How dumb is Colbert really ?

I don't know, because I'm a fan not a personnel guru but there a signs being sprinkled on my cheerios every now and then that either him or Omar is seriously deficient. TMC wasn't a fan, as I recall and the trail of question marks is there for sure. Max Starks, Tri 'what's his Name, now Jason Worilds all questions of note. Then I see an article that quotes him as saying this about Ben's contract negotiations...

"Gentlemen, now that you have publicly established that Ben is a franchise quarterback whose best is yet to come, that you can't imagine him not finishing his career in Pittsburgh and that he compares favorably with a pair of all-time greats, let's talk money!"

I haven't had to negotiate anything more serious than a traffic jam for a long time but I do know this sounds like he's saying..".Name your price there Ben, we luv ya boy.".

Or am I just overreacting again, damn I hate when I do that.

That sort of thing can lead to the other side deciding to leave a little bit (just a little bit, nothing more than that) of money on the table rather than negotiating for every last cent. What did you want Colbert to say, something like: "Ben hasn't won a playoff game in 4 years so if he doesn't meet our price, we'll just let him play out his final year and then slap his *** with the franchise tag."

Colbert is sending a message to Ben: "You are going to get seriously paid, big guy. Could you do us a favor and tell your agent to beat us with just a basement bat instead of a machete?"

I don't know Al, I think the answer is somewhat less personal and more factual. Something like;

"Ben is a valuable part of this team and we will do everything in our power to see that he remains that way far into the future".

Where is TMC these days? Colbert is okay. He needs to do better in rounds two and three, but every now and then hits a home run in the later rounds ( Bryant, and Brown )

Tomlin can be a wordsmith, but praising Worilds who under preformed relative to his cap number...no need to stroke a man on his way out.

If he came out and praised his top draft target, I'd have a problem. I don't put too much stock in these comments when it comes to a contract, just some good PR for the team and the player.

He had a pretty good track record in the first round when Cowher was here: Plax, Hampton, Simmons, Polamalu, Roethlisberger, Miller, Holmes. 18 Pro Bowl Season, 446 Career AV and 758 Career Games Started (for 7 players).

To me it's always been a philosophical issue with Colbert as the draft gets into the mid-to-late rounds. The two biggest disappointments in his early 1st round drafting are the WR's and I just don't value them as 1st round picks. History has proven that correct.

To me he drafts too many prospects that don't have the basic physical traits to develop into NFL-level contributors.

He has admitted that after the 4th round, he almost shuts down and looks only for "special teams contributors".

He has drafted FIVE mid-round QB's as developmental prospects and not ONE developed even enough to be a backup QB here.

He drafted a punter in round 4.

He does a bad job at offensive line evaluation and unless a prospect practically drops into his lap (Pouncey, DeCastro) there aren't many plus O-line draft selections in his history (Willie Colon was good but arguably forced into a wrong position).

Not consistent enough in his philosophy of late. What exactly IS a Steeler's linebacker these days? The underathetic Jones? The overathletic Shazier? The edge development guy in Worilds? The traditional big guy in Woodley? One year speed is everything, the next it's completely overlooked as part of the evaluation (Shazier vs. Jones). One year we care about off-field issues (passing on Carl Nicks for example) and the next we overlook it (Rainey/signing Blount).

Too many frivolous picks on hood ornaments to "fix" special teams which statistically are not nearly as important as the media and coaches make it out to be. Willie Reid, Daniel Sepulveda and the Rainey/Archer selections were all touted as primarily "special teams fixers" and none had tangible impact on wins/losses. Not even close (we ended up winning the Super Bowl after Sepulveda got HURT!!!).

In my opinion, Colbert basically throws away 1 in 5 or 6 draft picks just on common sense, philosophical issues that should EASILY be corrected based on history alone, yet he doesn't learn and continues to make the same mistakes again and again.

I have a hard time accepting that type of job performance and have stated numerous times I would have fired Colbert last off-season after our second 8-8 season. It didn't happen and the 11-5 season with an easy schedule probably bought Tombert a few more seasons.

Very Good. To add bit, Colbet's cap management in free agency in terms of who to sign, and how much to give each player has been questionable. While Colon was a good pick for the 4th round, we re-signed him to 6+ million a year. He was flag prone. Had we let Colon walk, we could have kept, say K. Lewis at cornerback. Giving Kemo a new deal at guard was silly. Heck, if we kept Craig Urbik ( Started 4 years in Bufflalo ) we would have saved a bundle, and pretty much had the same level of play.

Another dumb move was matching for Sanders. We should have taken NE's 3rd round pick. Giving Worilds franchise tag money? Bad move. I'd give him a few million less, than take the 3rd round comp pick. Worilds will likely leave this year. Why is Colbert still here?. TWO WORDS. BEN ROETHLISBERGER. He fell to us in the best QB draft in the past 15 years.. A franchise Qb can save a coaches or Gm's rear end.

He had a few good years in Buffalo, then an issue with the new coach. Colon was very flag prone, and poor in pass protection. I'd say Urbik was on par with Colon, and would have cost us 5 million less a year.

I find it amusing the armchair GMs want to criticize everything. Only 1 team wins it all every year. Even then we have the disgruntled who want to fire the coach or give credit elsewhere. This team's roster is almost fully turned over since our last SB appearance. We are still in transition. Hopefully they add the pieces we need to get back to a SB before Ben is done.

Right, because it takes some cosmic wisdom beyond the realm of the common schmoe to scout football players and serve in a managerial role. Every G.M. in the NFL was literally born with the instincts needes for their jobs. Colbert your uncle or something?

Pretty strange argument. Everyone here hated Wallace and called him a cancer. Urbik is the worst OL on a bad Bills OL. He has been benched off and on his entire time in Buffalo. And that is with an OL so bad they've already signed Incognito. Their OL is a disaster and Urbik is part of their poor play. Lewis was hated on here as well. Even the guys that drafted him didn't want him back. They never offered him a contract and just let him walk.
