The guy gives us something we really lack out of the backfield and that’s speed. Even if look at the big run by Connor the guy is slow. I think he would help to change things up. We have done just enough to run the ball but outside of a couple long runs by Snell and Connor the running game is pretty sad.

The coaching staff is not afraid of having rookies play, obviously. If McFarland was ready, he'd have a hat (might be pretty bad at blitz pick up/pass pro). And the running game is sad? Two different runners cracked 100 yards in two consecutive weeks.

Speaking of guys that should get involved with the offense...I hope we didn't pay Derek Watt $3.25 million just to play special teams.

Yeah this couple snaps a game at fullback isn't utilizing him very properly. And Conner excels behind a traditional FB going north & south.

Why McFarland does not play:
- He isn't ready to pick up blitzes.
- The offensive line situation is causing us some game day rostering challenges.

speculation by Hoot?
of course. I like tossing spaghetti a'gin a wall as much as anyone.

they should get Claypool more attempts....
You see that coming slowly inching its way into the field. As he tweaks his routes you will see increased reps. The ceiling is high with this one.

With a raw Oline they really should use the FB more often. They have a lot of pieces and they are still trying to figure out how they all fit. Some of their reluctancy could be the strength of the WR corps. You have strength and quickness and height and speed. Very diverse group. If Watt in you have one less receiving option so they might be like who sits in that event. I think against your strong pass rush teams and or strong run blocking teams regardless there is a strong case to get Derek some more reps .

absolutely do now that Snell can't seem to hold onto the ball and is only a 2 down back. Give McFarland a couple series in our next game.

Activating him means he should have been in the game plan.

I honestly think he would have gotten touches if Snell didn't put that ball on the ground. That's what changed the rotation with the RBs. It became the JC show after that turnover.

Tomlin never has been a fan of using a FB very often, so don't bet on Watt getting alot of snaps on the offensive side of the ball.

Curious as to why so many people think McFarland isn’t good at blitz pick up? I’m not saying he’s going to be the savior our run game but saying I think he should get in the game more.

Recent history. In the cases of Conner, Samuels and Snell (to an extent) pass protection and knowing your blocking assignments were attributed to their lack of unforced playing time as rooks.

Edit: I thought I remembered a blurb about Mcfarland missing time due to injury. Don't know how long he spent, but he was placed in the concussion protocol on August 27. May or may not have anything to do with it. But, if he missed time ....

Good thread to throw the snap count in

Attrition will push him into the mix sooner rather than later -- especially with Conner's history.

Yes, he missed a week with that concussion. Training camp had broken at that point and they were prepping for the Giants.

So, he missed prep time for the Giants game and was inactive. Then had to try to "get on the moving train" this last week. Throw in Tomlin's desire to have a "bell cow" and Snell's big fumble aaaand, no snaps for McFarland.

They had 2 weeks to prep for the Giants.

If they insist on using these shotgun runs as the staple of the run game, then they better get McFarland in there soon because Conner and Snell suck at those kind of runs.
