I'd even look at James out of Penn State. Good hands. Strong - put up 26 reps. He needs some work on blocking but with his strength he should be OK. Plus, he will sit behind Heath for a year. They can probably get him in the 4th or 5th round.

Didn't see another Combine thread and I didn't want to start a new one just for this but I am watching the O Linemen work out. The definite story of the day is the kid named Ali Marpet. He is a D-III player from Hobart College. Talk about a long shot and every time he does a drill, Mike Mayock is falling all over himself saying how awesome he looks and how fantastic his technique is. He also mentioned that he played in the Senior Bowl against the D-I guys and gave them all they could handle. Said he is going to catch the attention of a lot of teams. Very cool underdog story.

I personally don't want James. For a guy as big and strong as he is he has no football skillset. Can't block, brick hands, I see no potential as an NFL player. Nick O'Leary is a great football player but he will be limited by his size and physical downfalls. Too bad they couldn't switch bodies and O'Leary would be a perfect TE.

Can he jump out of a pool?

LOL ... remember when Ziggy Hood was gonna be an ALL-PRO after this video hit the internet? (NOT saying YOU said that; just that some swore it). Point being that looking good in shorts is not a good predictor of how they will play on the field. Yet year after year, people (including myself) get sucked in by 40 times, bench press etc. numbers.

this is what Vader is referring to

I remember watching a video of a prospect doing that ... don't remember it being this one. But yeah, I knew what he was talking about.

Not sure where you get that on James. He has demonstrated great hands in college and was a very good receiver.

O'Leary just ran 4.93
James 4.83
Maxx Williams 4.77

Slow times for these three. Williams is not that tall or strong. He needed a better time. 4.77 is just okay.

I'd still take O'Leary over James - better all around TE, IMO...so what if he's slow and short. He plays bigger and faster...

Yeah, I figured James would be a riser with his physical tools and O'Leary and Williams would fall because neither are that athletic. I would take Williams in round 2-3 without a question and I would take O'Leary in round 5. I feel Williams is a starter in year 2-3 and O'Leary has a shot to start or being a very good back up. James I don't think makes a 53 man roster.

Damn 37.5" vertical for James too. If anyone is helping himself in the combine, it's him. I agree that he's not a blocker but he has good hands, I think he has the record for TD catches for a TE at PSU

11 touchdowns in three seasons, so if he does have the record, not particularly impressive. Overall, not a talented group of tight ends this year.

Its unfortunate Ziggy's hardwork didnt translate to the field. He was obviously working hard and trying to improve as a player. Wish him the best in his future.

Is Blanchflower still on the practice squad? Any chance he might contribute something?

I really like Maxx Williams. He has big soft hands and runs very nice routes. He isn't going to be a dominant blocker but he could be that pass catching TE to replace Miller eventually.

Blanchflower is listed as still a member of the Steelers roster under the reserve/futures contracts. I thought I had read that they liked his progress on the practice squad during the season, but a Google search of his name did not bring up an article.

I like what I saw from Maxx yesterday too...

Kevin White just made a statement as the best WR at the combine. Amazing 40 times for a WR his size...4.3!!!

I notice there is no "Head Size" on the spreadsheet.

Very astute of you. Actually they do measure heads size in the NFL... For helmets :)
