I almost put this as a post in another thread, but it seems that it should be on its own.

When you look at what decisions are made this off season regarding personnel, it makes it difficult to put the second foot on the Tomlin train. I really want to like the guy, but I just don't get the love for small guys, the making of the D backfield a secondary (or worse) afterthought, keeping bad draft picks over guys who show promise, and picking up offensive players from other team's cuts then cutting rookies from the defense to make room for them. I'll root for him like crazy while he is here, but have to wonder if the Rooneys are scratching their heads also.

Thoughts?

I gotta say that I am a little surprised at the release of both Grant and Chickillo today.

Yeah I'm definitely scratching my head on this

If you can't trust Archer as your backup RB with Bell out, why is he even on the roster? If you sign Todman, why not cut Nix or Archer? Why Doran ******* Grant?!

A big issue with me is that they focused so heavily on the draft, especially on the defensive backs who could play the ball. Now all of those interceptions they added aren't on the team either because of the IR or they were cut. It's ridiculous that three defensive players that you spent months scouting and then drafted can't make the team when you have zero depth at any position other than inside linebacker. That is poor drafting and poor development.

I agree somewhat there's some - valid - confusion with the recent additions and cuts. Let's not forget this is not happening in a Tomlin-vacuum, but is done in unison with Colbert, other coaches and front office staff. The jist of this post is that Tomlin sits in his office and pulls these roster moves out of his ear, on a whim. I don't think it works like that.

Keep in mind we also have Boykin who we traded for, and Golson will be back next season. But the Grant release was a surprise, unless they consider Cockrell a substantial upgrade.

Grant is a head scratcher. I think Chikillo is just another guy. Nothng special. Camp darling. If they revert to the PS, no harm done, really. But if they lose Grant...

I've been a Tomlin guy, but I have to admit he is losing me a little bit. I didn't like the tone of the Buffalo preseason game. It seems they went out there so as to not get anyone hurt. I just think that is a bad precedent to be setting. And then risking Grant when most of the defensive backfield, such as it is, are FAs next year.

Would they have Boykin, who is only signed for one year, if Golson wasn't injured? It's not like they added him ahead of the draft, but instead waited until they realized they needed more depth. I'm fine with that move, but that still doesn't make the fact that two others who at least showed signs of developing into viable backups couldn't make the roster over a Landry Jones or a second fullback.

I understand the todman pick up but really, will he even dress after bell comes back? Cutting grant has me completely baffled.
