to be that the RB position is devalued, meaning just plug and play. And yet our offense really didn't start hitting it's full potential until Bell emerged. Too many people are under valuing the RB position, and what a stud RB means to teams. "oh we can find a stud RB in the second round", if it were that easy, there would be more "stud" RB's in the league.

By saying the RB position is devalued, you are saying when Bell's contract is up, we just draft his replacement and let him walk. You are saying that his two game suspension won't be that big of a deal because we can just draft someone that will equal his output for two games.

You mean the New England team that cheats? Or the one that brought back Blount and gave him 30 carries in the game against the Colts? Hardly a valid point using ONE team as the rule and not the exception. You think Green Bay would get rid of Lacy right now? The Colts gave up a first round pick for Richardson, didn't work out for them, but they wanted a legit work horse back to help Luck. What would KC be without Charles? Dallas without a healthy Murray? Even Denver leaned heavily on the running game last year. And lets not forget that the Seahawks identity is run the ball stop the run.

Only team on that list that has won a SB is Seattle. Green Bay beat us without Lacy. They had Starks, not really a great back. I'm not saying it doesn't help to have a good RB, but I don't think the trade was as bad as people make it to be. McCoy is starting the downside of his career and he didn't fit into Kelly's plans.

That's really a hard comp, though. Hell- the Pats 'plug and play' WR's like pocket change. But does that proves that WR's are devalued?

New England has a solid defense and best Coach/QB combo's in the league. They can 'plug and play' SEVERAL positions and still be relatively successful.

So now to evaluate RB's they have to win a Super Bowl... gotcha. McCoy was third in the league in rushing last year, and he was dealing with an OL that was plagued with injuries a lot like the past few years for us. This downside of his career point people keep bringing up is just speculation. He has shown no signs of slowing down, is only one year removed from leading the lead in rushing, averaged over 4 yards per carry last year with said horrible OL, and is only 26 years old.

Fine he doesn't fit into Kelly's plans, but an even swap for a LB who missed his entire second year due to torn ACL? Surely you could have got more for McCoy than that..

We will see what the Eagles get out of the position next year. Do you really think the Bills were the only team he was shopped to? No one wants a RB going into his 7th year making that much money. It's easier to find young guys in the draft. Like Bell and Lacy.
 
With Chip Kelly calling the shots, it would not shock me at all if the Bills were the first and only call. You think it's a coincidence that Alonso came from Oregon?
 
While I dont agree with the deal for the Eagles ...I can see why Kelly moved on from McCoy ...by the end of the season Sproles was the 3rd down/ passing back...Polk was the short yardage goal line back..McCoy was getting paid way too much for doing what he was doing...Kelly didn't trust that McCoy would do what he wanted him to do so why keep him on the team for that cap hit ,if you were going to continue to use him that way..
I would bet it was the Eagles who put out the feelers for interest in McCoy...when you are the one saying I want to move this guy you really aren't dealing from a point of strength when teams respond to your feelers...he knows Alonso ..they had a weakness there..I can see his logic I guess ...I would not have done it ..but I am also not GM & coach of an NFL team..
Its pretty obvious Kelly does what he thinks is right and screw anyone else's thoughts on the matter

Bruce Arians knew that McCoy was available but didn't think he was a good fit for Cardinals.

Who wants a RB with that much mileage who is earning a ton of money in 2015 and will want to re-negotiate his deal in 2016? Money plays a huge part here.

It does and it doesnt.

The Eagles had a ton of cap available already. So essentially they are trading one of their biggest assets on offense for someone coming off a torn ACL. Just to save $$ that the team didnt really need anyway?!


From DJax to McCoy- Chip is clearly trying to clean the slate and build his 'ideal' squad.
 
Lets not forget that Kiko Alonso, during his amazing rookie campaign, played with Marcel Dareus, Mario Williams, and Jerry Hughes in front of him. A pretty beastly line in itself.

Buffalo's defense also went from #10 to #4 with Kiko out of the line up.

Cap room now ALWAYS carries over from year to year, so any waste of cap space matters. Some day when Kelly DOES what to go all-in and try to make a serious run at a championship, that $9 million they are saving this year might matter.

I agree, the Eagles can't continue to just sit on cap room. Eventually they have to spend it. That is part of the interesting thing about this trade. Does Kelly spend it now or later and on whom?

So they can over spend on someone else? At least they will be HIS guys I guess. Not to many cases where a team throws money around and then actually win SB.

Until a team gets into the meat of a franchise QB contract, they will have PLENTY of cap room. It's almost impossible to spend it all without spending foolishly.

The Eagles have tons of holes to fill now and I suspect, if done correctly, they will fill those with mid-range free agents and not blow the whole wad of cash on splash name guys.

They also have long term deals coming for Fletcher Cox, Michael Kendricks and Lane Johnson (which are much more sound investments than WR's and RB's).

I don't know if the Eagles are in for the idea of getting Mariotta or not. It's going to take a lot of draft picks if they do and that might be another reason for keeping a lot of cap room handy (if you can't draft roster players you need to sign them in free agency).

I think the Kelly experiment is looking very long-term. These are not short-term decisions he's making and I think that's a really good thing. Too many teams in this league seem to only care about the upcoming season and shoot way to much of their loads trying to win 8-10 games (does anyone REALLY think Buffalo is going to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender any time in the next three years with Shady McCoy and a combination of EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel at QB?)

All I see is Buffalo wasting a lot money.

Do we have proof of this? The Cardinals also have 13 mil in cap space, does it make since to use almost 12 of that on one player? The Bills had roughly 30 mil in space.
 
When you already have 40 million, I just don't see the point in dumping a talent like McCoy. They dumped DeSean last year, and Maclin was their only WR threat. Their offense struggled. Kelly feels he only needs a QB and OL. He's going to find out that this isn't college, and grabbing a bunch of scrubs isn't going to work week in week out.

Ha. Finally someone brought some reality to the thread. i agree 100%. In 2 years they shed their 3 most talented players. I guess we will see how it plays out for them.
