In regards to BPA, we have to look at the known VS the unknowns.

Steelers like versatile athletes. If you can play FS and SS (Reid) you might get the look over a guy who perhaps only home is at FS (Bates)

Steelers like big schools, so a (Evans) might be more attractive than a small school production (LVE).

Steelers like pass catching RBs, so if they were to draft Bell's replacement they might prefer (Michel) over(Guice).

Do they see (Rudolph) as a franchise QB ? We would know that answer if he is still on the board come pick 28.

Say in the world of choosing all of these prospects sit there. You take away injury, and small school, and subtract that (Big Ben) is going to be around 2 to 3 years. Hell maybe even longer.

And (Michel) is he really a first round pick of value?

Besides not trading up (Reid) just might be the safer pick.

Not sure he offers the highest ceiling, but might be the least likely to bust out.

We know by now who we like and want to draft.

But with the way Steelers draft who really makes the most sense ?

Why do you insist on taking away small school? How many less hall of famers would we have if we did that.

Ask the Steelers that is their approach with Colbert in 1 not mine. Or have you not been paying attention?

They did have LVE in for an interview. I would say they are interested in him. Yes everything being equal the will look at the big school guy but they have made exceptions for guys who have shown they have the talent and physical gifts.

Once in 18 years for Colbert. It doesn't mean they won't draft LVE in the first, but there is clearly a trend.

Most likely our pick will be LVE, unless they are throwing some serious smoke screens.

if we go for Michel, we'd be trading back. I don't believe anyone from 28-mid 2nd has that much difference in talent and potential. By adding the two in FA, we're not apt to reach for a pick and go into the draft pretty solid in all aspects. Thus, a BPA is easier to make over a need.

Our 1st pick will be dependent upon agreeing with Bell on a contract (or not), though.

Sign Bell:
Pick LVE

No contract:
Guice or Michel

Could be just doing their due diligence. or perhaps they were solidifying where they rank him and where they are willing to select him if available. He screams a Steelers second round selection more than a first round pick. Just 19 times out of 20 not their approach.

Unless they see him as really really special, and I am not sure there is a match-up in his college career, that could make someone lean that way.

What game what film have you LVE lovers watched that screamed to you man we need to select this guy?

Some of yinz loved his combine and fell in love I think.

Just not sure he is going to be this can't miss Urlacher type ILber.

Out of all the selections, I just wonder what people see in this guy that screams greatness.

I dont think there is any way they are taking a safety in round one or two. I've rewatched a couple games Ravens and Jags and frankly Davis was one of the only defenders tgat popped out. He got worked by Gronk in that game but rewatch the SB. Coming out of halftime they had a whole drive of Gronk. The Eagles had a pretty good D. Fact is if Brady throws it correctly no one can cover him. They added Burnett and I think they believe they are interchangeable. They will add the best ILB Vander Esche or Evans in the first and I believe the best running back or TE to fall in the second.

Greatness. No. They are drafting 1.28. I dont think anyone ever screems Greatness at 28. Watt had some intangibles and tangibles I liked late in round one last year. Im thinking this guy is in the same boat. He provides a day one need. Cover linebacker with upside to be a three down guy later on. If they can find that in a more sure prospect I'm good with that.

See but he is not.

Watt has heavy hands

..this kid has problems getting off blocks, only average burst against soso competition.Tall and he will flow to the ball more than blow up a blocker. He just doesn't have that Shazier type burst or those heavy hands to power around blockers. He might have 6 ray ray tackles which 5 went for first downs. He doesn't scream sideline to sideline from the tape I watched. 4.6 speed doesn't scream that.

So again negatives.

*one year wonder
* difficulty taking on blocks, with his tall stature
* not a true sideline to sideline burst
* level of competition wasn't elite

So he is athletic, so was Conley.

I haven't seen a more over hyped prospect for round 1 than this guy.

Watch this guy will be the looks like Tarzan plays like Jane type.

If I am wrong I will gladly be wrong.

I just don't see it. Go to youtube look at his game footage. Find me one that wowed you. I challenge anyone who loves this kid to show me what I am not seeing.

What did I see that was positive? He can flow to the ball in a short of work well. Short area quickness. So he will be able to make some unblocked plays flowing to the ball in the run game through a lane. And probably be able to cover well in a short area of work.

Just not enough for me to scream man this guy is a attractive looking prospect. We need this guy in 1!

