I still think the Steelers are one WR short. Switz and Washington are looking early like the weak links.

I agree Slash. I really am surprised with Washington who I thought especially with Mason would be a big contributor. I'd like to see Eli Rogers signed and cut Switzer.
 
Washington is the biggest surprise, either he cannot get open or he and Mason not on same page when it comes to routes, turning to sidelines or into middle of field, bis question after watching Washington preseason.
 
I think right now Washington is a poor fit for what they're doing on offense. Don't know if you noticed the stat, but somewhere before halftime, they pointed out that the bulk of Mason's passes were behind the line of scrimmage. Washington is more of a 10 to 20 yard guy, I don't know that he's quick enough, or good enough in the open field for endless screens.

However, one would hope that Mason's ridiculous completion percentage will ultimately give him some confidence and he might start throwing downfield just a little more. Last night he had an 11 yard completion to Conner on a leak route, but he had Washington or JuJu for a 20+ gain breaking open. He just took the outlet. I am hopeful that as he gets more confidence he will trust himself and his receivers a little more and throw downfield.

I still hold out hope for Washington. In fairness he was only targeted once last night.

Now Switzer? I love that guy, but you'd think he'd be PERFECT for the current short-ball game. He just doesn't seem to have the elusiveness necessary to gain YAC. That makes me sad cause I like me some Switz.
 
I am very surprised they aren't using Switz more. He runs those shorter routes and gets open. Seems bizarre not to use him but if Conner and Samuels are in there, then Samuels almost plays that role. Samuels just makes plays. Really like the kid.

If you are going to play small ball you better have guys who are legitimate threats to go vertical or the defense will close in on you. Sometimes it is what a guy brings in terms of coverage allowing others their space. However, they will need to make good on that threat or it won't help.

Exactly like he did in the game. that will give defenses something to think about especially if he continues showing capable.

Not that he necessarily belongs in the loser category, but could Berry please learn to punt the ball towards the corner pylon instead of into the end zone? It would be nice if we could pin the opposing team deep a little more often.

Would that train of thought change if the coverage unit showed less than capable?

Samuels was great last night. I'm so glad to see him being used more even if it comes at the expense of Switz getting snaps.

Last night JaySam showed up out of nowhere. In a big way. That made sense in context of what they were doing. Aside from that toss to DJohn (is it?), they were in dink & dunk mode. This makes sense at the stage MaDolph (I had to) is. Assuming that there is thought among the coaching staff, and the jury is still out in that regard, if you will, one might expect to see some vertical action added in manageable measures in the ensuing games. Then it would be reasonable to expect JWash to seen in the stadium, obviously. MaDolph is a vocal enough kid to lobby for JWash, and if JWash doesn't puke all over himself, he could become a factor.

Now, I'm harder on Washington than anyone. He disappears in the regular season, but there is one thing he excels at, and it's not a glamour stat. He's an excellent blocking receiver. The second best we have on the team. He had a big part in keeping this offense productive downfield, with his blocking, and that is needed for this young QB help have a run game/short pass game, to get the offense going.

He does need to make some plays though.
