By Brandon J. Wallace SteelerNation.com ** On “short” weeks, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin meets with the media on Monday’s for his weekly press conference instead of the normal Tuesday agenda. After a huge win against the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday, the Steelers will prepare to take on the division rival Cleveland […]

Anyone who has criticized HCMT, and you people know who you are, must, if intellectually honest, note that this badly banged up team has held together under circumstances about as bad as I can remember. Being one of his critics since 07, albeit a deeply logical voice, I must recognize this effort and congratulate him. They pay him to manage and lead, and manage and lead he has done. I wonder how much of a factor the '1933' cap has been. Perhaps it's close enough to the Tomlin psyche to remind him whose mantle he wears. Regardless, it suits him.

Anyway, well done Coach!

We already selected him Coach of the Year!

But that could change if he loses to the Browns, lol

My issue with Tomlin is that he can't win in the playoffs. Lots of teams have lost players this year. Belicheat lost Brady for a year and went 11-5. New Orleans lost Brees for 5 weeks and went 5-0. A horrible team like AZ has won 3 games with a midget rookie QB, no offense line, no defense and an aged Fitzgerald. The Rats have taken a RB and made a QB out of him and are 7-2. Indy has as many if not more injuries than us and lost their #1 QB to retirement just before the season and are now on their #3 QB for who knows how long and they also have lost their #1 WR along with other injuries. Carolina lost their QB and have won the same number of games as we have.

And I could go on. Right now the defense is carrying the team because the offense is horrible. Does anyone really think this team is going to beat the pats***, Rats, or KC in the playoffs if we make it? This team is winning off of TOs. Without getting 4+ TOs this team will struggle to beat anyone. They are good to have but you can't count on them against good teams. The pats*** won't give you 5 TOs and they sure aren't going to be held to 12 points.

THat can't win in the playoffs argument wouldn't go very far here in the CIncinnati area. Marvin Lewis couldn't win in the playoffs. Tomlin has won in the playoffs, maybe not as consistently as we spoiled fans would like but damn it he has been to two Super Bowls and won one and almost won the other. Argue all you want about who's players he was coaching but he has won and you can't take that away from him. There are plenty of legitimate ******* you can make about him but that one doesn't fly with me at least not living around here.

He's won 3 playoff games in 9 years. All 3 of those were against backup QBs. His losses were against scrubs like Tebow. He won with Cowher's players. After they started leaving the playoff success started leaving with them.

You can argue it all you want but the stats and early playoff exits don't lie.

Also I don't give a damn about the bungles. You could have every HOF player in the NFL today to go the bungles and they'd suck. The FO is horrible and the organization is horrible. They haven't won a playoff game since Reagan was president. Let Tomlin go there and see how many playoff wins he has in the next 10 years.

I just want us to make the playoffs this season as I do all seasons. Maybe this defense is in the midst of something special. Maybe our offense improves week by week. Or maybe we implode as it seems many on here would love to see just to say...I told you so.

Just an example of my ire for Tomlin -
He told the broadcast crew that "you don't play defense the same when you have Ben Roethlisberger as your QB." In other words, "We didn't really try too hard on defense all those seasons, cause, why? Now, when they have an inexperienced QB, NOW he teams up with Butler and puts together a dominant defense? Are you ******* kidding me? You know how many SBs they could have won with a defense like this and Roethlisberger? He just came right out and implied that they didn't really focus much on defense cause hey... they had Ben Roethlisberger.

Dumbass.

Jackson was never a RB

Tomlin "optimistic about the possibility" of Conner and DeCastro being able to play

so, next two days of practice will tell us more

DeCastro?? Or do you mean Ramon Foster?

DeCastro?? Or do you mean Ramon Foster?

Yeah that guy, I get them confused, lol

Meanwhile word Is Conner will try out his bum wing in the weight room to see if he has full strength and range of motion

Hold yur breaths

Tomlin still hurts more than he helps. Not a fan and I'm sticking too that.

