Lions don't tag Ndamukong Suh

And, no, we do not want him. No need to bring a cancer into the locker room. The guy is a great player but is as dumb as a stump.

He costs you more in penalties and suspensions than he's worth. And his dumb-*** penalties often come at the worst possible time.

We cannot afford expensive free agents, nor do we need to bring in any more idiots. Suh= expensive idiot. Pass all week long and twice on sundays.

This guy could be a great player and possibly go down as one of the all time greats but here we go again. Million dollar talent gift wrapped with a two cent brain. What a waste of talent.

He probably end up a Raider.

I don't see how it's a waste of talent. He may do some dumb things on the field, but hasn't been an issue off the field, and we had our own fine machine in Harrison (warranted or not). Dude is a monster on the field and tough to stop. Just so happens the Packers and Lions rivalry is as heated lately as the Steelers and Ravens. Some pretty heated and crazy things have happened in our games. No I'm not saying we should go after him, we simply can't afford him. But I would EASILY take him on our team, not a waste of talent. Detroit has built that D around him, and they have a pretty solid D. They are taking a huge risk by not tagging him, but with all the restructuring they did with his contract, they simply couldn't afford to tag him.

What we can and can not afford is yet to be seen. Contracts can be restructured slugs can be cut loose and replaced with end of draft free agents, if they suck we will still be where we are with the over priced under performers except for the price. A guy like Suh could be just what the team needs from the free agent market. We still need lots of things on defense cause a lot of what we have is not that good. We could also go for a top drawer corner instead but getting a major improvement some place would be huge for the team.

Couldn't have said it better myself...thanks.

Ben still has his contract extension to be ironed out. We're paying Timmons 7.5m with a cap hit of 12.5m, Brown 6m with a 9.7m cap hit, Pouncey has an 8m cap hit. Troy's situation is still to be determined, currently sits at an 8m cap hit (could save 3.75m by cutting him). That's quite a bit of money tied up with those four players, with Ben still to be signed. You have to look at the long term effects as much as the current ones. Suh will be the highest paid defensive player in the league sometime in March. Put that into perspective, Watt just signed a contract worth 100m over 6 years. Basically QB money (not top tier elite QB money, but still QB money). Suh will get MORE than that. Find a way to fit that under our cap (Watt's cap hit this year is 21m, next two years 12.5m each) AND fill the LOLB spot, AND find a CB, AND find a safety, AND sign a RB, AND sign our draft picks, AND have enough money left over to pick someone up midseason when someone gets injured.

I would LOVE to have Suh, it would make a HUGE difference in our defense. But this isn't the NBA where you can just go over the cap limit and pay a luxury tax. Last year everyone was shocked that we made a splash with the Mitchell signing, and that was a measly 25m over 5 years. It's just not going to happen. Also, there's not top drawer CB on the market this year.

Waste of talent in the sense that he could be so much more and I am referring to his on the field play and not what he does off the field. He does not have to be a dirty player, does not need to take cheap shots, step on QB's legs, just play to your God given talent and the rest will come. This guy has turned into a penalty machine and I don't exactly see Detroit running after him with some ridiculous contract or even placing the Franchise or Transition tag on him. Maybe they know more than the rest of us. Oh he'll get his money, they always due. Just ask Albert Haynesworth and no I'm not comparing the talents of these two just the fact that Fat Albert got his money then loo what happened.

Suh it has always seemed to me was never a hard worker and completely dedicated because if he was, he would be lights out and a cut above everyone else. He's a menace on the field but could be so much better with some hard work, dedication and attitude adjustment.

Don't worry, he has as much chance of wearing a Steeler uniform as you and I do on Sundays.

Yes the Steelers wouldn't go after Suh.

But in this fantasy if they did?

He would make a mediocre secondary at best look instantaneously better.

The way Mitchell did playing behind Carolina's solid D-line play.

They didn't franchise him because of the cost. Because they restructured his contract several times, and pushed money forward (like we tend to do), it pushed the franchise tag cost WAY up. It would have cost them 26m in cap space for this year, there was no guarantee he would sign a long term deal after signing the tag offer either. There are other players the lions need to lock up and replace as well, and they already have large contracts in Johnson and Stafford. Tagging Suh would have made it impossible to field a competitive team this year. They took a chance, they are still working on trying to sign him long term, so there is nothing that "they know more than the rest of us". They still have plans to continue building their D around him, they've been talking about trying to sign him long term for the past season and a half.

