How dumb is Colbert really ?

Who hated Lewis?

All the people that argued that Allen would be better and those who bitched because it took Lewis too long to break the starting lineup. I remember several on here that bitched because he was a "cancer" and they blamed him for some **** that came out of the locker room.

Pretty strange argument. Everyone here hated Wallace and called him a cancer. Urbik is the worst OL on a bad Bills OL. He has been benched off and on his entire time in Buffalo. And that is with an OL so bad they've already signed Incognito. Their OL is a disaster and Urbik is part of their poor play. Lewis was hated on here as well. Even the guys that drafted him didn't want him back. They never offered him a contract and just let him walk.

Point being that by last year no one from two consecutive drafts was left on the team, only three were still in the NFL, and one of those isn't very good.

He had a pretty good track record in the first round when Cowher was here: Plax, Hampton, Simmons, Polamalu, Roethlisberger, Miller, Holmes. 18 Pro Bowl Season, 446 Career AV and 758 Career Games Started (for 7 players).

To me it's always been a philosophical issue with Colbert as the draft gets into the mid-to-late rounds. The two biggest disappointments in his early 1st round drafting are the WR's and I just don't value them as 1st round picks. History has proven that correct.

To me he drafts too many prospects that don't have the basic physical traits to develop into NFL-level contributors.

He has admitted that after the 4th round, he almost shuts down and looks only for "special teams contributors".

He has drafted FIVE mid-round QB's as developmental prospects and not ONE developed even enough to be a backup QB here.

He drafted a punter in round 4.

He does a bad job at offensive line evaluation and unless a prospect practically drops into his lap (Pouncey, DeCastro) there aren't many plus O-line draft selections in his history (Willie Colon was good but arguably forced into a wrong position).

Not consistent enough in his philosophy of late. What exactly IS a Steeler's linebacker these days? The underathetic Jones? The overathletic Shazier? The edge development guy in Worilds? The traditional big guy in Woodley? One year speed is everything, the next it's completely overlooked as part of the evaluation (Shazier vs. Jones). One year we care about off-field issues (passing on Carl Nicks for example) and the next we overlook it (Rainey/signing Blount).

Too many frivolous picks on hood ornaments to "fix" special teams which statistically are not nearly as important as the media and coaches make it out to be. Willie Reid, Daniel Sepulveda and the Rainey/Archer selections were all touted as primarily "special teams fixers" and none had tangible impact on wins/losses. Not even close (we ended up winning the Super Bowl after Sepulveda got HURT!!!).

In my opinion, Colbert basically throws away 1 in 5 or 6 draft picks just on common sense, philosophical issues that should EASILY be corrected based on history alone, yet he doesn't learn and continues to make the same mistakes again and again.

I have a hard time accepting that type of job performance and have stated numerous times I would have fired Colbert last off-season after our second 8-8 season. It didn't happen and the 11-5 season with an easy schedule probably bought Tombert a few more seasons.

when /where colbert say that ? (that he draft specila teamer in late rounds ) just asking i don't like colbert too

That's revisionist theory. Most were just gutted that we couldn't afford him but were hopeful that Allen would work out. I can't remember anyone wanting Lewis gone.

It's not revisionist history because it was written on here at the time. People bitched because a story leaked out that he wasn't popular in the locker room. I don't remember anyone being gutted that he left. People also bitched because it took him until his last year to do anything. Some thought he was a one year wonder and didn't want to spend the money on him.

Yep...Mostly people ***** about our FO for letting him go after Allen didn't work out. There wasn't much love for him to be resigned until after the fact. Then it was just another horrible decision by Tombert for letting him go.

Another knock on Lewis was that even though he had a solid year, he had no interceptions. By contrast, in limited time, Allen had two interceptions as well as three forced fumbles. He was taller and faster and looked well on his way to locking down a starting spot the next year.

I didnt hate the Allen signing though I found it higher than expected. Actually I think we could have kept both if we didn't waste money on some dumb moves

Do you think Tomlin is an idiot for praising Jason Worilds after the season and saying his arrow is pointing up, even though he's a free agent?

Yeah... we have maybe 20% of the information. Maybe the Steelers have NO intention of re-signing Worilds. If so, Tomlin's comment make perfect sense! "This guy is FANTASTIC, I sure wish we could afford him!" Wink, wink. (Maybe someone else will overpay instead of US for a change!)

.

Colbert is so dumb that it took him two hours to watch 60 Minutes!

Answer to the original question

As much as I want to put it all on Colbert I think most of the problems with the draft and the cap is with Tomlin and the coaches. Colbert probably stays too out of the way of the coaches. Cowher seems to always get the kind if guys he wanted and i think its been the same with Tomlin and lebeau. We seem to lack an identity such as "smashmouth"or "blitzburgh" as the old cowher players leave one after another. We need some real play makers and difference makers and an identity on defense and Tomlin doesn't seem to understand that they don't magically appear. Thinking jones will magically become a monster like harrison this season is going to be a real problem for this team.

LOL.....finally some new material for everyone to play with. Great post. Never heard any of it before. Do you have anything else? Do we need a fat back maybe?

I think we need "Bud" Dupree lining up on them strong side after watching him at the combine. Whoa that dude would look pretty cool in the black and gold gooooosteeelllerrrrssss!

That's why I usually use the "Tombert" term. Clearly there was a change in draft strategy when Tomlin came on board. It hasn't worked IMHO. Tomlin is just as at fault as Colbert.

I like this guy also....he just seems like he fits the mold. Big, strong, athletic. I really hope we dont draft a corner in round 1 and address that need through free agency (Blake, McCain, and maybe another veteran).

