We had a deal with St. Louis at #9. in rd 2

You mean the Great Oz didn't pull one over on Tombert?

I still think we would have considered Maxx if he falls to us in rd 2. We could have taken Golson in 3, Grant in 4, wideout in rd 5. Balt would prob have taken Coats if we did not.

Maybe, but I have serious doubts we would have actually traded for him. I'm not, entirely, convinced that Golson would have still been there in round 3, either. I doubt GB takes him over Rollins, but there is a decent chance that the Colts take him over D'joun Smith. I suppose it is possible, though.

I agree SteelChip, I'm not, and wasn't, a fan of Maxx. I was glad when the Ravens selected him right before us.

We would not have traded for Maxx. We failed to trade up for Rowe/Collins and decided to go BPA in rd 2. Maxx was possibly our BPA there, and a need. I do wonder if we would have taken him over Golson. Hell, it would have been cool to get Jalen Collins.

I think at that point it had to be Collins. Tomlin had met with him and seemed to like him. I bet he was a guy they at one pointed coveted in the first round. I have to believe he was the guy if they planned on moving up.

At this point we are looking at speculation from a sports caster. He might be right but unless the steelers say they tried to go get xplayer it really does not matter we will never know. At any rate it is hard to decide who you would like to do with out from our draft picks and it will likely be at least 2 of them and maybe 3 to move up from where we were. I'm not sure that would be a good deal at all. And as to trading away next years picks for this year I'm not sure the Rooney family would have permitted trades of next years picks by a coach and gm not signed past this year.

I'm not implying anything about a coaching change by this just saying that management has not decided to extend the contract past this season yet.

Considering Carolina was willing to outbid us, I'm glad the FO didn't get more aggressive in getting the trade done. We needed to keep the picks we had, including those in next year's draft.

Those guys in the video work for the Steelers, so I'm sure they are in the know.

I have another quote from some stuff on rapid round up Friday.

* The target was a cornerback – most likely Jalen Collins from LSU – and the Steelers thought they had a real chance at a deal with the St. Louis Rams, the owners of the ninth pick in the second round. As the Rams went on the clock, Carolina swept in and bowled them over with an offer that included swapping picks in the second round and throwing in a third and a sixth.

* Naturally, St. Louis went took it, and the Panthers picked Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess. Carolina spent three draft picks on that guy? Not to be judgmental.

* Anyway, the Falcons followed with the 10th pick in the second round and used it on Collins, so at that point the Steelers’ calls to the teams above them looking for a trading partner were geared toward picking Senquez Golson. A cornerback.

Now it looks to me that the steelers were still considering trading up after Collins was picked. Seems to me if he was their pick they might not have tried to trade up after he was gone. I still do not believe they were going to trade up for a tight end in the second based on what was there and if whats his name dropped to them because baltisore did not trade up I suspect they would have passed on him any way.

IMO, they weren't coveting a TE at 2 at all....Heath, a resigned Spaeth, good rep guy in Branchflower....they could go with last years model and be ok enough not to blow a 2nd on a TE....and Maxx ain't all that...just a shinier TE in a weak draft at that spot.

Tombert said Golson was ALWAYS their guy.

yeah always after yinz couldn't trade up to get *someone else*.

I'm good with the pick, and as a PSU guy, I'm happy they got James.

I agree. Maxx was the best TE in this draft class by default, not because he was a top prospect. When you're talking about a guy like James who was picked in the 5th being as good or possibly better than the 1st TE picked who was picked in the 2nd round, it doesn't say much about the kind of talent in the TE draft class this year.

Actually if you look at the value chart they got fait value for the trade.

#41 = 490

#57(330)+ #89(145) + #201(11) = 486

The Steelers have said multiple times they were looking to trade up in round 2 to take Golson. So, this should be no shock to anyone.

If they traded UP to get Goldon, this board would have blown up by Page #500 of the "Steelers traded up for WHO???!!!!" thread.

The FO is totally full of crap. They says they wanted to trade up for Golson because they rafted the kid and don't want to say they wanted someone else. The FO liked Collins and Rowe...that is a fact. My guess is that they wanted to trade up for Collins and one that fell through they said **** it, lets just se what the board/draft gives us. Maxx fell, and was prob BPA for them.

They were totally drafting for need in rd 2 d were gonna take a corner regardless...which I think is dumb. You could have traded down and still got Golson later in the round. Hel, he would have been there into rd 3. Because they didn't trade down they either really loved Golson, or got scooped by Baltimore on Maxx. You would think that after Rowe went we would have traded down. I would have.

That could have been a good option if they had any takers but it would be taking a big risk as there were a lot of corners taken in the draft much earlier than anyone thought they would go. Four were taken in the first where for years it was no more than two. I was surprised by how many were selected when there were lots of them and the draft seemed to contain no real star players.

What this really shows is that Golson must have been the last CB they had with a 2nd round grade. There must have been a significant drop off after Golson if they tried multiple times to trade up.

True that this draft was low on upper end TE talent, I do think Maxx will be a pretty good player. His tape shows how he fights for yardage and has a nose for the endzone. I'm sure we will see some of it up close next year. Personally though, Pitta is damn good and it will be tough to get snaps over him as a rookie. Maxx's effect will be in 2 TE sets and the redzone. Time will tell...

I'm pleased we didn't overpay for Golson and got James in the 5th round. Good value at both spots for the B&G. Maxx may be a good TE for BAL, but James is really not that far off and we kept our 5th round pick. WIN!

So I am assuming to trade up to #41(490) we'd of had to give up our #56(340) and #87(155) for Collins. So I guess we will see if Collins end up better than Golson and Coates in three years. Maybe the Steelers reached on Golson to fill a need but then came back with BPA hoping to hit gold with Coates so if the Golson pick flops it still doesn't look so bad.

yep. That is precisely what I believe. Going by their board, if they stayed true to it, Golson was the next best available.
Even he said he didnt expect us to take him that early.
