Patriots to release veteran slot corner Kyle Arrington

The New England Patriots continue to shake up their cornerback group.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Kyle Arrington will be released on Monday, according to a source close to the situation. Arrington had been due $3 million this season, none of it guaranteed.

ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss had the first report of Arrington's impending departure. A reunion between player and team "has not been ruled out," according to Reiss.

Arrington, 28, has been the Patriots' top slot cornerback for the past five seasons. His value was on display in January's AFC Championship Game, when he held Colts star T.Y. Hilton to one catch for 36 yards in a blowout win. Arrington finished 36th out of 108 qualified corners in Pro Football Focus' ratings. In 2011, he led the NFL with seven interceptions.

If Arrington does not return at a lesser salary, the Patriots will defend their Super Bowl title without their three top corners from last season. Darrelle Revis signed with the Jets in free agency, and the team didn't make a play to retain Brandon Browner. Malcolm Butler and Bradley Fletcher will likely step into starting roles with Logan Ryan in position to replace Arrington in the slot.

I would hire no one else from the Devil's Brigade. Four weeks before the end of the season, he throws a fit, gets cut and ends up back at the *'s.

Someone will claim him off waivers like the other CB they released.

I'd rather sign Pierre Thomas to be our third down back.

He may not be subject to waivers. Players who have enough experience don't go through waivers, just young bucks. Besides, does anyone want to pick up his $3 million contract?

Ummm, Bell is suspended for 2-3 games and Deangelo is old. Pierre Thomas as the third down back/Deangelo's backup for the vet min would be smart.

Absolutely no need for Pierre Thomas. Deangelo has years left in him in the role they will look for him to have and we have plenty of young guys on the roster. Thomas would be a waste in my view.

RB is set
DeAngelo and Josh Harris will split duty for 2 games. Not the end of the world.
Add Bell when his suspension is over and we'll be just fine.

Well that's a pipe dream. Pierre wants to go somewhere and play and after week 2 or 3 he'd never see the field.

not sold on Harris, and DeAngelo will have to be looked at closely in training camp to see what version they are getting.

Why would anyone be responsible for "non-guaranteed" money???

Crazy. Give me a guy who can play 16 games over one who may contribute a few carries for the first two or three. The Steelers won't make the move after drafting two cornerbacks, but I wouldn't shed a tear if they did.

Thomas wouldn't be that bad of a signing. Hypothetically, if Josh Harris washes out in preseason and Thomas is still there, why not. Until then, I'd play wait and see

Pierre Thomas would be for the vet min, and cost us $500, 000 in cap room. He is also 1 million times better than Archer or Josh Harris.

A player has to want to sign with a team. Thomas would be behind two other players after Bell's suspension.

Agree that he probably wouldn't want to be buried on the depth chart, but if he is willing to for the minimum, he would be a great No. 3.