And this penalty machine is just media hype over the few plays that caused a stir. He had 7 accepted penalties last season, only two personal fouls (one facemask, one roughing the passer). For reference, Watt had 8 penalties accepted, 3 roughing the passers, 2 roughing the kicker and he's looked at as a clean defensive player.

Suh may lose his head occasionally during a heated game, he plays in the trenches where some unsavory things can happen (lets not forget our own Cody Wallace move during a Ravens game), but he's far from a penalty machine. He gets a bad rep for being a dirty player because of the media. The same way Harrison is labeled dirty.

I know, right....

How much is he asking?

We don't know yet. He's one of the best at his position though, so it will be a lot.

Sign him on Madden if you want to fantasize. This board is for actual football talk. Let's talk about players the Steelers could actually sign or where Suh might actually end up.

And I don't know about Suh getting a bad rap. The tape doesn't lie and there are quite a few incidents on tape of him purposefully trying to injure his opponent. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't want Suh on my team, but it certainly enters into the equation that Suh will - in all likelihood - miss a game here and there because of a suspension.

When I say he gets a bad rep, it's simply that people see these incidences where the media is ALL over them. He gets labeled dirty, and then people assume that he commits penalty after penalty after penalty. And that simply isn't the case. He kept his nose pretty clean this last year, and even had his suspension over turned. If you watch the tape of the Rodgers step, he doesn't look down to see where Rodgers is, in fact it's pretty obvious he has no idea where he is, takes a step back that happens to be on Rodgers leg and doesn't immediately jump off. I'm not saying that he was right, but I'm saying it's not like he looked for Rodgers and stomped him out like it was made out to be. Everything that he does is put under a microscope and dissected a hundred different ways. He has earned some of it, the rest is just the media overhyping matters like they always do.

And then you get fans that buy into that hype and say some pretty unfounded things because of the media perception. It's no different than how the media drug Bens name through the mud when there was no evidence in either case against him. Yet that is something that follows him around constantly.

I don't really disagree in general. Although it seemed pretty obvious to me that Suh stepped on Rodgers on purpose --- just shows that two people can watch the same thing and come to very different conclusions.

I don't think he stepped on him on purpose, but I think he stood there once he realized he was on his leg on purpose. Like I said, unless he has eyes in the back of his head, he never saw where Rodgers was.

Imagine Suh on one end, Hayward on the other..........McClendon/McCullers at NG.....that front line opens up things so much for our LBs that they couldnt help but make more plays with pressure...its the lack of pass rush/pressure that caused our bottom half ranking vs the Pass. Signing Suh and adding a decent CB, i think, would catapult this defense back into a top level unit. it wont happen but if it did..............CONTENDER !!! NO QUESTION !!! He could make that much of a difference.

You're completely forgetting about Tuitt.

Personally, IF we had Suh, I'd play him at nose. That puts our best three players on the line. Or consider a switch to 4-3 base. I don't take Tuitt off the field for the Mac brothers.

Id be somewhat comfortable with a defense that trotted out Suh, McClendon, Heyward, Timmons, Shazier, Silverback, Moats (or a FA pickup), McCain, Mitchell, Troy and Gay (who has come into his own).........1/3 of that unit is Pro Bowl caliber(Suh, Heyward, Timmons and Gay)

I do feel we really need to figure out what we have (if anything in Jarvis). IMO we can draft and take chances on a few young pieces and wait for them to develop and mesh..OR, we can gamble for the PRESENT, sign Suh and give Ben 3-5 more years to make runs at another title. I am NOT opposed to the latter. Im willing to deal with the fines and penalties (that accompany Suh) occasionally. Hes an imposing force that requires a double team. If it costs us Troy (gettin cut) im still okay with that. But its a move we should strong consider because we arent gonna find anyone near his talent these next few drafts.

Well the Steelers seem to be trying to free up some cap space for someone they want to sign, whether it's going to be enough for Suh I don't know, but they'd need a few more cuts imo. May get interesting. Troy is already being asked to retire by the Rooney's, whether he do or not can factor in as Well.
