Timmons in coverage

It's time for the Steelers to limit his coverage assignments. He's simply not as fast as he used to be. Most of the tight ends are faster and taller.
 
yeah I will have to say between Vince and him, one would hope neither gets dropped into coverage often....

Shazier is our best coverage linebacker by far. Williams is not a coverage guy period.
 
We may go big Nickle(dime) more this year..something they were doing at the end of last year

The Steelers 3-4 scheme will help their lack of speed. Go back to the previous guys within this system. I'd say Farrior was a great cover guy while Foote was good against the run. What left the middle linebacker position open was Lebeau bringing Polamalu up on a blitz often. Since the defense doesnt really have Polamalus dynamic ability on field. I can see Williams/Timmons getting two safety's in the back in case they get beat

Depends. I think the safeties need to help out the corners too. Our 7th round pick produced in college and has done some nice things in coverage at camp. I wonder if he could hold his own in the nickel.

Maybe that's why they are hanging on to Thomas, he seems able to at least be better at coverage while still being able to handle run support ?

As long as Shazier is healthy, it shouldn't be a problem. Timmons was starting to lose 3rd down snaps in the nickel and dime packages to Shazier anyway last year. I think the Steelers are aware, though I don't think he's a liability.
He's smart and if we get pressure, it will limit the amount of space he has to cover.

Playing Timmons on 1st and 2nd against the run and then changing up the scheme on third with one extra dback IMO will help more than anything the 3/4 could help with.

Besides the Steelers have been morphing away from the 3/4 as their strength lies with the D-line. If anything the LBers will cover more. Which JJ, Shazier, and possibly Dupree being capable.
 
And that's why they extended Vince Williams, they know timmons isn't a viable all purpose ilb anymore and vince is way way cheaper
 
I think next year Williams will be the base buck backer and in the sub packages probably Fort comes in for coverage.

The 3/4 is still present though. I agree the extra d back will be helpful. But when the team runs the 3/4 scheme, just my opinion

He came off the field last season with Shazier staying on when they came out of their base 3 - 4. You are a tape guy. Just refer back to games last season. I'm sure you can find at least 3 or 4 minutes somewhere.

I felt Timmons coverage was a weak point last season. He's just too slow at this point in his career. didn't Timmons play a lot of nickel last year?
 
Timmons have been a workhorse in the middle for years. 2012-2014, he played 98%+ of the defensive snaps. Comes off the field vomiting, goes back in later. 2015 it was 95%.

Didn't watch last year, but read that he came off the field quite bit last year.

Always out of position and whiffs way too much. I'd say most his takles he does get are chase takles from not being able to make the initial takle to begin with. Watch we get better after he's gone.

So he misses the tackle and then recovers and after chasing from behind makes the tackle?
 
Lane assignments. He doesn't make the initial takle when the ball Carrier comes right at him, then has to chase him down the field to make the takle. Pretty self explanatory.

LOL. I'm sure most of his tackles come this way over the course of his career. You are on top of it. LOL
