What should the Jaguars have done on 4th down, late in the game

Did the Jags make the right call on 4th down?

  • Take the safety and keep the lead, but give your defense better field position.

I was 99% sure Brady would drive for the touchdown on a short field.

Punting from the 20 on the free kick isn't exactly saying they're gonna have better field position.

Especially if your kick off team cannot stop the returner from getting 20+ yards on his return.

I wanted to put in a "Mike Tomlin " type of option. There are times to take the safety. It can kill some clock, and help your defense, but you need to be up 6 points to do it.

The free kick after a safety typically travels further than the average punt and has much better coverage to it because there is no snap and rush on the play. The punter just boots it from the 20 when ready with the defense taking off without being blocked.

He had the WR, he just had to lead him, instead he underthrew him allowing Gilmore to make a play on it. The WR was behind the defense, if he just leads him, that may be six, but Gilmore probably would've just tackled him before the ball got there and there'd be no call for PI anyways.

The return is always way better on a free kick. The ball can travel as far as you think but when you out punt the coverage the return will be great.

The Jags were back up and backed up teams seldom get big punts. New England got a huge return. Most punters these days are pretty good, and could go for hang time if they wanted to.

So the free kick would probably push the opposing offense 20 yards further back and if you run the safety correctly you could drain a few more seconds off the clock. IF the Jags were up 6 points, this would be the best call.

You could have positioned somebody behind the grassy knoll.

So...you are saying Marrone is a moron for not doing what you think he should have done?

You'd expect a defense that likes to run their mouths that much to make a stop after a punt.

Tomlin's gut would have called in the field goal unit and attempted the longest field goal in history.

Then kicked an onside kick just to show em
