How come they are both great players but never at the same time. If Heyward is hurt Tuitt's play is at a whole other level. And vice versa. Heyward wasn't doing much in the first part of the season when Tuitt was killing it. Now Heyward is an absolute wrecking ball.

I was thinking almost the same thing. Heyward is getting older so that is why they probably want to definitely keep Tuitt. But, for a couple series when Alualu was in there, he and Heyward along with Bud and Watt were just unstoppable and they didn't need another blitzer. Yes, the Steelers got a ton of pressure with only 4 guys and 2 were OLB's!!!!!!!!!!!! Who would have thought? Hargrave looked OK when in there but I think Alualu hits it faster. I also saw Buggs and his first step is slow as molasses but when he finally engaged an o-lineman, he does push him back ward. He really needs to work on his first step and quickness off the ball.

Buggs probably has that think too much which affects his game - often rookie issue.

As far as Tuitt and Heyward goes Tuitt gets hurt a little too much for my liking. I think they have played well together but when one gets hurt it is easy for the other player to feel pressure to make up the difference. It isn't that one is playing below the line IMO when they are together though. DL is a very hard position to analyze, statistics often won't tell the whole story.

Also a thought is about what their assignment and responsibilities are in the defense. Thinking way back to the Aaron Smith days, he'd never make the Pro Bowl but was critical to making the LBs Pro Bowlers and play makers.

It's possible with Tuitt and Heyward in the lineup that one is assigned a role and the other has a more strategic and defined role that doesn't make the Stat sheet.

Now Cam is probably getting more of those make me a Pro Bowler type assignments in our defense than he would have with a healthy Tuitt.

Essentially we all watch every down. In the first what was it 4 games Tuitt was frequently walking his guy back to the qb. Heyward wasn't doing much. I'm not talking Stats I'm talking the eye test. If Heyward played like he is and Tuitt played like he did they wouldn't have lost a game. That is like having two Aaron Donalds in there.

I like your appreciation towards them, but I can't drink the Donald kool-aid just not at that level. Not that they don't have their moments of shine.

But if you want to pin a label Tuitt has been consistently inconsistent. Heyward is more the steady as he goes type.

Well it's how your defense is configured. And what you focus on. But basically yeah for the last three games Heyward has played all pro. So we can use Donald's name or not. He is all over the run and getting consistent pressure and sacks throughout the game.

Heyward gets the double team is starting wear down and I think now without tuitt for this year you need to give McCullers 5 of Heyward reps and Buggs 5 as well to keep him fresher. Buggs well a lot in the draft but he has the body and frame to be perfect rotating DE/DT for us like Tyson or guys back in the day like Travis Kirskie.
McCullers dresses every week but is hardly used in the mid rnd draft a pure NT who will be able to contribute more ala have the size and weight to play both NT and DE ala 6"3 320 McCullers at 6"6 340-350 just does not get enough low leverage which has been his Achilles. I was wanting toi see a 3 DL set like DE Heyward DT Mcullers DE Tuitt and dare with vs a combined 1000 or greater 3 man DL and tj in a 2 pt on edge teams dare to try to run. Hargrave is getting better vs the run, 2 years ago he got exposed in the jags game were they kept running up the gut and then mt and butler replaced him with Tyson.

They were both killing it this year before Tuitt went down. And sadly, it was Tuitt's best season by far. He was dominating the guy in front of him. Didn't matter who it was.

It's only because they've been injured a lot or Tuitt hasn't been consistent (often times due to playing through an injury). Heyward basically always plays at a high level and does a lot of great things that don't make the stat sheet.
