Former NFL player-turned-NFL analyst Chris Canty plunged into the deep end of the hot-take pool.

On FS1, he said there are some in the Steelers organization that are “praying” that Ben Roethlisberger retires.

Canty doesn’t specify who those people are. Based on attempting to catch passes from Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges, my guess is that those people are not the wide receivers.

If what Canty is suggesting is that the Steelers privately think that Roethlisberger is washed up and that his elbow is shot — maybe.

But if that’s true, no one has put their name to that.

And the Steelers are in no position to draft his replacement without a first-round pick in 2020.

Or, if they were to cut him — as Bleacher Report suggested — Roethlisberger’s release would only save $8.5 million, which wouldn’t exactly open up enough free cap space to acquire his replacement on the open market via a trade or free agency.

Moving forward on the hope that Roethlisberger’s elbow is going to be OK is a risk. It’s also one that the Steelers are best positioned to take.

After spending 17 years in the quarterback desert, I don’t see the Steelers adopting the “let’s make a move one year too early, as opposed to one year too late” mentality with Roethlisberger.

These guys like Canty know Jack **** about the Steelers and Ben. They just say stuff to grab attention.
I’m confident that Ben will make a full recovery and be on time for OTAs. Will he be the same QB that threw for 5100 plus yards in 2018? Of course we all hope so but not so certain he has to be. With an improved running game and much better defense he can throw for 3000 yards and in the high twenties in TD tosses and be efficient and with that defense, we’re going to win a lot of games.

Yes, he had a serious elbow injury and how he comes back from that will tell the tale.

But let's not forget that the year BEFORE that injury he was top 3 in yards and TDs in the league. Ben has consistently been one of the best producing QBs in the game and that's while going up against some of the best to ever play the game AND the best to ever cheat at the game.

canty has ******* zero clue as to what's going on in the Steelers organization. He's just trying to stir the pot, he's a ******* moron.

Yeah, the Steelers defense is top notch, they traded their 2020 1st round pick away, there would be a **** load of dead money counting against the cap. Yeah they are really hoping he retires, idiot.

I listen to what BEN says and he said he is looking forward to his return.

**** the nay-sayers and "tony"-followers. and all affiliated cheatriots & MASSholes.

EDIT: added MASSholes because they are so likeable

Tom, exactly on the the dead money against the cap, just like the dead money from Mr. Big Chest but much more.
Then Canty says those in the Steelers organization wish he’d retire. Like he knows the people in the front office and they’re going to confide in him.

Chris Canty, as in, former ratbird, Chris Canty?

HA!

no one has talked about Canty in a while. now his name is in the news. wonder what he will say next week.

No one in their right mind wants Ben to retire. If he can't play at close to his usual level, he may have to retire. But, that would kill the team until his HUGE cap hits go away. It would hurt the team more than it would help. Now, if we suck and get a top 5 pick, we might be able to find his replacement but the players and the fans would hate things until that happened. No one likes losing.

Well Canty certainly brought attention to himself, which was probably the purpose of the article.

if he retires doesn't his salary go away as well? I doubt the Steelers would go after any bonus that he has been paid so that would probs hurt

He'll have it from a "front office" source that BEN is progressing ahead of schedule.

Ben has one more record to set before he retires: longest gap between SB wins for a starting NFL QB. I think no QB has won another SB after a 12-13 year gap.

That's his decision to make. I believe the competitor in him doesn't want his career to end last season did for him with the AB drama and the blow out loss in week 1. There's a very small window for Ben to get his 3rd ring now and he can elevate himself above Eli for rings in that 04' draft class and push the Steelers one above the cheats for 7 total rings.

And Ben wants to win another one so bad I'm sure it aches in his bones and haunts his dreams. "Sick competitor" I think I once heard him called.

If the elbow checks out, he's playing no doubt. And contrary to what that dipshit Canty says, nobody in their right mind is praying for a Hall of Fame Quarterback to retire.

That runs a 12 on the bullshit meter. If they could save a bunch on the cap it would be different. Pretty sure they are hoping he can put it together for one more run. 8 million gets you nothing. In fact I'd prefer to roll the dice with Rudolph and draft in 2021 if he sucks.

They are on the hook for his contract. They will save some cap space but not enough to make a difference. We certainly couldn't sign a legit vet. We would still be stuck with Rudolph.

Big Ben is one of the toughest QBs I have ever seen play the game yet keeps coming back. We Stiller fans are spoiled having him all these years. I hope he has a solid year and we stay in the hunt. BUT he will soon be 38 (March 2020) and father time waits for no one.
