Trouble in PARADISE........................................... Mitch or Mason ?

So it is now basically Pickett vs Mason for the number one spot.
God, I hope not. Heard enough of that bullshlt from a certain somebody last year.

White makes that contested catch and it’s 2-4-40 yards.
and if he throws that ball to CAIII who was actually open he'd have had an even nicer stat. We can sit here and IF, IF, IF all we like but that was a **** decision, a **** throw, and a **** attempt at catching the ball.

Yes SIR, we can “What If” all day long but it don’t mean Jack ****. The “What If” is usually attached to bad things happened but the author wants to change it to not so bad.

Here is what happened people. Mitch signed his original contract with clear starter potential money. It would have been fairly expensive to just cut him and you still need a backup. Mitch knew there wasn't going to be a starter opportunity so they met in the middle on good backup coin. It's 6 million to cut mitch this year, 4 next and 2 after that. The reports from camp I've read have been good. I believe it even says that in the article on the OP. He threw 4 passes. One was a misscommunication and it's only 50 percent possibility that it was his fault and not receiver. One was the same 50-50 deep ball they threw all year last year and the receiver touched the ball first. Another was a third down completion on a well placed ball to Heyward I believe that set up McFarland TD run. 4th I do not recall.
Rudy was Rudy with the exception of hitting CA3 in stride 2 yards open and a long third down run vs. Scrubs.
Only way this becomes a real issue is if KP is hurt and Mitch is long term ineffective or hurt. They are not going to unseat a backup with a big price tag for a not good 4 pass performance. Grow up. If KP had a **** night is Rudy now the starter?????

So it is now basically Pickett vs Mason for the number one spot. With Tribisky trailing way behind as the third QB and possibly could be fighting Morgan for a PS spot. Amazing how the first preseason game can shake things up.....now lets talk about Harris vs Warren....throw that Bell guy......hmmmmm. 🤪
Lol. No one in their right minds is saying that. Pickett is and should be at this point the clear number one. This is simply a preseason boredom argument over the 2 and 3 slots and who should be which. Hopefully it is entirely irrelevant aside from keel downs or mop up time when we blow people out.

Oh thank you. We have been going around about Mitch and Rudy for what three days using cherry picked numbers and metrics (admittedly on both sides) but those do not apply to KP apparently. Cause I could look at raw stats and make a strong case for Mitch and KP being very equal last year. But that is ridiculous because there is something called watching and feel. It's not just fantasy football. Which is why KP is one, Trubu is 2 and Rudy is 3.

Man, who pissed in your poutine? I haven't really used much for metrics at all. I am basing this on my opinion only, as a former coach, player and game scout. I have also prefaced my opinions as being based on the offensive line being improved. I personally for variety of reasons prefer Mason as a passer over Mitch. I have said repeatedly that I only prefer Mason over Mitch assuming the line is better. If the line is porous Mason would get killed. Kenny has in his progression as a player shown to have some of the better traits of both. Mitch's maneuverability and Masons willingness to make the throw. Hopefully that progression continues.

At no point have you seen me simply quote fantasy football numbers as an argument. In my opinion it is only Mason's slower reactions laterally in the pocket that have limited him. Mitch has all the tools but not the head for the game seemingly. Both are fine as backups.

Put Rudy back under C against an NFL defense inseason where his immobility and lack of tight windows throwing inability and you would see how much less. The only thing I feel the guy has going for him is his ability to push the ball down the field. I feel any significant time frame on the field you would clearly see the difference. For our team I hope we don't get to test either of our opinions...

Not sure what you saw. I saw Mason Rudolph make a nice run. Im saying i think mason is better than trubisky, especially for a back up. And especiallly for the price.

I am talking in general as a whole body of work. Not the last preseason game. See we can't throw money in the equation. It should be who is the best next man up. I think that is Mitch with his whole body of work. I get Rudy has his supporters , I just don't get how they think he is a better option over Mitch. I am not saying I think highly of MT , just feel he will lead the Steelers to more clutch wins than Rudy.

Both of them suck. But I guess if they didn't, they'd be starting somewhere. Either one might be able to keep the season afloat for 3-4 games, with 1 or 2 wins. That's all you can ask for

Here is the stats from last year's preseason

Rudy was clearly the worst of the three.

And I am sure those closed door practices leaned the same way. Because the Steelers view Mitch as the better option. It is why he wasn't jettisoned, it is why he is number 2 in the pecking order.

Here is the other piece. Whatever you think about it the Steelers were and are somewhat married to Mitch no matter what you think. You have to consider the price of rice with him. His dead cap cost was probably more than half the entire qb. room put together this season. So we can go round and round. You are free to believe Rudy is better. Clearly I do not. But neither really matters. Mitch is qb 2. And I agree hopefully we don't need to find out. If Rudy plays really well this pre season, is good with KP and the cap savings make sense next year. Maybe.

I dunno they extended him with the intent for Mitch to hang around. I don't see them moving on next year.

When Rudy was waived and no-one bit, that should tell you what the NFL scouts think of Rudy. Mitch got a bad rep last year. No QB would have done well w/ that garbage offense we were employing early. When Kenny went down Mitch came in and won a game if I remember right. You cant say Rudy or Mitch is better based on limited snaps in the first pre-season game. I think Mitch is more mobile and a stronger arm than Rudy. Mitch has shown he can be exceptional even if its in small spurts. He went on an absolute terror w/ a very bad bears team for a few games. Rudy has not shown that level in the NFL. Maybe it is in there somewhere, but I have not seen it.

Mitch being cut after being a high pick should tell you a lot more than no one signing Mason. Mason did have options he aid and chose Pittsburgh. Mitch sucked in Chicago when asked to carry the team he was adequate when the defense carried them.

In 2018 mitch had 6 games w/ 100+ rating and had a stretch of 3 300yrd games w/ 11tds and 3 INTs. 2 games were almost a perfect rating and he went 5-1. In 2019 Mason had 3 games over 100 rating, but in 2 of them he threw for less than 150yrds w/ a record of 1-2. In 2020 when Mitch got benched or whatever happened his worst rating was 71.8 and his team still won. He played in 9 games that year w/ 5 games being 95+ rating and going 4-1 in those games. They scored 30 points in the loss and in those games only one game was under 30 points which was 27. The games Mitch did not play in that year the most the team scored was 23 points with 4 games being less than 20. Rudolph is just not on Mitch's level. Is Mitch a #1 pick franchise QB, probably not, but as a backup he is going to be worlds better than Rudolph.

Mitch was extended simply to lower his cap numbers, since he was not going to be a starter. He wasn’t extended because the Steelers think he is the answer to their BU needs.

I think it served both purposes well. I think he is a quality Q. And there is more to being a back up then just the play.
