The life of a NFL player, which stands for "Not For Long" but in Boswell and Berry's case they might be not be going anywhere...... just yet.

Both players last season had their share of inconsistencies.Which prompted the Steelers to bring in competition at the position. The plan against the Tampa Buccaneers is to rotate punters Jordan Berry and Ian Berryman and kickers Chris Boswell and Matthew Wright. Despite this game plan the lines could already be drawn in the sand.

In Berryman's case he has shown a stronger leg in camp, from the naked eye that might look like the more attractive option. Berry has shown that he can directional punt while having the ability to show good hang time. Berryman will have to show in preseason he can directional punt, with good hang time in comparison. Traits which the Steelers seem to covet.

Boswell has shown slightly more accuracy throughout camp with a noticeably stronger leg. Wright has given it the old college try, he just doesn't look like a NFL kicker that is 50 plus yard capable.

In theory Berryman could improve in the areas mentioned, but with so little time to do it in. In Wright his leg isn't getting any stronger. So don't be shocked if this years kicker and punter looks a lot like last years kicker and punter. Hopefully with more attractive showings from both players.

Excellent post slash and YOU hit it right. I've thought for awhile they would keep their respective jobs, after all, they didn't bring in SERIOUS competition for either. Everyone thinks kickers / punters are a dime a dozen but they are not. The level of competition brought in this year is very so so and there are way better out there just not in our camp. I thin k that is a reason the coaches decided awhile ago they would keep our current but bring in a little something to push them. Berry has great inside the 20 numbers which affect his overall average making him look worse than he is. SOME don't grasp that but Remeber our coaches see them on a daily basis have a way better feeling for what & where they (Boz / Berry) are at respectively. I look forward to BOZ but am still a little shaky on Berry.

Berry has those short yardage punts that make you want to scream. That is his underlying problem. If he could clean those up he would up his stock.

Slash........Oh I fully agree on that **** sizzle once in awhile shanked punt thingy he does. I also think he can deliver more often than not. Bottom line I want a better punter but they aren't bringing one in that is a serious contender.

Cut the punter position, make every team either go for it on 4th or kick a FG

I still have a nagging suspicion that Boswell had a groin injury that lingered throughout the season and even flared up once in awhile. Obviously if you have a strain in your thigh/groin and you're trying to kick the **** out of the ball, every now and then you're going to exacerbate it. Given the fact that they finally IR'd him due to a groin injury, I wonder if he'd had it all along and they were just trying to work through it since it wasn't "terrible".

I don't know. But it would explain how he went from a 90+% kicker to just over 60% including a **** ton of PAT's. (Sure, they are a little longer now, but still a pretty straightfoward kick.)

No different than a baseball player getting a case of the yips. Boz will have a short leash

We all know Berry can directional kick the ball. He shanked it right out of bounds numerous times. :bounce:

The Steelers had a chance to upgrade both spots in the draft.

If I had my way we have a pro bowl punter at the cost of a 5th round pick in the 2018 draft.

The guy Tomlin cut in Wile was marginally better than Berry as well.

On Boswell I just don’t know. How many kickers snap out a bad slump like that? We won’t know if Boswell has it or not until the live bullets fly in the regular season. Or he can miss a 39 yard kick tonight and then what?

The Steeler made their bed at kicker and punter. Now they must sleep in it.

PS: with all the money the nfl has I have yet to see one special teams coach that was a kicker. IMO that guy would be best suited to judge and pep talk kickers. A small edge to add. I wonder which nfl team will hire a 2nd special teams coach who can teach mechanics with the credibility of having done it in the past.

Our NFL team needs to hire an actual ST coach as our current one just isn't very7 good. I hope he turns it around and actually coaches them up from 27th to top 12 would be amazing.
