What, pray tell, is our offensive system?

So this has been bothering me...
We give a lot of lip service to being a run first team... but we really arent. The Arthur Smith System is typically based in 2Te sets with the QB under center, but we seem to run a bunch of sporadic shotgun spread sets we absolutely arent staffed for.
The Oline scheme is some passive nonsense that isnt great in the run game..

I just dont get the vision... all the short quick wrs might be ok in an up tempo game that played a lot of crossing abd slant stuff, but we dont do that...

Im just failing to really grasp their grand plan... when the run gane works, they abandon it, when it doesnt, they run into brick walls... its kind of stupid

I miss the jet sweeps to the TE and the slow developing bubble screens.

Najee is probably happy that his injury has saved him from running into his LG's *** 3 yds deep in backfield this season.

See, i think we have a ****** Oline scheme and dont teach proper technique...

I also think the Staff fell in love with the jumbo set as a way to mask that, but it kneecaps the passing game
The O-line is subpar in both the run and pass pro.
The Steelers arrogantly traded away the best WR on the team.
That kneecapped the passing game the most.
34 million for a WR #2 on pace for 900 yards this season.
Bad coach, Awful coordinators
5 consecutive years of nothing but FAILED draft picks.

I saw this disaster coming the day they Traded George to Dallas.
It's exactly the same as trying to replace Bell and Brown with Ju Ju and Conner.
The Steeler way has become self sabotage.

We have Smith, Muth, and Washington, along with DK, why aren't we putting those guys, along with a rb out there on every down? Every one of those TE can block and catch, and we can literally do anything we want out of that set. Granted, there isn't a true speedster there, but that's what DJ is there for, he's that guy you need to watch deep. I swear every time I see our midget poor hands WR trot out there like they are NFL players I want to throw a ******* brick though my tv.

Joe

Just like during the Canada years, almost every offensive play is from 5 yds behind the LOS to 5 yds past.
Aside from the lack of jet sweeps and bubble screens, I don't see much difference ( except a few missed long bombs). Late in the game when desperately trying to mount a comeback it was 3rd and 10 and we threw a 2 yd pass with 2 defenders waiting. Same crap I've been watching for years.

that my friend has been the $10,000.00 dollar question for the last 10 years.

You run a OL blocking scheme not conducive to the run, WRs not conducive to the pass attach, no schemeing to the oppositions weaknesses, it’s like shuffle board for the play-calling, lost in space series.

NO IDENTITY of any kind, can’t establish anything, to many doghouse occupants.

I know the Tomlin supporters don’t wanna hear it but he IS the one constant over multiple coordinators, quarterbacks, and players. If he says for example “don’t throw over middle” then that’s on him, not several different people over 5+ years.
I've been saying the same thing for years, the defense has been torched in the playoffs going back to 2016, Tomlin is the only constant, multiple GM's, DC's/OC's, QB's, players at every position except Cam, this offense has looked similar every year since 2020.

I mean, without looking, over the last 5 years, how many games have we scored more in the 4th quarter than we have in the first? Maybe all of them? We are at a streak of around 60 games of having no more than one td scored in the first quarter..

Yet we routinely have comebacks or near comebacks in the fourth

All of that are signs of a repressed offense

And that comes from the head coach

Art's offensive philosophy is focused on run first, but he has the wrong backs for the zone blocking scheme he deploys. Warren is a downhill runner and lacks the patience and explosiveness needed for this scheme. Art also has a few Offensive linemen that are not athletic enough to zone block. So, he inserts a jumbo package to mask the OL deficiencies, but this is a tell to the defense that they're running the ball. now, Art can scheme passing plays out of the jumbo package but Muth, Washington, and Smith aren't real threats to most backers or safeties to cover. DK is the only real danger in this package, so walk the safeties into the box, corner takes outside leverage, safety covers inside leverage, rest of defense focuses on run. Another factor is Rogers really don't have the agility or speed to effectively run the play action pass any longer unless he stays in the pocket. He's been under center about 34% of offensive snaps this season which means Art's bread and butter isn't being used all that much. He's had to adapt plays, formations, and the timing of those plays because of this and it's all a hodge podge of duct tape and bubble gum.

How do you fix it this season?

