Pats issue seldom-used May 9 tender to LeGarrette Blount

The New England Patriots have issued a May 9 tender to free agent running back LeGarrette Blount, according to a league source.

ProFootballTalk.com first reported the news of the tender being issued.

The tender, which is a seldom-used mechanism, means that if Blount remains unsigned past July 22, he can only play for the Patriots during the 2017 season. If he signs before that date with another team, Blount would count toward the 2018 compensatory draft pick formula. The tender carries a value of 110 percent of a player's base salary from the year before, which would amount to $1.1M for Blount.

After the free-agent additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead, Blount appeared to be an odd man out in New England's backfield. The 30-year-old is coming off a career year, posting 1,161 yards and a league-high 18 rushing touchdowns.

There was an expectation that Blount's market, which has been quiet to this point, would pick up now that the date has passed that unrestricted free agent signings do not count toward the compensatory formula, but this tender could cool a potential market.

The door for a return for Blount, the team's power back during his time in New England, would seemingly still be open. That would put seven running backs in focus for the team, as the Patriots' backfield also boasts James White (signed to a three-year extension this offseason), Dion Lewis, veteran Brandon Bolden (a special teams contributor) and D.J. Foster, a promising developmental player.

The Patriots, who host the Chiefs to open the 2017 regular season, have made a flurry of offseason moves, including trading for wide receiver Brandon Cooks, defensive end Kony Ealy and tight end Dwayne Allen.

If its a rule its a rule. Maybe other teams should try it out

That's one thing the do better than every other team. Find the gray area in a rule to make it work for them. The "spirit" of the rule is only an enigma that they use to their advantage all the time.

They also find the dark across the line areas to cheat. Which they do better than any other team.

Which works for them also. As they know they just need to be sneakier than when they got caught the last time.

What a complete dick move. I can't wait to see this team get pounded in a few years.

How is it a dick move? Wasnt Blount available for teams to sign? I saw they had 7 RBs on the roster, but besides Lewis and Blount, the rest are scrubs / special teamers. I just dont see the fuss about this move

**** the cheating ********. Would you really expect anything less???? They push everything to the max and beyond. Who else in this league can get "kick backs" from your team and NOZT have it count as "cap" money???? WHY are they let to do the gray area cheating???
Again **** the cheating ********

I'm still in disbelief the Steel drop this douche in the middle of the year.. Pats get him.. roll to the SB w/him. Somewhere Cory Dillon is shining his ring.

Helps when you've pre recorded and matched the plays to hand signals and have a ERNEY ADAMS on your paid list. I'm NOT sure how good they are as to wich part is the honest and which part is the cheating ******* ********..........

Their day of reckoning is coming.

in a world built on greed. The NFL is more concerned with burying anything tarnishing their image VS exposing truth.

Not sure their day of reckoning will come where we get to witness it.

they ARE the dark across the line areas, ******* Siths

I don't understand why this rule even exists. It hampers Vet FAs from getting a job in the league. That goes against everything the NFLPA and NFL want, and that is to have their Vets employed. So now, another team is set back financially and with a comp pick, by signing a FA, that another team may or may not even use this season? So we're turning down and penalizing actual employment over a "break glass in case of emergency" scenario, that may never happen? This doesn't make any sense at all, and is a bad rule.

It will come from the outside.

I think it's funny... f Le Garette Blount and the Pats! Real classy move.

As much as I dislike the Patriots, I dislike Blount even more for being a dick.

.

So... am I correct in my assessment that this kind of screws with Blount? Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

My wife recently reminded me of the old adage... "There is no honor among thieves."

Actually, Blount could really screw over the Pats themselves by signing the 1.1 tender. NE has 5 backs already on the roster James White, Dion Lewis, DJ Foster and signed two from FA (Gillislee, Burkhead). According to Bill Polian, Blount signing would put pressure on NE as to "what to do with him". You have 4 solid RBs already, 2 signed during FA. If they keep him, they lose another player they expected to keep. If they cut him, then they lose the comp pic which would be a 3rd.

Watch the Pats withdraw the tender on July 22nd and then offer Blount a vet minimum deal. And players still want to go there despite the way they go about their business.

If he signs, the P*ts can still cut him at any time. Or they can trade him to another team for... you guessed it - a 3rd.

They're epic douches. People want to play for them because for vets it's their best chance of getting a ring, or post-season extra money. The problem is, the moment you sign with the cheaters you risk becoming a guy like Junior Seau. Someone who had a long and honorable career with a franchise. A guy who was literally the star for a team who then ran for the money and a shot at glory.

What did he get? A SB loss and his name attached forever with "The Cheaters".

Well Played Junior. Well played. It could almost make a guy want to kill himself.

Too soon?

Really dude?

Why would any team give up a pick when they know NE will release him or another player? Most the franchises despise how Belicheck does things. It's unspoken, but it's there.