I've been fooled too many times to change my mind. We have ZERO shot at winning the championship this year. It's a feel-good season to win some games you aren't supposed to, but in the scheme of things it probably doesn't matter. Maybe the players can start believing in themselves that they are capable. Maybe the defense establishes an identity and swagger for next season (and the seasons to follow), but Tomlin will find a way to screw it up or make inexplicable changes or "coach different" because Roethlisberger is back on the field (what an idiot thing to say).

I'm right there with you. I've been calling for his head for a loooooong time but yesterday specifically, He made some tough calls and I applaud him and the coaching staff for them. Now if they would just keep Switzer on the damn Bench...

Did he really say that? That's ******* idiotic, and that's an understatment.

That's as stupid as when a few years ago in Baltimore he said their offenses wasn't doing much, so he didn't want to open our offense up any.

Just curious, why are you so sure MT is referring to not trying hard on defense with Ben at QB? And do you really think that MT would have passed on adding the likes of Bush, Barron, Nelson and Fitzpatrick to this defense just because he had Ben at QB? MT may not be the brightest coach in the world, but ANY NFL coach needing help on defense would have gladly added most or all of these players if they were available to them.

He came right out and said they played softer D with Ben at the helm. Without Ben they are now playing more aggressive. He has ALWAYS been a play to not lose coach, and that is why he lost so many games to scrub teams. I would much rather have a play to win mentality every day.

Well his track record says he has spent a butt load of 1st and 2nd round picks drafting defensive players. Heck his very first draft pick was Lawrence Timmons. Yes he hit some homeruns on defensive player and struck out some. But, it's not like he hasn't invested on building a younger and faster defense. His biggest struggle has been drafting and developing defensive backs, but the past couple of years his been pulling in free agents. So I really don't buy into that he just didn't care about his defense while he had Big Ben.

I think his intent was to really speak highly of Big Ben... He has been consistent at treating Ben as a HOFer. Keeps him from being overworked in the preseason knowing he is aging, has several audio clips of him praising Ben from the sidelines in games, there is evidence of MT tipping off Big Ben when the team leaders wanted to address Ben on a locker room issue. I just think MT just wanted to remind the national stage of Big Ben. Because, people outside of Steeler nation don't really give Ben the same respect as he deserves.

If I'm a defensive player, like Cam, I'd be pissed. IMO having a HOF QB would allow you to play more aggressive on D, if you get burnt you have a QB that can come back.

Steelers get in the playoffs, Tomlin a shoo in for coach of the Year - write that down

I just call em like I see it

Now for the really optimistic, Dream Hard

It's unbelievable that the Steelers could have a chance to walk into M&T at the end of the year and steal a game to go 12-4, win the division and be possibly the no. 1 seed.

That is still on the table for them with their schedule

We all know Coach Tomlin has his faults. Nothing to see there.

What Vader didn't point out is that we lost THREE SIGNIFICANT PIECES of the offense in one fail swoop:

1. #84 goes crazy and gets cut - 60% of the offense went thru that guy.
2. Ben leads the league in passing yards last year and we can probably attribute that to the early season ending injury for #7 - the drop off in offense is HUGE.
3. Coach Munchak decides to leave the Steelers/Coach Drake dies 7 days before the season starts - say what you will - losing these two coaches was a HEAVY IMPACT on the offense right away and we're still seeing effects of it 10 games into the season.

But eh, we're 5-4 now and, realistically, we've only been blowout in one game.

Let's take a quick walk back in time...

Week 2 - Steelers lose game to Seattle; 28-26 {Ben is lost for the season}
Week 3 - Steelers lose game to 9ers; 24-20 {Rudy's first start but he was less than stellar - defense has 5 turnovers but is gassed because they're on the field all day}
Week 5 - Steelers lose game to Baltimore in OT; 26-23 {Rudy is KO'd in the 3rd quarter}

That's SEVEN COLLECTIVE POINTS across the #1, #2 and #4 teams in the power rankings as of today.

But feel free to complain about our terrible season...

Carry on.

Maybe if we had better coaching those close losses turn into wins with some, dare I say, strategy?

Look at my scenarios again.

If you don't think there was REAL IMPACT in the loss of a revered coach, your first string QB and you're #1 WR come on, man...

Those are TRUE HURDLES.
