Just curious as to what path this CPOY bid for Ben Roethlisberger will play out.

With the downward spiral, I'm sure it affects his chances. The last PO game should not have a berring on it as it's for the season but I'm sure voters are influenced by it.

The media & "rog's" influence probably has it doomed from the start but how does Ben's body of work stack up to other candidates. I know ALEX SMITH WAS IN THE TALK BUT HE COULDN'T EVEN FINISH OUT THE SEASON (sorry for caps).

I think he should still be in the running, what say YOU.

I believe the voting for all the awards is completed before the playoffs begin, however, Alex Smith was likely to win it anyway.

The guy nearly had his leg amputated.

Would you give it to Ben?

I'd give it to Smith, but Ben is deserving, he had a major injury to his throwing elbow, that no QB has ever had before, and he had a pretty good regular season and played every game, but the last one, healthy scratch.

Alex should win, as well he should. Stop with the "rog" nonsense.

Alex smith played like **** in every single game except one half against us... he appeared in 8 games.. had a 78 qb rating, threw 6 tds in those 8 games along with 8 picks... he threw for under 6 ypa in 4 of those games... he was hot garbage who was less ****** than their first round bust... the only reason he was seeing the field was the rest of their qbs were utter crap...

Ben came back from an elbow surgery nobody ever had before... he had 4 4th quarter comeback wins this year when another loss could have doomed us to no playoffs at all.. no qb with bens pedigree has ever missed a whole season and not won it the year he came back even with a lesser record and stats...

But hey alex smith got on the field and rode a good D into a losing record division title and almost lost that to a tanking team in the last week... hooray for that... participation trophies for all!!!

nobody gives a **** about how well he played or didn't play. again, the guy was VERY close to having his leg amputated. had to have MULTIPLE major follow-up surgeries to remove infections that could have ended his life. the fact that he put on shoulder pads and a helmet and stepped on a field again, and actually won games is, in itself, a small miracle. it's not even close. stop being a Ben fanboy, you're a grown man, for Chrissakes

Would you give it to Ben?

YES I would and some here would call me crazy. It's not just what you are coming back from but how well you play . Face it, it's a contest of who came back and how well they did.

B EN had a career ending injury, just as Alex Smith but the difference was how it was addressed and how well they came back tyoplay after wards. Although sympathetic towards Alex it still remains BEN out played him by a mile.

Now OMAR may not like hearing this but at this point here is where the "influencer" comes in. The "vote" will favor Alex Smith and Ben will be kicked aside as SO MANY Other STEELERS have been over the years since the STEELERS unanimously voted against the "rog" (only team to do so).

Although TJ WATT should be a lock on DPOY, I wouldn't count on it as a sure thing until the vote says so, even then it will have to be by a land-slide . The pro-bowl has set that up as well as Darnold (spelling) was the only defensive unanimous vote. What was some dipshit doing voting his way who was clearly way behind WATT getting unanimous vote? Pretty sure it was "influenced" like it or not.

TWO cents

Agree Alex went through a far greater ordeal to get back to the field. I don't even know what the premise for the award is but I will bet Ben wouldn't have wanted it anyway.

Same thing for DPOY .... I think TJ could care less right now

Spense had virtually the same thing happen a few years back... He had the Robert Edwards injury with more severe nerve damage... it often leads to leg amputation... so where is his CPOY trophy? If its a near death staph infection tons of players have had them and recovered through the year... you dont see a CPOY trophy on gregg lloyds mantle... Those guys were mediocre after their comebacks.. spense was a great story... but his play was meh...

The last two Pittsburgh cpoy guys were maddox and Bettis... maddox beat the league giving up on him and Bettis has a good year after being benched and traded... both won it because after coming back they played great...

Its not about injury.. player win this award just for having a ****** season Followed by a great one or Unretiring and playing good... it overcoming adversity to play at a high level...

Alex smith is a compelling story, but that whole part about his play can’t be overlooked... he blew... he couldn’t win the starting role without haskins sucking. You have two major qbs who came back from Potential career Ending injuries.. one played significantly better than the other... it should not be a question...

Every year guys come back from severe injuries... they dont all win cpoy... the injury qualifies them for the award... their play on the field is what determines it...

If Shazier were to miraculously play a couple games next year as a backup, and Haskins catches on somewhere and throws for 50tds and 5 picks and leads his team to the top seed, Haskins should get it over shazier... shazier has the more compelling story And movies should be made of it... but Haskins was the more deserving candidate on the field... both overcame adversity... shaziers adversity was far greater, but the end result was Haskins had the far better season after that adversity....

I think people here are confusing the CPOY for the courage award... CPOY has never been awarded based on severity of injuries overcome... the Halas courage award from the pro football writers association is for that... thats the one shazier won last year for fighting back and walking again... For instance in a previous post I mentioned Robert Edwards...

For those of you who don’t know, edwards was an pro bowl rookie RB for New England ... doing the stupid pro bowl pre game contests they used to do, he hurt his knee playing in the sand... it was basically the same injury as Sean Spense had... dislocated knee, every ligament torn, nerve damage, near amputation, told he wasn’t going to walk again...

It took him four years to make it back into the league as a third down back

He won the george halas award going away... do you know who he lost the CPOY to? Tommy freaken Maddox... maddox didn’t beat some catastrophic life threatening injury... he played good enough to claim a starters role after being banished to a non nfl league for a while...

Does axex smith deserve the halas award... absolutely.. the CPOY, nope

I still think smith will get it. He basically led the WFT into the playoffs after many many surgeries and rehabbing for 2 years. Ben had a legit shot, but the offense fell apart the last part of the season which i think will doom his chances.

It's NOT what happened off the field but what happens on the field ONCE RETURNED TO PLAY. (Only shouting because Canada is so far away).

Paul, I hear what you are saying but there are many stories of injuries that took players off the field BUT CPOY is awarded to the best player returning and ability on the field of play. NO, the hospital stay doesn't account for how well they play on the field. Both players had a possible career ending injury only to different parts of the body. What did each do once they returned to the field???
