The defense gave the offense more than ample opportunity to score point in this game and they couldn’t. This is a very good SF offense and if our offense could have done their part and gotten a few first downs in the first half and given the D a breather, we win this game for sure. 5 turnovers people!! Fichtner is simply terrible...

The entirety of the game doesn’t matter. In the fourth quarter, with a lead, inside of two minutes, the defense didn’t make the stop. Yeah, the offense should have put up a touchdown on even ONE of those turnovers, and Conner is a real son of a ***** for fumbling the ball. However, they still had the lead, and the defense gave it up. No doubt the offense put them in ****** situations; Hell, they’ve done so all year. But today they had a real opportunity.

The 9ers were moving the ball up and down the field the entire game. If not for Steelers D making a couple plays and the 9ers making several dunderheads plays, the final score would have been very lopsided. The Defense absolutely contributed to the loss today.

As with most issues it was coaching... this nfl is slanted heavily towards the O... even in great position the d has a slim chance of making plays when tested... thats why late game leads are virtually impossible to hold anymore... once any offense starts trying more high risk plays they start scoring more easily....

I think in the game thread i even said once tge D blew the lead our O would look better... you don’t win with defense... you score until the other team gets one dimensional

The D added one very good play maker, but the same can’t tackle dumb *** penalty taking celebrate missed tackles players are still on the field.

Why is it so F’ing hard to not let the other teams players have 5-6 yards wide open every damn pass?

I don't think they know that they are allowed to actually cover the middle of field

20 plays allowed greater than 10 yards. That is appalling. Are the 49ers really that good?

We are playing essentially a rook QB, that is learning the speed of the game. Way too early to tell, but he seems a little confused out there.

This will get worse before it gets better.

Yes it was, give them credit for aggressive play in first quarter but fourth quarter is where you win games. Twice we were up and the defense allowed SF to come right down the field. look at the number of 20+ plays they allowed and many runs on first down were 7 and more yards. To many open receivers and have yet figured out how to stop any TE. Third and long more than not the offense gets the yardage needed against this defense of ours

Without the turnovers this defense gives up probably over 30. Maybe two of the turnovers were great defensive plays, but mostly just the 49ers just shooting themselves in the foot. The D was looking pedestrian and tired in the second half. But agreed the offense needed to cash in on the TOs.

But this is a general team theme. This team has no idea how to build on momentum. If the offense grabs momentum, the defense gives it right back. If the defense actually figures out how to make a play, the offense can’t do **** with it. As a team, they just cannot build any type of rhythm they just get comfortable after making a play or two and give it all back. Been a theme of Tomlin teams since.. forever

I love the players we have on this defense this D could be really special. Tuition and Hey are awesome des one of best tandems in the league they are only average defensive tackles. Fitz looks right at home in the black n gold. Bush looks like he has some big play ability and you have to wonder what bud dupree’s Numbers would be if he just rushed the qb more instead of trying to cover the slot. Butler just isn’t putting these guys into position to excel. They can’t get off the field on third downs, we get sacks but we don’t keep consent pressure on the quarterback because the dumbass calling plays keeps changing the fronts and formations and rushing just two down lineman. The secondary played somewhat better but again communication was poor they seem confused half the time and then boom goes the dynamite they give up a big play... this defense will not be playoff caliber defense with butler as its coordinator pure and simple.

Simply putting the truth out there.

I don't think they know that they are allowed to actually cover the middle of field

When you have a rookie and a moron for ILB's the middle is always going to be wide open.

Problem is the moron and the rookie's play are interchangeable.

the 49ers had 436 yrds and ran 73 plays. The defense more or less got lucky with the turnovers. They could not stop them them or anyone for that matter. You can blame the O for not staying on the field, but the D is the same as last year. I guess technically you can't blame the D, because it's coaching

Right now they are both bad. But the rookie can't help it right now. The moron is a vet and should know better. This is why I take the off season and draft stuff with a grain of salt. Bush was going to be calling the defense and making plays all over the field. He's the DPOY. Barron was a great FA signing and a vet to help fix the inability to cover TEs. When the real games start all that bluster goes out the window. Now we have a bad FA signing and a rookie just trying to find where he is suppose to be on any given play.

Yep, the D was ****. 3 of the turnovers were gifts. The D got run on, passed on, and came up short with the game on the line once again. I think they're worse than last year. The coaching staff is abysmal. Like the O, the D has no identity. There's about 3 or 4 guys with talent on D and the rest are bums.

Of course it is the defenses fault. They gave up 24 points.
It was ALSO the offense's fault. They only scored 20 points.
Is it the players fault? Sure it is. They didn't execute the game plan.
Is it the coaches fault? Sure it is. Fitcher is a ****** play caller. Don't get me started on Butlin on defensive scheme.

Y'all can argue this **** all week but one things leads to another and the argument is always a cyclical. Both units are at fault.

No the rookie actually makes some plays Barron does nothing.

I'll re-watch the game tomorrow. But I don't remember Bush making any plays. His tackles are way down the field and he isn't covering anyone down the middle. The fumble recoveries are because he's just in the right place at the right time. He didn't cause any of them and they've just been where he was standing. He's a middle LBer so I'm not shocked he's around where the ball is fumbled. But if you go watch (it's on the NFL website) his last fumble recovery, he is being blown off the ball by the TE (I think). He is so far away from the play it's ridiculous. The ball comes out and he runs for it and gets there first. I appreciate his effort but your ILB can just be there to scoop up fumbles other players force. He has to make tackles around the LOS and in the back field. He hasn't shown he can do either yet.
