Steelers restructure Marcus Gilbert's deal, create $3.7M in cap room.

The Pittsburgh Steelers created some breathing room under the salary cap by restructuring offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert's deal, ESPN's Field Yates reports.

The move creates $3.724 million in cap space for 2015, according to Yates.

Gilbert won't have to give up any money; he simply converted a roster bonus and $1.15 million of his salary into a signing bonus, pushing the cap hit to a future year.

Making moves to free up more $ for the Big Ben's extension?

You don't need room for Roethlisberger's contract extension. A new contract will LOWER his current projected salary cap allocation.

You do need to free up room to assign the transition/franchise tag to Jason Worilds however.....

There is nothing "cooperative" about taking most of your yearly salary in a big, lump sum payment 6 months before you were meant to get it. These renegotiations are just awesome cash influxes for the players. The smart ones makes a little more by investing earlier, the stupid ones throw a big party or go buy a new car....

-I would look at Graham and Brooks Reed. Sign those two, then draft db's in rd 1 and maybe rd 2. Problem solved.

Who has the latest in terms of our salary cap situation? I'd like to see where things stand post-Gilber restructure and assuming things like cutting Lance Moore, Cam Thomas and Keisel. Then of course there is Troy's retirement or even cutting him with the post-June 1 designation.

from what I heard on the talk shows here(grain of salt), Cam Thomas and Lance Moore will be cut to make more room under the cap. Worilds will not be re-signed, as well as Ike and Troy.

The team is definitely at a reckoning point - the loss of Worilds, Keisel, Ike and Troy will hurt - at first, but, we knew they couldn't play forever at a Pro Bowl level...if those moves happen, there should be enough money to make some waves in few agency, no???

It will take time for Gilbert to become very good, coming out of Florida he was seen as mauler at 6"6 330, but after last year after MT @ the RB coach were very unhappy with the Ol coach and stripped him of his power and we hired Munchek, Gilbert was told of a full transition to a zone OL scheme, and told to shed weight, he came into camp with less bulkier arms and looked this year like he was about 320, probably the same as Adams but Gilbert has much stronger knees which make him a better run blocker.
Everyone ******* about his extension but the cash he got is average OT cash.

This free up of 3.724+ hopefully Troy retiring($3.075)+ releasing Moore 1.5+ releasing Cam Thomas 1.5 mill (aprox)
= 9.8 free's up cap room a Ben extension of 6 years 100-110 25 million guaranteed will free up more money, and I think they lock up Heyward eithier right before the season or before he hits the market.

With how many OLB's are in the draft and how many performed at the combine, and with after Waynes no CB looks like a instant starter we are better off not tagging or working a 6-8 mill extension on Worlids rather use that money to Anti up on Maxwell 6 years 40 million 10 mill SB, and then I approach the draft like this

2 CB Collins/Carter/Olumu
3 S Holliman
4 DT
5 LG
6 DE
6 WR
7 BPA

We could also extend Cam Heyward and drop his cap hit. Damn, we could have money to sign a FA LB (Not stupid Worlds, maybe Graham) and look at croners. What about bringing in a guy like Michael Roos? He is coming off an injury, could be cheap, and knows Munchak well. Jordan Cameron?

so they see Mitchell as a long term solution to FS, this is ... intriguing.
The good thing about his contract was that after the second year it wouldn't cost much to get rid of him if he sucked, now we have to keep him. Just like Gilbert's case.

I don't see them adding to both OLB and CB via free agency. It would be just too out of character for them to win two bidding wars at premium positions. Remember, even though we might have a lot of cap space for us, there are **** teams like the Browns and Jags with massive amounts of cap space that they are forced to use (per the new CBA which has hard minimums). How do we come close to matching what those teams can offer?

More likely to see one big move (like Mitchell last year) along with an assortment of small moves (bringing back Moats, McCain, DHB, Spaeth, a cheap backup RB who plays special teams like Roy Helu, depth at DE).

Meh, I'd go up to $6.5m/year. I'd even go higher if everything above that was incentive based such that it wasn't automatically included part of the salary cap. if I understand correctly, some incentive items are considered "likely" or somesuch terminology and get included in the salary cap. For instance, you couldn't give Ben and incentive that he throws for 1,000 or more yards in the year and expect that to not be included in the salary cap.

I've got no problem paying someone and ungodly salary if he got 20 sacks in a year. Next year when he only got 10, I'd be covered.

Report: Steelers restructure Mike Mitchell's contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly restructured safety Mike Mitchell's contract, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Earlier Wednesday, the Steelers restructured right tackle Marcus Gilbert's contract.

Pittsburgh has generated $6.2 million in salary cap savings, according to Bouchette.

Mitchell signed a five-year, $25-million contract last March. In his first campaign with the Steelers, he recorded 71 tackles and two forced fumbles in 16 games.

I'd heard that mitchell had been playing hurt at the end of the season. I truely hope that was the case as he looked like he had to poop all the time. ****** play. I wish we didn't have to restructure all the time, that's what keeps us in cap hell. Average players, future salory.
