So there's a story to be told ... about how you were allowed into the after party ... about how wild it was ... hell, there are a few stories to be told ... no?
I hit up a bar called the Blue Martini the Monday before the Super Bowl, it was loaded with Steelers players. At the time I was really hitting it in the gym hard and weighed about 265-270 lbs so I looked like one of the players. In fact there are 2 women out there who actually believe they got an autograph from a Steelers player -- I posed as a back-up TE.
There was the asking James Farrior to get a picture and some asshat stuck his drink in the picture. When I asked to retake it Trey Wingo from ESPN asked me rudely was I trying to date him. I excused myself with a really rude and mean look saying to him "You should kiss the *** of fans like me so that a no talent hack like you has a job, so shut it".
I made friends with Roy Lewis, who was a practice squad player on the team at the time, he got me into the party at the Intercontinental Hotel after the game and we stayed in touch for years after that, even when he got picked up by Seattle the next year.
I had a 25 minute conversation with Limas Sweed about his meltdown in the AFC Championship. I tried to build his confidence back up, even pointing out how he broke up an interception in the end zone on a badly thrown ball by Ben -- something Nate Washington did for the 2005 team vs. Denver. He actually left for a few minutes to powder his nose and came back because he really wanted to listen to what I had to say -- just a shame he didn't have that dedication to his job to match his talent....was a nice guy.
Willie Colon was one of the best guys I met. I used to rip him all the time watching but once I got to meet him, I saw him as a guy who really did the best he physically could. I had a different view of all players after that point because I saw the person behind the uniform more than before.
Ben Roethlisberger really WAS a cocky arrogant POS. You couldn't get a picture with him unless you were a hot chick.
Brett Kiesel happily yelled as I got my picture with him that he was in 1000 pictures that night and wanted to be in 1000 more.
Troy -- no pictures when battery died....was the ONLY player in a full suit.
I swear to this day Hines said he was gonna retire after one more season....but he had a lot of champagne in him at that point. He was cool as **** to meet! even if was for a few seconds.....
I stood next to Harrison and was bigger than he was at that time, but damn I was still terrified of him --- that man was the definition of intimidation!
