IMO, TD was a great back, but not HOF worthy, but with the HOF becoming the "The Hall of the Very Good" he'll get consideration. Too many guys are getting inducted or have already been inducted that really don't belong. The HOF should be for players and coaches only, if they want to put owners, GMs, contributors, etc into the HOF it should be a separate ballot, separate ceremony and on its own day, of course, no one would come and watch GMs, etc get inducted so they include them with the players and coaches. Then they should limit the number to 4 or 5 players/coaches each year.
There are players in the HOF, IMO, that shouldn't be there and some of them are Steelers. I don't want to start a maelstrom here so I'll leave that list to myself. But, I think if you take a look at what the HOF should be you can probably come up with a list of at least 10-12 players (all players not just Steelers) that shouldn't be there, maybe more. I think inducting some players that were great but not HOF worthy diminishes the accomplishments of those that truly had careers as some of the best of the best.
For instance, Stabler vs Namath, they were contemporaries, similar yardage, Stabler more TDs that INTs, Namath more INTs than TDs, Stabler winning percentage about 50%, Namath winning percentage below 50%, Stabler nearly 60% completion (in a time when defense was allowed to be played), Namath 50% completion, the difference, Namath won one game (a big one) after he guaranteed the win and he gets in the HOF. Personally, I don't think either guy belongs in the HOF, but if Namath is in, then Stabler should go in as well.

What devastates Davis' case even beyond his short career are the following names:

Mike Anderson
Clinton Portis
Rueben Droughns
Tatum Bell
Those guys also amassed 1,000-yard seasons in Denver during and immediately after Alex Gibbs' tenure. Gibbs was the godfather of zone blocking; his Broncos (and later Falcons and Texans) routinely turned old vets and absolute nobodies into 1,000-yard rushers. (see: Steve Slaton in Houston) Nobody in football ran the ball quite like an Alex Gibbs team. The HOF rightly recognizes that Davis, while a very, very good back, had his accomplishments and legacy inflated on a fantastic team with a stat-friendly system. If Mike Anderson can rack up 1,500 yards, and Rueben Droughns/Tatum Bel/Olandis Gary/Steve Slaton can post monster seasons here and there, then Davis' short tenure becomes a big problem.

Of course being a Steeler fan, I do not care for the Raiders of the 70's but I respected them...If it wasn't for the Steelers, we might be talking about the Raiders as the team of the 70's...
With that being said...the one QB that I hated facing was The Snake...how he is not in the Hall is truly amazing to me!

Is the Hot about longevity, or about sustained superior performance over a period of time where the players accomplishments are worthy of the HoF's consideration?

Accolades along the way like MVP fast track you to the HOF which is why it pisses me off that Ben doesn't get any consideration which is why he Wil have to wait like Bus did
Ben, Ward, and Troy will all get in over time. My questions will be:
Harrison, who I think will, because of the MVP and the Super Bowl play on top of his public fued with Goodell, which really increased his legend a good amount...
Aaron smith, who absolutely deserves it, but because he was just the best 3-4 DE of his era and one of the technical bests all time... The sad part is he may not make the popularity waves needed to entrance the Votards
Casey Hampton, who was one of the best NTs to ever play a 3-4, but as such will never have the stats that even a good 4-3 DT gets, and again, Voters are stupid press fools.
And James Farrior, who may be the most deserving of the bunch. but was cursed by playing the same position as RAY LEWIS so he got gipped from a ton of accolades over his career... Id put Farrior in over anyone but troy on the 2000's defense, which should be represented well after what it did in that time. The guy was totally cheated out of an MVP worthy season and several all pros by the name of RAY LEWIS

Next year, Alan Faneca gets his first shot. He should make it in but not on the first try.
I think as fans we tend to overestimate the potential of the players on the Steelers.
Faneca is a guard... maybe the best guard of his time, but its hard for them to get in...
And I think we underrate what the D did through the 2000's. they had an 8 year stretch that compared incredibly close to the steel curtain years. We as a fanbase tend to underrate that D based on the 70's D. it was a fantastic stretch that should produce multiple hall of famers. As far as 3/4 ends go, there just were not any better than Aaron Smith in his prime. And if you want a school of the best run stopping 3/4 tandems you start with Smith and Hampton. Farrior called plays on the field for one of the most complex defenses in league history. He was steller in every aspect from run stuffing to coverage to blitzes., sure Harrison, porter, Woodley, Troy, they got all the glamour, but that three man core inside is what drove the team to all those top 5 finishes in defense.
Harrison, Smith, Hampton, Porter and Farrior all great Steelers and great players in their own right but not HOF worthy IMO. Only Harrison will get any serious consideration, IMO, but I doubt he ever gets the call to the hall.

Will Shields got in this year being a 3X first team All-Pro and 4x second team.....Faneca is a 6x first team All Pro and 2x second team with 9 Pro Bowl nods. If Shields gets in, so should Alan.