I've always said that either Tomlin's input on the draft isn't so good or you have to believe that Colbert became retarded overnight in 2007.

We obviously have very different memories then. If anything we were just gutted that we couldn't afford him. If there was anything about the unpopular side it was that his buddy from Louisiana wasn't going to be paid by the Steelers and he didn't expect to be either. I don't remember a thing about him being unpopular in the locker room.

Maybe this will jog your memory?

A bad night Sunday got worse for cornerback Keenan Lewis as the Steelers filed into the visiting locker room at Invesco Field following a 34-17 loss to the Broncos.

Lewis, who got benched in the second quarter after picking up two personal foul penalties, punched a sign that was encased in glass. The glass shattered and many of the players had to walk by a guard telling them to watch their step — and Tomlin making it very clear why there was broken glass outside of the Steelers' locker room.

"That's what you call young and dumb right there," Tomlin said to the players that passed him. "Watch your step. No. (23) is playing bad and doing stupid stuff as well."

Lewis started at the cornerback spot opposite Ike Taylor in place of Bryant McFadden, who didn't play because of an arm injury.

Lewis, who appeared to be pushing McFadden for the starting job gave up an 18-yard catch to Eddie Royal on the second play of the game and then tackled the Broncos wide receiver out of bounds.

"The first (unnecessary roughness penalty) I didn't know he was out of bounds," Lewis said. "The second one, that was my fault."

Lewis got flagged in the second quarter for unnecessary roughness after tackling Bronces wide receiver Brandon Lloyd.

Gay promptly replaced Lewis at cornerback, and after the game Tomlin said of the latter, "He stunk it up."

The 6-foot, 208-pounder Lewis didn't do anything to help himself after the game as Tomlin was livid when he saw the broken glass outside of the Steelers' locker room.

Lewis said he meant to punch the wall, not the sign.

"He had a tough night," said Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, who is Lewis' best friend. "That's why I told him we have next week. Shake it off, bounce back. We all make mistakes. Hopefully he can get back to the Keenan I know."

This goes back to how stupid is Colbert. We let go of guys like Wallace Lewis hood and even though we don't hugely miss those guys we probably were a playoff team with them in '12 and '13. There is nothing he could have done different though maybe cut the old guys kept them the young ones but it's apples vs organges. But I do think it goes to why our drafts are stinking and why we keep the old dudes, Tomlin and the coaches are doing a ****** job and have too much say. The offensive tackle from Ohio state if you can call him that was just a horrible pick from day one and so was the jones pick. Someone's head should roll just for those picks alone.

With the salary cap you can't keep everyone and history has shown that AB was the better keep than Wallace but that was only because he was looking for that big FA money and wouldn't talk to them.

If Keenan Lewis would have taken Cortez Allen money then we made a really ****** decision letting him walk. Lewis was the better of the 2 DBs. Think the FO didn't expect him to go and when he did they thought Allen would be able to step up, which hasn't happened yet. Now we're stuck with a hole. Sometimes you roll ******* snake eyes when you gamble.

The issue with Lewis was this: he didn't do enough to warrant an extension prior to his contract year. Then he had his breakout season and was staring free agency in the face. We had to make a lots of moves that Feb/March just to get under the salary cap. Tombert didn't think we had a chance to match what the open market would pay Lewis so they re-acquired Willie Gay and thought they would be fine with Ike, Cortez & Gay. It really sucks to lose a young player at a premium position who took up a spot for 3 seasons while contributing next to nothing and then suddenly breaks out. In hindsight, you have to look at the mistakes that were made in managing the salary cap --- that offseason we had very little flexibility --- but there was also the element of bad luck and/or bad coaching involved since it took so long the light to go on with Lewis.

SteelewrAl, I agree, but on the other hand, Colbert contributed very heavily into wh we had Cap problems. He continually does near te same even today. Other teams seem to find ways to manage the cap. Either Tombert or Kahn aren't getting it right. We are always against the cap, with stupid reasoning. Luck has some to do with it, but luck hasn't keept the worst OL unit for the last ten years, Luck hasn't kept veterans past the expiration date, Luck hasn't continually caused us to miss in the draft, GET my point?

Salute the nation

For all the bitching we do about Jarvis, take a look at the guys drafted ahead of him:

1 Kansas City Chiefs Eric Fisher OT Central Michigan
2 Jacksonville Jaguars Luke Joeckel OT Texas A&M
3 Miami Dolphins Dion Jordan DE Oregon
4 Philadelphia Eagles Lane Johnson OT Oklahoma
5 Detroit Lions Ezekiel Ansah DE Brigham Young
6 Cleveland Browns Barkevious Mingo OLB LSU
7 Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Cooper OG North Carolina
8 St. Louis Rams Tavon Austin WR West Virginia
9 New York Jets Dee Milliner CB Alabama
10 Tennessee Titans Chance Warmack OG Alabama
11 San Diego Chargers D.J. Fluker OT Alabama
12 Oakland Raiders D.J. Hayden CB Houston
13 New York Jets Sheldon Richardson DE Missouri
14 Carolina Panthers Star Lotulelei DT Utah
15 New Orleans Saints Kenny Vaccaro SS Texas
16 Buffalo Bills EJ Manuel QB Florida State

We spend so much time analyzing prospects, sometimes it pays to take a break and realize that - in certain years - half of the top 16 picks can be complete turds.

how dumb is Colbert? Dumb enough to have what I assume would be his dream job for 15 years and counting.
