Paul Zeise:
The Steelers' season won't end with the Super Bowl
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers’ chances of winning the Super Bowl appear to be much better now that the Patriots looked like mortals Thursday night against the Chiefs. The Chiefs, led by Kareem Hunt, a relatively unknown rookie running back from Toledo, outscored the Patriots, 21-0, in the fourth quarter and won, 42-27.
It’s over for the Patriots. They miss Julian Edleman, Tom Brady has finally lost to Father Time, and Bill Belichick has lost his defensive fastball. OK, let's pump the breaks. Not only is that premature, it’s a little bit silly. This is the first game of a long, long season, and I'm pretty sure Belichick and Brady are going to have something to say about what team wins the AFC by the time it is all said and done.
This column was originally going to read that the Steelers will fall short of the Super Bowl, probably with Patriots knocking them out of the playoffs again. Now that the Patriots were smoked by the Chiefs, well, it is still going to read the same way. One game doesn’t change anything about how the season will play out.
The Steelers are going all-out to win it this year, and there is an underlying theme that this could be Roethlisberger’s final year. It is supposed to end like it did with Jerome Bettis in Detroit, Roethlisberger hoisting the Lombardi trophy while announcing he has played his final game. However, in spite of how fun it was to watch the Patriots get wrecked, I’m still picking them to win the AFC championship. They might not win the Super Bowl, but they will represent the AFC.
The Steelers are good enough to win the AFC, they just aren’t good enough to beat Tom Brady and the Patriots, especially when it matters most in the playoffs. That’s not me picking on the Steelers because nobody else in the AFC is good enough either.
Brady has faced the Steelers 12 times in his career and is 10-2 (3-0 in the playoffs). The last seven times he has faced the Steelers, he has thrown for 22 touchdowns and zero interceptions. In other words, he owns the Steelers, and there is no reason to believe that won’t continue this year even with the addition of cornerback Joe Haden.
This should be an excellent season for the Steelers, one in which they may set some records on offense and win almost every game they play. It won’t, however, be a Super Bowl season because in the end they still can’t and won’t beat the Patriots.
This is the **** that drives me nuts.
