Tomlin on Dangerfield

Consider head coach Mike Tomlin among those who pulled for him, as he lavished praise upon the first-year safety during his weekly pre-game press conference. “Jordan Dangerfield had an opportunity to start for Robert Golden”, he said. “Jordan answered the call. His tackling was very consistent. He wasn’t out of place. He was high-energy”. - Mike Tomlin.

Agreed. Now if I were the reporter I'd ask the following

Coach, why was Dangerfield who flashed ability in the pre-season games was buried behind Thomas and Davis on the depth chart.

Also, when Davis comes back, who's get the snaps over whom?

He might not answer either question, but its worth a try.

More like I told ya so. Before he played in the KC game, I mentioned Dangerfield is much better tackler. I also said his play can inspire. Things Tomlin said too.

But to ask you, assuming Davis is at 100%, who would you rather have out there playing, Davis or Dangerfield?

Wrong. I give props to all players, even the ones I quesiton.. Most recent example I didn't think much of Berry. He has been excellent this year. How quickly your forget.

I never said you called him a bust. I only stated that you think he sucks and have a hard time seeing the positives in this young player.

Hasnt Davis been primarily used as the nickel? Because of his coverage and CB experience?

If they were using Davis is an 'in the box safety', then I could understand your point. But you are suggesting that Dangerfield has adequate cover ability?

In college and in came Davis was beaten often when he played outside or in the slot. He also had issues tackling in college. And some dumb flags. No need to repost it again. Davis' problems have been magnified in the NFL and opposing offensive coordinators once they get enough film on a player know where the mismatches are. Davis, at least for now is ill cast for coverage roles as he has made zero plays on the ball and leads the team in missed tackles.

It was assumed that without Shazier, or Nickle and Dime would suffer. Kanas City has a good Tight End and receiving Running Backs. That was not the case with Dangerfield playing for Golden who had the hybrid safety / Nickel backer role.

I'm not saying Dangerfield is a good coverage safety. The sample is too small and it needs to be proven.

I will say the tackling with Dangerfield was considerably upgraded over Davis, who might be our only DB who's played a good amount of snaps without a play on the ball. So we know the tackling with Dangerfield is better. The coverage between player between the two as to remains an unknown.



My solution:


I hope the Steelers use Golden more for coverage ( mostly Davis' role, I think Goldlen a former corner is our best coverage saftey anyway ) and let Dangerfield play the closer to the line of scrimmage for the zone type of stuff in our dime and nickel ( Golden's role in many cases ), pushing Timmons and Davis off the field for most of the nickel and dime. IMO, this would improve our overall defense.

Thoughts on that suggestion?

It was a reply to Bigappleyinzer that I built upon. I watch all the games the steelers are in. When available I'll use video or 3rd party data to back up my points.

I think Davis is miscast in deep coverage, and since he has issues with tackling, isn't good at playing closer to the line either.

My point is Golden can take Davis old spot in deeper coverage, and Dangerfield can play the hybrid S/LB role that Golden was in was in when the Steelers play nickel and dime. Mitchell's coverage responsibilities can remain unchanged.

This way we have what looks like to be our best tackler closer to the LOS and what looks like our best coverage safety further back.

It makes sense to me.

I'll tell you why we drafted Sean Davis. Because this team is sick and tired of getting gutted up the middle by talented receiving TEs. It was our achilles heel. This season, what have the TEs done against us? Washington has 2 good ones. Celek is a great all around TE with excellent hands, I know Cincy is missing Tyler Eiffert, but TEs were allstars against us last year.

Davis is a big part of why we're not getting gashed by TEs on a daily basis. He is built for this role, and he will continue to improve.

Once again if you watch the games there are way more that go into it then stats.. shamarko is a lot of times the first guy down and if he doesn't make the tackle he forces the returner where his help is. There is more to playing well then bottom line stats.
