NFL to prove they don't need TV networks to deliver their games so that they can jack them for even more cash down the road.

don't count on it to be the norm. the NFL is making billions of dollars off of Sunday Ticket on Directv

For free, as in I do not need to register for the link and give out information for them to spam / contact me later? We shall see.

That's right and by proving that you don't need DirecTV at all means they have to offer the NFL even more money. I bet DirecTv would lose a huge chunk of th eir subscribers if they lost NFL. I know I'd drop them the next day. It too expensive and I can't stand how they nickel and dime you for everything.

I prefer DirectTV over cable. However, if they didn't have Sunday Ticket (or I quit subscribing), I wouldn't hesitate to, at least, shop around for a better deal.

I'm assuming you just need a Yahoo account which is free to sign up and you can use BS information, so they can spam Ron Mexico all they want, but I won't see it.

The NFL doesn't need DirecTV, that's no secret...DirecTV is the one that needs the NFL for the reasons you mention. I was more curious to think that something like this would have been against the NFL/DirecTV contract. You would think DirecTV would be smart enough to not allow the NFL to broadcast games elsewhere if they are paying hundreds of millions of dollars for exclusive rights. Maybe they do have that sort of agreement for games in the USA and not abroad which is why they are starting with only the London game? I can only imagine what Yahoo must be paying the NFL for the rights to just this one game.

All these cable and satellite companies days are numbered anyway. It is only a matter of time before most content is available streaming. HBO already offers an online streaming subscription you can get without having a cable or Sat subscription. This trend will only grow.

What will eventually happen is most people will get networks over antenna, then they will subscribe monthly to a handful of channels they watch most often. The rest will be a la carte.

This would be great for a channel like ESPN which has gone to **** over the last decade trying to be some sort of social issues network instead of sports. What happens when they need to attract individual subscribers?. Now they will get back to sports instead of whatever they are doing now.

Half the channels will immediately go out of business. What happens now is each channel gets a fee for every single subscriber of DirecTv or Comcast or whatever. NFL network may get $5 every month for every DirecTv subscriber whether they watch or not. This is how these channels you never watch stay on the air. They get paid no matter what.

Also with a direct subscriber most we may get better shows. Everything is geared toward the young demo for advertisers now. Shows get cancelled all the time with good ratings but just not enough young viewers. That could change if a show can make money from grown ups paying per episode or per season.

This change will take some time because there are lots of people who depend on controlling what shows you watch and what news you see. You having a say in that is scary to them. They may not be able to control you as well.

I personally think streaming sucks. Doesn't have the same picture quality of my cable. Will be cool for your mobile devices, though.

Interesting move by both parties. Apparently so far it's only the London game between the Bills and Jags (woo hoo) but it's a nice precedent to set that this will be a free live stream. Finally the NFL does something right in favor of the fans. You know, the people that actually make all this possible.

Don't kid yourself. There is nothing about this that is "good guy", "for the fan", of any kind. This is all about internet marketing, for PROFIT. The nfl is NOT about fan loyalty, it's about the $$$$.

Salute the nation

depends on where you are. there are times internet is good quality and cable only so so. sometimes it is just the opposite. it always seems to be marginal if the steelers are on.

Streaming is getting better, i have Sling Tv and the quality is pretty good.

The NFL is just testing their direct to consumer system. Did you think the NFL would be on free TV forever?

Just a matter of time. They are just planning for the time when the commercial based cash cow of network TV dies a slow and painful death.

Yeppers, free TV is dying, as with the nfl. Soon we will be paying $19.95 per game to watch the ww-e-nf.

Oh I completely agree with you. It is just nice for once to see the money grabbing side of the NFL actually intersect with something positive for the fans. In no way am I saying they are doing it solely for the fans benefit.

Doesn't do me any good, living out in the sticks I can't get an internet provider without ******* data caps.
If I streamed one game that'would be my monthly allowance.

I am doubtful of the demise of tv and cable. People have said that for years about radio yet it is still around. Some countries in Europe are planning for the demise of radio how ever it is rather unlikely here for geographic reasons and the number of people. The automobile will continue to drive the radio option as it is still something very useful to a public that is in love with the individual wheel.

There are homes with out computers in this country and internet access, yet they still have tv and in the cities top of the set antennas that bring them local broadcasts. The networks will always have advertisers that want the dollars these people spend few as they maybe individually in mass there is a lot of money there.

I think the demise is with paid cable tv, not tv in general. Look what happened to Sirius/XM, it was a fad that is dying out because it requires a subscription. So many people (including myself) are using simple over the air HD antennas and picking up anywhere from 10-30 free channels where all the important ones are HD quality. I live in PA so I get 80% of Steelers games on CBS in HD for free. Also, as more and more content moves online (as evident by this move from the NFL), that will just drive people to dump paid cable, grab an HD antenna for $30 and supplement what they don't get for free with a la cart online content. There are millions of sports fans who only have paid cable to watch sports since up to this point, there's really no other option. At least with TV Shows, you can wait for the show to come out on DVD or wait to catch re-runs. Sporting events are the only things that need to be or should be watched as they happen. If those start moving to online streams, that will be the end of paid cable.

For radio, it will exist because it's a cheap medium. Cheap to broadcast, and cheap to receive. It will diminish now that cars are moving to have their own wifi hubs. Why pay a service for XM or listen to the radio, when you can get your podcasts, and uninterupted music streams in your car? Does anyone know the price point for car wifi?

every game is streamed for free already...

but, shhhhhhh.

Haha yea until the feed cuts out at halftime or lags every 10 seconds. I've watched many of "free streams" but would welcome if a big online giant like Yahoo can stream games reliably with better quality.