And if he isn't screaming that against the competition he did face, what happens when he faces much better competition?

I'm going 180° and taking OG Willie Hernandez.

Overview
Vander Esch is a loose-hipped, instinctive linebacker who played in 2017 like he had a GPS tracker on the football. His production totals against both the run and pass are rare for being a first-year starter and with a frame that is primed for more muscle, his NFL ceiling is high. Vander Esch might benefit from a reduced role his rookie season while he improves his play strength and becomes more skilled at taking on blocks. He's an every-down linebacker with very good starting potential and the talent to fill up a stat sheet.
Strengths

Big, long and athletic
Has history of achievement with dominant performances and state titles in two sports in high school
Former basketball standout with fluid hips and smooth movement around the field
Almost no delay in his change of direction
Has agility and quick-twitch for sudden lateral bursts in his slides to close out slashers
Triggers with compact burst to the ball
Works under climbing blockers to stay clean
Easy sideline-to-sideline range as tackler
Has athletic ability to recover and tackle despite over pursuit
Widens frame and opens arms to welcome his prey as a tackler
Generally wraps up
Very talented in coverage
Quick but smooth in his drops
Mirrors quarterback's eyes with ability to redirect from side to side as he follows
Uses active, catch-ready hands to breakup the pass or take it away
Shows real rush talent and instincts as a blitzer
May have enough ability to beat a tackle as edge rusher from time to time
Most importantly, Mike Mayock REALLY likes the kid. Mayock also REALLY likes the kid to the Steelers. Mayock is the guy I trust and Mayock always has the best feel for the Steelers fit.

oh Mayock likes him that seals it. We should draft him !

I tell you what I see from tape and you show me a draft profile.

in the same profile it says

Vander Esch might benefit from a reduced role his rookie season while he improves his play strength and becomes more skilled at taking on blocks

He has trouble getting off blocks against lesser competition. Let this sink in.
Easy sideline-to-sideline range as tackler

I also didn't see this. He doesn't have this amazing burst. Or some instinctive marvel.

I think he is a off the ball coverage ILBer but I am not so sure he will be one that prevents those pass catches.Just the type to wrap up once he gets to them.

Again overhyped.

So in essence Slashsteel>Mike Mayock.
And Im not with Mayock because he is a professional and is there and is one of the few that actually looks at all the tape. Im with Mayock because of his track record especially when it comes to the Steelers.

I am the one who predicted Watt last year after hyping him over and over again. Sure I will be wrong, as so will Mayock. As he picked Willis to the Steelers last year. Cut Watt now and trade for Willis ****.

And I am not saying I am a better draftnick, but I can be right and he can be wrong.

And I am damn sure looking at tape , and you are damn sure slobbing some guys knob instead of looking at tape yourself.

Oh and the year before that he wanted the Steelers to draft Eli Apple.

Thank god the Steelers are our draft evaluators.

The year before that? Byron Jones with Dupree going 8th to the Falcons.

Yeah he is SOOOOOOO in tuned with the Steelers. GTFO with this bullshit.

Small school is okay, but I'd really like to see 2+ years of production and the player a the senior bowl.

Vänder Esch, Reid, Payne, anf Guice make sense to me in round one.

Vander didn't have two years of production.

I keep digging to see this in touch Mayock thing has with Pittsburgh and I finally found one.

I keep looking at Jarvis Jones on tape, and I don't care as much about the potential medical issues, I don't care that he ran 4.9. This kid plays football. He's explosive. He's a quick-twitch guy in short areas, and he reminds me a little bit of a LaMarr Woodley or a James Harrison. I just think he fits what Pittsburgh does.

So when he finally did get one right it was one of the Steelers biggest bust.

Well I dont know but I just went through Mayocks analysis of the following players.
Watt- Clay Matthews type player with size to put on more bulk and maybe better on coverage.
Burns- goes as high as first as low as third. Has speed. Some think he could be best CB in draft. Read between the lines boom or bust pick.
Shazier: One of the fastest linebackers he has seen. Epitome of new breed linebacker.
Jarvis Jones: He felt he fit the profile of a pittsburgh edge rushing linebacker in terms of body type and explosiveness. He was wrong. So were a lot including the Steelers. The draft turns a lot of ways. He doesnt have a crystal ball for who is taking who. However my experience is that if he likes the player and if he likes him to Pittsburgh he is usually right about the guy.
