Steelers to sign XFL standout Cavon Walker

MAR 25, 2020 3:14 PM
Now that the XFL season has been cut short by COVID-19, its players are free to sign with NFL teams. The Steelers plucked one from the upstart league Wednesday, signing defensive tackle Cavon Walker to a one-year deal, according to his agent J.R. Rickert.

Listed at 6-feet-2, 287 pounds, Walker, 25, led the XFL with 4.5 sacks in five games for the New York Guardians. He played at Maryland from 2013-17, converting from linebacker to the defensive line. Walker went undrafted but spent the 2018 preseason with the Chicago Bears and training camp last year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Adding Walker now gives the Steelers eight defensive linemen on the roster, including practice squad holdover Henry Mondeaux. Last year, they made similar moves by signing players who excelled in the Alliance of American Football. Two of them, safety Kameron Kelly and outside linebacker Jay Elliott, even made their way onto the 53-man roster. Like Walker, those two led the AAF in interceptions and sacks, respectively, so if anything, the Steelers might at least be intrigued by players who produce at a high level in the minor leagues.
