Tomlin Contract per ESPN’s Schefter

The stars might be aligning for a Tomlin exit this winter, but if they somehow win the division, he's probably here through 2027, regardless of what happens in the playoffs.

I know there are growing numbers of fans rooting for losses at this point to put an end to the Tomlin era, and I can understand why, but I'm just not wired to do that, as much as I want a new coach.

None of us want losses and this state of the Steelers.
I don’t, and have not, openly root for losses or failure.
I want to SBs every year.
I want wins every game.
But the reality is, none of those can happen with THESE incompetent boobs at the helm.
Art II AND Tomlin both need to go before we get back to where we should be.

If the Steelers don't move on from Tomlin after this season, it's almost certain they'll pick up his option. They won't enter the season with a lame duck head coach. However, if the Steelers continue to play ugly football and miss the playoffs/get blown out in the first round like usual and he comes back, next year will probably get to Matt Canada-level chants and booing at home games if it's more of the same or worse.

I’m not rooting for the Steelers to lose. Let’s just say if they lose games and it leads to change, I’m not going to be all that upset.

Per Adam Shefter of ESPN Mike Tomlin’s contract has a team option year in 2027 that the organization must pick up before March 1st 2026.
So it’s not difficult to move on after this season if Rooney chooses.
It will be interesting.

The most likely scenario unfortunately is Tomlin is extended again before March 1

If the team doesn’t pick up his 2027 year option or extend him would Tomlin coach on a 1 year deal?

I also unfortunately highly doubt Rooney flat out fires him and eats the last year of his contract because that’s not what daddy or grandpa would do so he won’t do it either regardless of how feckless the performance of Tomlin is

I think with the fever pitch so high in Pittsburgh this past week it got things rustled up and writers like Schefter did some digging.
Afterall, Tomlin never experienced fire Tomlin chants before so now it’s the big story.
I just want this mess to be over and for this organization to realize that it’s so time to begin rebuilding. Finishing in the middle every year is not the high bar we’re accustomed to and predictable season losing slides where we rip off three game losing streaks every year has gotten real old.
Then the stupid narrative this past offseason of we’re all in, we can do legendary things on defense.
Going out and adding older veterans which is simply a bandaid over the wound.
This had all the earmarks of a major collapse and we’re witnessing it first hand.
I don’t know what the final five games have in store but I predicted 8-9 this past summer.
The best thing that could happen is a losing season to finally end this charade and then acknowledge it’s time to tear it down to the studs.
Trade as many older veterans as you can, try and move up in the draft using some of these veterans to draft your franchise QB.
Retool this entire coaching staff from Tomlin on down. Call it whatever you need to call it with Tomlin. It was mutual, whatever, who gives a ****, just get him gone.
Bring in a young innovative offensive minded head coach, Clint Kubiak a Shanahan disciple, and let him develop you QB.
Let him hire his staff and don’t retain any of Tomlin’s lackeys.
I have finally lost my enthusiasm and zest for this team after 63 years. I’m embarrassed by them now and cannot stomach watching them any longer.

No chance these guys did any digging, they were fed information from either Tomlin's camp or the Steelers FO.

Only hope is that Tomlin is tired and wants to move on or start over.

What can Tomlin do? Paint with a broad brush. Put a bow on things. Yea, he will be able to find a job.

So essentially the whole thing comes to a head in February of this year. Cause if they didn't pick up that option he is not coming back in 2026 as it will be a lame duck situation. But let's be honest they are picking it up and he's back in 2027.

Of course Rooney will pick it up. We all know how this clown operates.

I don’t think Tomlin walks away from 16 million per season.
My own opinion, I think Rooney picks up the option for 27 and that will be Shades last season of coaching anywhere.
He won’t go anywhere else where he wouldn’t receive the same protection Rooney has given him.
After 2027 he’ll go straight to a lucrative TV contract and spread his bullshit every week.
I think we have two more seasons of Shades unfortunately.

Bingo. Unless he wants to keep coaching in which case he will be here as long as Deuce is team president.

Well that's the problem right hurt. As a fan I cannot cheer against my team. But a playoff berth followed by another wild card drubbing probably means they pick up the option. That reality became a lot more possible today.

I think if we get to the playoffs and destroyed by buffalo again they might mutually part ways

They either "mutually part ways" or the option is getting picked up. There is no scenario in which the Steelers keep Tomlin and don't pick up the option. I'd be more worried if they gave him another contract extension because that would lock us into a minimum of 3 more years of mediocre football with no end in sight.

I don't know - why even put a team option in the contract if you're going to pick it up no matter what? Seems to me there may be some pressure on Tomlin to show some improvement over getting arses kicked and one and done in the playoffs. That's assuming the talk of an option is true - a bit odd there has been no mention, in one and a half years since signing the contract, of the third year being a team option, then suddenly a few days after Steelers' fans are chanting "Fire Tomlin" at Acrisure, it comes out in public that the final year of Tomlin's contract is actually a team option.
