Espn is repoting that Bell has officially held out long enough that the Steelers can place a cheaper transition tag on him at a fraction of the cost and retain his rights next year...
Even if he does still leave they will gain better compensation than the comp they would receive...

Assuming they hold him out the two games without pay when he does return, it’s unlikely that his next contract will be more valuable than had he played this season under the franchise tag...

I thought I read somewhere the transition tag just gives us the option of matching any offer sheet Bell signs with zero compensation if we don't. I could br wrong though.

This is what it is. Just gives them the right to match an offer. No comp if he signs whatever offer elsewhere.

Yeah but I think they can still do the trade to not match deal... basically they can still deal his rights more or less... the old trasition tag let you recoup the draft pick of the round the player was taken in... but that left the cba in 06...
teams cannot poison pill contracts anymore so they are useful again... but teams don’t like to burn bridges by ******* with rights like that for a lot less than tge franchise tag... i guess we don’t give a **** if its true we are thinking about it.....

Transition scenario that has been discussed with a couple GMs on NFLR is that if the transition tag is used, Steelers can workout something with the team giving the offersheet. Basically, we (Steelers) won’t match your offer if you trade a 3rd and 5th rounder (for example). It’s a risk though, since the majority of GMs figure the Steelers want to move on regardless.

Nope. No more Bell games. Let him leave and take the 3rd round pick. Tired of him and hope he never touches another football with the Steelers.

I like that scenario Ike. Give me your second round pick and he’s your headache now. That would be great to have four premium picks in the 2019 draft.
****, two second round picks! We could get some serious help at CB, ILB. And not have his cap strap tag weighing us down so a couple quality F/A pick ups.

Steelers likely could only match and trade and they won't do that because the initial signing bonus would be dead money.

He is my thing on Bell. If he comes back he would be a liability imo for a couple reasons. First, will he put the effort in and more importantly pass protect to the level he can/should? Second, I don’t care if he is in Superman shape, ....when’s the last time dude played ball? I recall after his last hold out. Wasn’t it a hammy right away like most hold out folks.

It would be amazing if he came back and could sub out JC. Put in the effort for this team and for his future other team money. I just don’t see him being that type of dude.

I tag him regardless. They don't have to match. As for him being back? I wouldn't give him more than a series or so a game. Connor has earned the job, period.

Points on the transition tag:

1. You trans tag someone if you want to retain them. This is no longer the case in Pit
2. you do not get compensated for losing a trans tag player
3. No one would be dumb enough to trade for a trans tag player, when they can just make them a contract offer, without having to give up draft compensation. Trans tag players will never be traded. They are on the open market and will sign with the highest bidder.
4. If Bell doesn't sign this week, it will be a non exclusive Franchise tag.

Me'Veon has perpetrated a cruel hoax on the Steelers Football Club, his teammates and the Steeler fans. He has forfeited to date approx. $8 million dollars (and counting).
Whatever the Steelers do with Bell they might also refer ( but not pay for) him to undergo some type of psychological evaluation and treatment. To sacrifice one's game time exposure so as to demonstrate value for present or future contract negotiations and sacrifice a small fortune? Doesn't sound like rational behavior or Bell has been grossly misled by his moronic agent and or others.

Here is the problem with that. If we sign a couple free agents next year, we may not get that 3rd comp pick due to the offset.
It may end up being a 4th or 5th.

My opinion - pretty much what Cope said. You TT someone you want to prevent from leaving. That is the opposite case with Bell.
The only thing I might do is give him the non-exclusive FT. Some team will give up some picks to get him.

I'm starting to feel like the best thing is to bring him in see if you can carve out a role and if it appears not pay him to sit at home which is what I thought they should have done with Harrison.

You transition tag him so you can trade him for assets. He ain't walking out of here without us getting something for him. Whether is a comp draft pick in 2020 or a trade this offseason, we're getting something back for him.

Teams don't trade Transition Tag players, because any team can negotiate a long term contract with their agent, and the team holding the tag can sign the player for that contract, or let the player go sign with the team that negotiated the contract. It's tag is only for the right of first refusal, and allows the market to set the multiyear price. It could have been a smart move, but Conner is showing the Steelers no longer need to pay that much for a diverse all around running back.

The Steelers tried signing SF punter Sean Lee before they drafted Sepulveda. Steelers made him a contract offer and SF accepted it, forcing the Steelers to draft a punter.

When does Bell have to report this year?

According to my math he has 48hrs.
8 games left
2 week roster exemption
6 games rostered to accrue a season.

Seeing reports saying Nov 13, but they don't make sense.

He doesn’t have to report until week 10... the two week roster exemption counts as games rostered for whatever reason

I still hope for number 4.

We'll see.
