He is taking the heat because that’s his job, he’s the boss,” Roethlisberger said. “He’s the head coach, he is supposed to take the heat. When you are the head man, that’s what you are going to do. You are going to get blamed and it is going to come down on you whether it is your fault or not. That is just how it works. That is the way the league works, and that is the way sports work.”
Roethlisberger said that he doesn’t believe that Tomlin’s coaching style has fallen on deaf ears. Tomlin is midway through his 10th year as the Steelers’ head coach.
“No, not at all,” Roethlisberger said. “He his our head coach, and we respect what he says. There’s no mutiny forming.”
• Roethlisberger said that he didn’t receive final word on whether or not he will play against the Ravens until two hours before kickoff.
“He came and told me ‘let’s go with it’ and let’s go make this thing happen,” Roethlisberger said. “I know it was going to be (Tomlin’s) decision, ultimately, if he got the clearance from Dr. James Bradley and I got. He told me to wait until Sunday. So, Sunday morning he sent me a text when I woke up and asked how I was feeling and let’s make a decision when I get to the stadium and I do some stuff on it.”
• Roethlisberger conceded that he wasn’t “super sharp” against the Ravens, but the plan all along was to run the ball with Le’Veon Bell.
“The game plan whether I was playing or Landry was playing was to run the ball,” Roethlisberger said. “We ran on first down, second down, third down. We did a lot of running the ball, and that was the game plan going in. I just never got myself into a good rhythm until late.”