1. Change to a power gap scheme that fits your OL personnel and backs and utilize the tight ends in the trap schemes - running game improved
2. Put Rogers under center at least 50% and use more play action and incorporate more pre-snap motion and shifts - unpredictable offense
3. Incorporate more intermediate routes, use bunch formations and route tree combinations to utilize Roger's football IQ - passing game improved

How do you fix it moving forward? (other than punting Tomlin to the curb, gotta get ahead of the haters)

1. Just admit that this next season will be building up a young man to be your franchise Quarterback, whether it's Howard or someone else in the draft. Stop with the Band-Aid veterans.
2. Get your #2 WR for piss sakes!! McLaurin or Sutton for free agency and draft two for good measure. If you don't know about the freak that goes by the name Nyck Harbor, you will after the combine. 6' 5". 240lb, 4.24 forty. 👀.
3. Fire Pat Meyer and Isaac Williams - They couldn't develop a hemorrhoid after gorging at an all you can eat cheese buffet. I'm sure Art has a few guys in mind.
4. This one goes to Art Rooney the second: Hire two god damn people to booth review potential challenges, and tell Capt Cool Shades that if they instruct him to throw the flag...throw the ******* flag. Narcissistic prick.

Nice post.

1. Don't the Steelers always struggle when they try to switch to zone blocking? That may not be the case, but it feels like it.
2/3. Other teams do a very good job picking apart the Steelers defense to avoid the pass rush. With maybe the most intelligent QB ever, you'd think the Steelers could add this wrinkle to their offense.

1. I agree. Whether it is Howard or a draft pick. This year's draft is turning out to be a dud and they'll say "wait until next year star-studded class" and the same thing will happen. Find a QB with college production and NFL tools and develop him.

2. WR depth is suppose to be excellent in the draft. Make it happen there.

3. This should've been done years ago.

It's literally pray and tell, as in have a tell that let's the opposing D know what we are going to do

As for#1... we tried in 07/08 to move away from the erhart blocking scheme to some trendy zone scheme... it failed miserably for all the reasons Bad at pointed out from this year, we tried replacing olinemen for a few years, scapegoated the oline coach larry Zeirlien, then switched out for a while, then tried to go back post Todd, usually now we start off doing that abd switch midseason when it isnt working and we are losing

Take play calling away from Smith. Let AR call his own plays.

Beginning of season Aaa-Ron YES

Current Aaa-Ron NO.

Current Aaa-Ron wants out. He doesn’t want to get hit (can’t blame him at 41yrs old). He is looking to escape the pocket WAY too soon. ONLY Aaa-Ron can fix this.

HC and him needs to have a conversation about this. If Aaa-Ron fails to fix this soon and we continue to lose…………

I’d hope he benches Aaa-Ron and starts Rudolf before the season is lost. Rudolf will stand in and make the throws. the OL will benefit, receivers will benefit, and Aaa-Ron will not be hit.

Coaching is hard decision making, not just going for it on 4th down.

Jonnu sucks out loud at blocking, like he may be worse than CA3 he sucks so bad at blocking

Muth is also a subpar blocker, he’s C- when he’s at his absolute best. He’s made a handful of solid blocks all year.

Asserting all those guys can block is a big stretch

DK can when he wants to, but like all receivers he’s not always too interested in mixing it up…he definitely takes his “breather” plays when assigned with blocking too

I'll give you credit. You are like a pitbull on a poodle over them trading away Pickens. Even though it was never gonna work here anymore. Even though the guy, while talented, does so many dumb things. Like not block for teammates. I agree with the most of what you say, but let go of the Pickens whine.

Except Tomlin was the coach with Haley and others when we did throw all over the place. You can't dismiss that. I think the big problem right now is the zone blocking scheme, and I blame Tomlin for not getting rid of it. I hate the scheme. Particularly with young talented lineman. Let them use their size and agility to go hit someone without having to overthink it.

For a portion of the killer B's run with Haley, tge defense was atrocious... and because of the franchise and fans ancient thought patterns, that was blamed on the Offense being too quick strike..,

As it went on, the offense was shifted to something just there to eat clock to save on the D... its an archaic way of playing football that should have died in tge early 2000's...
