After seeing Thomas looking like a rookie and making no plays vs the Jaguars 2nd string crew, I am beginning to think Thomas isn't the short or long term answer for the starting strong safety.

Perhaps a more experienced and more reliable veteran in Will Allen should start?

agreed with what you say. But again with giving up a fourth and third for Thomas, hopefully he gets it. start with Allen and still work on developing Thomas

Ummm ... about that. They didn't give up a 4th and a third to get Thomas. They swapped 4th round picks and gave up a third in the following year's draft. So, they didn't actually "lose" a fourth in order to obtain him. All that said, he's still a disappointment at this time.

Tomlin's specialty was cover 2 before he came to the Steelers. Our cover 2 looks weak. Is it the talent or the coaching?

Besides the obvious of him being short what plays were you able to look at to draw these conclusions. I haven't seen him enough to draw any

Well,

If you look at his college stats:

Thomas played four years.

He only had two interceptions for his 4 year carrier in the Big East which isn't exactly known for good passing teams these days. And he only had 7 passes defended in 48 games played. This is the opposite of a ball hawk.

As a NFL player he has zero passes defensed. And he got badly beaten in the last pre-season game.

Maybe things will change. I tend to doubt it. For now the stats in college and the NFL, and latest pre season game suggest he's not a good coverage person. I also think he's a bit flag prone and very injury prone.
