This offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers*was one that saw several changes within head coach Mike Tomlin‘s coaching staff. The most notable change came January 18th, when quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner was promoted to offensive coordinator in place of former coordinator Todd Haley, whose contract was not renewed after a disappointing end to the 2017 season. If Randy can do half of what this article leads to believe,.......then he is a WINNER in my opinion. Imagine plays called to the stregnth of the players. Think about that for a minute. Makes it even more important for BELL to be in camp. Good luck to the "NEW" STEELERS offense.

The only thing I want to understand about Fichtner's offense is that with a top 5 QB, top 5 OL, and the best WR and RB in the NFL, can they do better than 18th in red zone scoring?

I'm thinking our red zone offense will improve under Fitchner. Haley was such a dunce, seldom calling play action, and eliminating the QB sneak.

I think a lot depends on the health of TE McDonald which would go a long way improving the offense within the 20. Also, how well the rookie Samuels adapts to the NFL where he could be incorporated into the mix. Just my two cents!

One would think with the talent on the team, putting the players in a position to succeed would result in a top 10 red zone scoring O.

As I always thought there was a little under-performing in this area when comparing talent level.......

Add much more play action passing
Kill the bubble screen to WRs on first downs.
No trick plays inside the 10 yard line
QB sneaks on 3rd and 4th and short
Use the god damned FB on short yardage plays, also refer back to play action passing

If there is a defender 10yds off of AB or JuJu, I call the bubble screen every down. Outside of that, not a chance...

Great article Kelly,

I've always felt that Ben was tailor made to run a 'K-Gun' or 'Run and Shoot' spread offense. With the great hand technique on the receivers we currently have, their talents best suits ball control needed for these high volume pass attack. Bell is also made for this offense, with his ability to read the defense and select the appropriate running lanes, the receivers spread the middle of the field thin for him to exploit.

I'm also very comfortable with the idea of Ben having play calling and audible reads. He's been in the league for 15 years, he can handle this duty now.

Great points and I'm looking forward to how this offense executes in the regular season, since we won't be able to see Ben run it much in preseason games.

Here is my advice to Randy. Design your offense to stay ahead of the chains and take your shots once you are in the 25-15 yard line going in.

I never understood having the receivers all bunched up and everybody close then run the ball, **** that put all defenders in the box and made tough sledding. SPRED them out and I like our chances.

This offense sounds like what New England runs - spread formations, screens, QB centered offense...

I don't care how we move the ball or get points, but the playcalling can't be horrible like Todd Haley's...
